Title: Totaled Vehicles
Post by: Travis on February 18, 2013, 10:49:20 AM
There was a 2000 model Grand Prix up for auction which took a side impact. The rest of the car was in okay shape. Some idiot paid $500 for it. I guess he figured that since the car was obviously running when it got into the accident, chances are the engine and transmission are still good. He's going to have to piece everything out to make a profit on it.

I'd do $500 depending on how bad the damage was.
Know the right people and parts can bring $1000's.

Or if you know how to fix.

I got a Porsche for $1000 cause it had $7000 in damage and blue book was $5000.
But I do autobody and have paint booth at my disposal.
Actual cost to repair was a few hundred.   Most of the repair cost was labor (weld on parts) and NEW parts.

Was able to repair a lot they wanted to replace.  Got the $700 fender from a guy in Phoenix tht parts cars for $80.

More often than not, more money is made parting out a vehicle than selling it in working order.

No kidding.

Had a 1993 Saturn that I blew the engine.   320,000 miles.
Blue book was like $1200 in great condition, fully loaded....mine was basic and not running.

Stripped it and sold frame to scrapper for $100.
Qt panels: $100/ea
Door panels: $40/ea
Fenders: $50/ea
Bumpers:  $75/ea
Mirrors: $25/ea
Trunk lid: $150
Airbag: $200

All told with some interior stuff, battery, cad converter.... made about $1000

Even better.  Got car wholesale for $500, needed $100 timing belt. Total: $600.
Got hit.  Insurance gave me $1400, fixed myself for $100.

So drove it for five years and made $1700!
