Does anyone know when storage auctions began?

A question for our vintage members. Does anyone know when storage auctions began?

"A long long time ago in a galaxy far away."

I think it was about two weeks after the first Walmart opened.....

I can't answer that question to be exact. I do know that thirty to thirty five years ago I went to a local storage auction with my grandparents. I remember it being an auction and not just a garage sale which we went to a lot.
