Garage Sale Event at Storage Facility
« on: May 14, 2014, 08:18:15 AM »
I just got this email from a storage facility in my area. They're allowing tenants to sell stuff from their units and there is a lot of other cool stuff going on. I'm probably going to go do some pickin', and hand out some business cards. It sounds well organized and like a lot of fun.

"We have provided a one stop location for our tenants to sell their
belongings yard sale style.

Full tenant participation, 25+ tenants participating and a handful of
non-profits raising funds for their programs.

Vendors, food, live DJ and much more.

Activities for the kids; bounce house, games and a scavenger hunt starting
at 11am

Something for EVERYONE.  This is a place to Shop, Eat and Play."

Do any of the storage facilities in your area allow tenants to have garage sales on their property? Might be a good avenue for you to sell your wares.

Sounds illegal to me.

Being commercial property instead of residential the business transacted is controlled by the property insurance and the business license. I doubt garage sales are covered by either. Then there also has to be sale tax resellers certificates on file for anyone selling. If individuals did this on their own they likely would get away with it. However, since it is being organized by the storage facility then a lot of the legal factors come into play.

I agree, there is some additional liability. I don't think you have to charge sales tax when you're reselling your personal belongings.

Not from your home, but you do when it's done on commercial property.
