Wow! Just Wow!

Wow! Just Wow!
« on: August 04, 2012, 02:23:36 PM »
After a month and a half hiatus from our local flea we went out to sell today.  We netted over $900.  So many folks saying 'we've missed you!'

We were blowing stuff out like crazy.  Sold probably $100 worth of cd's & dvd's at a buck a piece.  I know most sell theirs for more, but we haven't had a lot of luck when we charge more and I'll tell ya what~it was great making those sales.

Used cowboy boots and tennies flew out.  Camo & knives.  Tools galore!

I'm beat and sunburned and worn out..........but can hardly wait to hit it again next Saturday!

Best part is we only took out about 1/3 of our swap meet inventory~
Tomorrow we head to the antique fair (as buyers).  While there I'm gonna shop our Native American items.  Hopefully find somebody with some knowledge that has some time to go over our lot.

Hope others are experiencing great sales in their neck o' the woods!

Now could somebody please plug in the oxygen for craigslist???

 ;D

Sounds like great sales for a flea market! How many tables did you have set up or what size space do you have?

We get two spaces and pull the truck & trailer in to the northern most end.  2 6', 2 4' and 3 card tables.  After those are filled we have tubs with stuff & tools go on a huge tarp right on the ground.  We're very redneck looking, but that doesn't bother our customers~ ;D
It's funny~a year ago I had to have everything just so........now just get it out there!  who has time to organize?

There is a couple who we see at auctions that have moved to 'our' swap meet and they love it.  They had always done the bigger (more commercial) one and couldn't believe the space vs cost vs clientele at our 'junkers' flea.

It costs $15 for a corner & $13 for an interior space.  We always get two spaces.  My sis set up on the opposite corner from us this past Sat.  I think next Saturday I'll grab that space too and just lay out tarps with clothes, luggage and toys.

Of course weather predictions are for 104 degrees, which could squelch the crowd~
we'll see~

oh tried my best to land 4 6' tables, but the guy wouldn't budge on the price.  Have to keep looking as we certainly could use the table space~

That is great Rockin.  You just have to love the first of the month.  I didn't hit the flea saturday as they called for rain.  Instead had reserved two spots for Sunday.  Most of the regulars kept saying Sunday was doing better then Sat.  Well they were 1/2 right.  Saturday was flat for most of the regulars.  Sunday was better but then it started to rain around noon.  I cleared $310 after expenses and my daughter $44.  Best day yet at the flea for me as I avg 180-200.  Sold a bunch of DVDs, purses, mix of items.  If that keeps up I'll sell on Sunday and hit yard sales on Saturday.

For us temps are high 90s or above with 100+ heat index and mix of rain.

That is the TRUE wow factor !

I haven't had a day like that in about 3 years. Maybe that's a function of not buying as many lkrs, not as many quality lkrs available, etc, etc.

Saturday I had only done $4 at nine o'clock. Uusally it's $75 or so by 8 or 9.  Wasn't looking too good at that point but finished at $275 which was OK.

Just a few years ago I was satisfied with regular $400 days, then it slipped to $300, and that is still my goal but sometimes it will come in at just under that or even the occassional $175. Fortunately I have never had a $75 day as has been reported here in the past by several sellers.

Try online government surplus auctions for 6' and 8' tables. I've won nice banquet style tables with fold down legs in bulk lots for an average of about $20.00 apiece. These tables go for $75.00 - $125.00 new, so I am very happy with them. They are used but all have been in good condition. Nashville Tn has an online auction site and list bulk lots of tables frequently.

Thanks Millertime~I'll check it out!
MovieMan~I was stunned!  I figured we'd do about $600, but when we were at $400 by 8am....knew it was gonna ROCK!  I got greedy and was hoping for the magic $1000........
of course the 7 lockers in just over a couple weeks made for a wide variety of inventory.
I've never had the $75 day but we did have a $125 day that felt like crap.......

Craigslist~we almost tried Sunday too, but decided one day of THAT was enough.

I've had numerous folks say "well we did $1k at the swap yesterday" and I always thought 'yeah right'.  Guess it can and does happen~

We did go to the antique fair yesterday and had some of our items 'evaluated'.  The main guy I talked to looked at the baskets and started salivating.  He kept asking what we wanted for the two Navajo baskets & the one OLD Pima one.  I told him to shoot me an offer and I'd consider it.  He said $250 for the 3 baskets.  Told him I'll think about it.

Came back 20 minutes later (in which time he went to my sis and told her not to let us leave without talking to him) and he offered $350 for the lot plus the woman basket.  Don and I discussed it and told him $400 for the 4 pieces.  He jumped on it.  Probably left some money on the table, but I did learn about my baskets, blankets and jewelry, so know what i have and what to charge NEXT month when I set up at the fair.

all in all a great weekend~

oh yeah~back to MovieMan~we have a newbie with deep pockets that drives a big Ford duel cab and his license plate reads (and I kid you not) 'wowfctr'    ::)

Ive never taken my trailer with me to the flea, guess I have always been worried I won't find enough space, so I just load what I can get into my truck. Ergo that is why my best day at the flea market is around $280. I guess I should just start loading the trailer and take a shot at getting enough space to park, and then maybe I can get into that $400-$100 ballpark. Been doing yard sales more lately and that has worked out too.

It's hard to know how "deep" someones pockets are at the auction. Whats more important is how deep is his commitment! You know how tough this business is, it doesn't matter if he's got a million dollars in his pocket, if he can't handle the work, he'll quit in no time; unless he is truly just a treasure hunter and throws everything in the dump that's not valuable. Even then, he would probably get bored with finding so little truly valuable things.

Sounds like he's asking to get run up with that license plate, so go ahead and oblige him.  ;)

With a plate like that the newbie would be dead meat in my area. I alone would take him skyward in bidding and I KNOW a few others would join in.

The guy is (imo) a total d-bag (sorry for the bluntness).
He was one who was interviewed (in the segment I mentioned a couple months ago) and said he's made thousands.  real bright there buddy.  And he wonders why we have crowds??

He is also one who has been granted special privileges by one of our local auctioneers.  When at an auction there was a soft-sided gun case and he reached in and squeezed it while the auctioneer was standing next to him.  Don (being Don) popped off and asked if we all get a free squeeze?  The guy got the unit, but Don ran him up on it.  Left a sour taste and we really haven't dealt with that auctioneer since.

We did mention that story to a couple fellow auction buyers.  We're waiting to see him again so we can play a round of 'run his butt up!!'

Almost sounds like he got a 1 in 100 or 1 in 500 score in one of the first few lockers he purchased, so now he's a hot dog and all in, buying a fancy truck and license plate. Give him 6 months to a year and see if he is still around and buying at the same levels. I bet time will tell that he will find out the "wow factor" is as rare as Bigfoot and he should have quit when he was ahead.

Ive only found bigfoot in one locker out of 200 , I had to get rid of him because he ate to much and stunk up the bathroom something fierce
