Has anyone found pre 1900 photographs?
« on: December 26, 2013, 08:05:03 AM »
Over the years I have found a few old black albums with photos from the 1930's or so and sometimes those would
have pre-1900 photos as well that had been passed down through the family.

Anyone else?  And if so, what luck did you have selling them?

I have quite a bit of them but have not sold many.  The only time I listed I did a lot on ebay and started it off at 9.99... sold for 9.99

I've sold quite a few in lots and done pretty well. Best one was a civil war soldier in uniform in a gold foil frame. Sold for a little over $100. Other than that mostly lots of photos ranging from late 1800's to early 1900's sold in large (several hundred) groups ranging from $75 - $150 ish.

None pre 1900. I have 6 panoramics from early 1900s all group photos. Not the best subject matter. Still have all 5. All priced between $10-$20 except for 1 which is priced at $50. Girls on bikes, very creepy photo. That is the only photo not dated. Most bikes have wooden tires, so I'm thinking very early 1900s.. perhaps late 1800s. Still they sit. They do bring a lot of attention though.

I fortunately had a lady stumble across me that was looking for old photos. I now collect them in a small box and when it gets full I call her. She gives me 50 to 100 dollars and then she sells them. She travels around the country in her motor  home selling at different shows. I like that I don't have to deal with them but make some money. I have dealt with her three times and I have never felt like she has taken me on prices.

I found a few albums of Daguerrotypes & Ambrotypes. If I remember correctly, most common photos were selling for $3-4 each on eBay. I think I sold each album for around $100. The subject matter usually dictates the value. For example, if the person in the photo is doing something unusual like smoking a cigar or holding a pistol, it could be worth more. Images of soldiers sell well. The big money makers are images of famous people, politicians, generals, etc. Also, pictures of people who weren't usually photographed, like slaves, can bring good money.

I found an old album with leather cover from the 30's with pics from a civilian conservation corps camp. sold fo $100 on eBay. Picked up a box of old photo albums and loose photos from 1850s -1930s at a swap meet for $50. sold them all in different lots on eBay for around $250. They were a navy family with alot of southern cali pics, hawaii pics and panama canal pics. Pretty interesting stuff.
