Determined Craigslist Buyer
« on: June 27, 2014, 09:18:50 AM »
Had a dresser / chest of drawers for sale on Craigslist for a couple weeks. Nothing special, pressboard actually but in nice shape and nice looking $65.00. Got a call from a buyer about an hour away who wanted to come see it. The buyer had to borrow a truck from a friend. Calls back, ok has a borrowed truck and will come. Arranged to come at 5:30. I get a call around 5:00 that they had a flat tire on the truck half way here. Will have to try again another day. They called back at about 6:15 asking if they can still come. Sure! Finally around 7:00 they arrive...in a huge tow truck with the smaller truck with the flat time loaded on it! Tire was shreaded by the way. Saw the dresser. Wife is hesitant, says "I didn't realize it was pressboard". Husband says "After all this we are not leaving without a dresser...we'll take it". Didn't even talk me down. Tow truck driver lowered the smaller truck, we loaded up the dresser, driver raised it back up and away they went!

So the $65 dresser probably cost him $200 after all was said and done. I love it when buyers tell me they're driving a long distance to come see an item. There is no negotiating at that point. If you just drove an hour to come see it, you must really want it.

Nice to confirm they weren't just jerking you around with made-up stories for their tardiness.

Either the wrecker driver was family or they were paying him a lot of money...because if it were me, I would have told them they were nuts.

I wonder how the conversation went. Husband and wife are sitting in the wrecker cab...husband turns to wrecker driver...oh, by the way, would you mind if we stopped by and looked at this dresser real quick?  :o  Oh, and if we buy it, would you mind lowering our truck down so we can put the dresser in the bed?

Maybe they had AAA and the tow wasn't costing them anything other than the driver's tip.

I was thinking maybe it was AAA also and they had the 100 mile round trip plan...and decided to make the most of it. Pretty sure continuing on to our house took them at least 20 miles out of their way. Maybe more. Plus I wonder about the tire. Will they reimburse the friend for a tire? Maybe it was a perfectly good tire and they just ran over something. They were big rims with 20's or 22's so maybe had low air pressure and pinch flatted which wouldn't really be their fault but...
