Title: yard sale-flea market ordinace
Post by: UGA*FAN on December 14, 2011, 07:38:32 PM
The little city next to mine passed a new ordinance stating that a person or address can only have a flea market  or yard sale once every 30 days?

Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

Sounds ridiculous to me, why would there bea ordinance for this?

Thank your lucky stars !  In my area (and others around the state and country) the ordinance reads 2 yard sales a YEAR !

I think this is tried for several reasons:

1) to protect neighborhoods from "blight" and traffic.

2) to protect merchants (who pay for brick and mortar places of business).

It may not be enforced, but it is enforceable, and it is usually neighbors who will turn you in if you do it 52 weekends a year !

I do not do yard sales, and have just now started my interest in flea markets so this was new to me.

After your explanation I can see the reasoning, I just has never heard of this and thought it was just probably this town.

Here in my town some people have a yard sale setup eveyday LOL.  Guess we either don't have this ordinance or it is not enforced.

Thanks for the input.

Many cities and towns limit the # of yard sales you can do a month or year.  I was going to setup at my sister-in-laws house when found out it's 1 a month and a $5 or $8 "license fee" you must get.  Is why I just started to hit the flea for $12 instead.  More traffic and no liability if some dummy trips and falls on their face.
