Title: Where do you meet?
Post by: mhuynh9 on September 17, 2013, 03:34:04 PM
I just read a post by Alias that said they met people in malls or police stations.  I understand safety concerns and usually have them meet at my storage with a friend or my wife.

Anyone ever had problems with creeps or anything like that?

I had a few shady experience's and one scary one.   I've had plenty of upset, mean, over-the-top rude or shouting people but one guy actually was (low level) physical.

He got out of his car yelling about how long it took him to get there.  Then that item wasnt as described (which it was).  Then he wanted to pay $20 for it instead of the $50 and I wouldnt go below $40.

He was in my face.  Then started pushing me saying "if you know what's good for you you'll come down to $20".   I reached towards my back to get pepper spray and he must have thought I was going for a gun or something cause all of a sudden he said "f**k it!  I don't have time for this!"  And hopped in his car and left.

That's when I started meeting in VERY public spaces.  Preferably where people are mingling or siting, not just walking by.

I haven't had any issues. But now I just have everybody meet at the store. We have businesses in the plaza open till 9 or 10 depending on the day of the week. I don't meet after those businesses close.

That's a pretty extreme situation. I've never even come close to someone like that.

It is amazing how crazy people get.  Logic just doesn't seem to enter the equation.  He knew how far it was when you gave him directions or address.

Yeah there's some crazies on cl but I've personally never really had an issue or concern with having people come to my house. As long as your not ripping them off you really have no reason to be concerned although my gf is a little paranoid and like hey the craigslist killer guy remember that, there's crazy people out there dont bring people here.

At the very most I sometimes will have someone meetme down the street from my house at a gas station or school. People are always running late and I hate sitting in a parking lot waiting for some guy who may or may not show up.

I'll have people either come to my house or a public place down the street and say call me when you get there. That way I can be at home working around the house, cleaning up, hanging out and I just wait for their call hop in the car and take a 30 second ride down the street.Beats sitting in Dennys parking lot for 3 hours waiting for a guy who's just 3 miles away every time you talk to him.

That must have been one valuable sale item to wait 3 hours!

I wait 15 minutes max (at my storage facility) and then head home. If they show up they sometimes tell the manager they're "looking for the guy with the gizmo for sale" at which time the manager calls me and I either return (from 1 mile away) or ask to speak to the 'buyer' and tell him to come to a location 6 blocks away from me.

Yes, I have a GOOD storage facility helper team !

Same here.  15 minutes and I'm gone.

I was raised with he military mentality of "if you show up right on time, your late"

I'm always early.   If you call 15min after scheduled time and say your 15 away that means I'm sitting there for 45 minutes.   Negotiations are out.  Your paying asking price.

Most everybody I've ever dealt with off CL has been pretty decent. Most are on time or within a few minutes of being so.

Issues have been more with people responding to an ad with interest, and then not responding after I respond to them.. Strange, they want it, I respond that I still have it, and they don't respond again.

Yep, people change their minds and sometimes they want it RIGHT NOW  and if you can't meet them because of other obligations...sale goes south.

****

I got a call on Monday from a guy who said he would be in my town on Wednesday about 11 a.m. I told him to call me from about 30 miles out and we would firm up the meeting.

I went to run errands and when I got home he had called at 9 a.m. saying he was at my storage facility waiting for me.

Since I use my home phone for these transactions and I trust people to do what they say they are going to do, it has backfired on me a few times, but I don't use my cell phone that much and I don't want to be tied into having it on all the time and fooling with it. There is always another buyer somewhere down the line.

*****

Another time a guy called frantic to get an item. But when I called him 10 minutes later the call went to a voice mail and I never heard back from him...TEN MINUTES LATER.  Then I called him again about one hour later...he answered and said he had already gotten one though it had cost him $50 more than I was asking for mine.

cList buyers include a bunch of crazies, but the good one outnumber the bad.

The opposite side of the coin really sets me off. Someone places an ad and you send them a message only to NEVER get a response. I'm like WTF, why place an ad if you're not going to respond when someone replies to it?

It's possible they had already sold the item before you called or emailed them and they just hadn't taken the ad off yet.

Even our fearless leader left his 5 (count 'em FIVE) listings for his motorhome on cList after he announced he had sold it here on the forum. OF COURSE...maybe he hadn't collected the money yet and was waiting to take them off (all 5 of them) until he had been paid.

*****

I get calls for items I have taken off within 15 minutes of a sale being made. And I mean these calls are coming two days later. Guess the person printed it out or maybe never refreshed it.  Like I said...cList makes for strange doings sometimes; not everyone is as efficient at buying as we are at selling.

There are many names for what I do; one of them is "keeper of Travis' integrity".

I just take knowing what the competition is doing to a new level.

I replied to him an hour after the ad was posted. That was 3 days ago, the ad is still up, and I still haven't heard from him.

Also, it doesn't take much to reply to an email and say, "sorry it's gone already.'

I never take people inside the house, but will let them into the garage.

When I meet people away from the shop, it's always in a parking lot during business hours.. I don't like strange people knowing where I live. I'm sure nothing will ever happen, but still.. You just never know.

I'm exaggerating a bit but really you get these people who like string you along. YOu dont leave cuz they say theyre only 5 minutes away tehn you call them again still only 5 minutes away.

I recenntly sold a car on cl. Guy calls me says hes comming out, I got stuff to do errands to run but says he'll be over in an hour lives by ohare, cool come on over. Hour goes by, I figure I wont pester the guy I'll give him another 15 or 20. Call him, oh so sorry he's running late, had to borrow a car blah blah blah. Another hour goes by call him hey I'm not waiting around all day you comming? Yeah I'm only 13 miles away. Some more time passes call him up, I'm not waiting any longer I'm leaving got stuff to do, oh no dont leave I'm 5 minutes away. 20 minutes later he hsows up, low balls me, we finally come to an agreedupon price very good deal for him Im jus so sick of dealing with flakes and assclownns like this guy I wanna get the sale done. he says let me run to the bank, runs to the bank never comes back never calls.

Yup, "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
