What's it worth, but more importantly, what is it? What's it called?

I got this in the "safe locker" a few weeks ago and it finally came to the surface.

It measures 40" wide x 29" high x 21" deep.  The top is pretty much solid pieces of wood, but the sides are more of a fiber-board with wood on outside and a beige inside (see pics).

The wide trim on the liftable lid is nicely done (by hand?) and the lift handle seems brass or something.

It's lightweight because of the four main panels.   I was thinking it would have been from the 1930s and used for storage of things like pillows, blankets, sheets etc.  

Any thoughts?










Look at the chain links in the photo below; they look like they're hand hammered (pattern).

The wood carvings look celtic, sorry thats all I can offer on it. I think you may be right about it being for pillows and blankets and such. But then again, it looks a lil tall for that. :\

I'd take your photos to an antique dealer and they might have an idea of what it is.  I like your thought that it might be for blankets and pillows.  Could be some sort of hope chest too.

It's called a traditional English blanket chest; at the antique dealer link below you can see 5 or so pics of theirs and it's similar enough to mine to make a good comparison.

Their asking price?  $550.

Well, I'll give you 50% of the credit for the research (but not 50% of the income from the sale).

I took your Celtic idea and broadened it to "English" and then my blanket idea and came up with "English Blanket Chest".

The resulting link was about #5 on the google list I think and when I got to page one I did a search within their site and found the twin to my chest. A closer match you could not ask for.

Looked on eBay but found nothing similar. Haven't decided how to sell it or for what price, but anything like $250 to $300 would probably do it (unless I go for the gold like the antique dealer's do).

I like that piece.  Would match my woodwork in my old house perfect.   Thinking of buying something like that for all my kids toys laying around the house to store them in when he's not playing with them.

I'd put it on craigslist starting at $375 and put that link where the antique shop wants $500 and let someone low-ball you at $300.
