What is the hardest item to sell ?
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:02:42 PM »
New men's tennis shoes (Nike, Converse, etc) at a decent price. Not giving them away when they sell for $60 or more. I have a hard time selling them at $15 (at flea). They go better on eBay, or sometimes not at all on eBay.

Furniture, It has to be really cheap or really nice to sell around here. I end up giving it away on Craigslist most of the time if it does not go to the dump.  Clothes I rarely try to sell as everyone wants them dirt cheap even ofr new with tags.

I would say books are hardto sell. It seems no one wants books unless they are for free.
Also i find pictures to be slow, unless they are oil paintings of a well known artist. But prints and other pictures are not moving at all.

So what i do with books and pictures is that i save them up, and twice a year i hold a yardsale for the products that are hard to sell.
Then they can be sold for 2 to 5 dollars a pice.

I have a hard time with clothes. Furniture isn't too bad for me. If it's cheap or dumpy furniture I'll sell say a kitchen table for like 5 bucks. Not really making much but dont gotta pay to throw it away and any money is good money.

For nicer furniture I just found a resale shop in my area and the lady was saying she cant keep enugh furniture in the store, flying out the door. It is an upscale resale shop though so has to be nice stuff.

I really struggle with clothes. Even good brands like Dolce Gabbana I have to practically give away on ebay. Just sold a D&G blazer that was probably 300-400 new and I think I sold it for $4 plus shipping.

And all of this is in almost every locker, might wonder if it possible to make money on anything at all.
I think there is more to it then that.

I'll check some books online first (military, guns, specialty topics) and if they aren't going there I'll take
them to the flea. I hold to a good price (say $8 to $10) on a book about Flying Fortresses, and the like and usually
get it....might have to take it out 2 or 3 times though.

A girl asked about a "Fitness for Dummies" book and when I said $3 she couldn't put it down fast enough. I forget the
book store price but it has to be $14 or so.

Sometimes when they react that way I'll say, "Well, let's see what it sells for at the bookstore." Turn it over and let them hear $24.95 (or whatever). Sorry, I'm only human the customer ISN'T always right.

I've also found that bundling several books helps out. If they don't want to pay the $3 for fittness book, I put another one or two with it (if I have them) and say "How about $5 for all three?". If they don't want that deal they need to go
to the library...I hope they don't  have to pay overdue fees !

Ironically, I always had bad luck with the high end appliances and furniture. It always seemed to bring out the tire kickers. On the other hand, I couldn't keep the average and low end furniture around. Tip for the newcomers: low end appliances sell like hotcakes.

Personally I've had luck with selling books, I made over $400 on Dungeons and Dragons books in one week.  I'd say the hardest thing to sell, for me, is microwaves.

dirty old thongs, can never seem to get rid of those.

I have a hard time with shoes as well. I had a brand new pair of puma speedcat suede womens shoes still had stickers on the bottom. Tried several price points on ebay and craigslist, finally wound up selling for like $9 plus shipping reasonable shipping so didnt make anything off it.

So far for me it's electronics; computers, monitors, printers, stereos, 8-track players, cash registers. Haven't figured out the best way to sell this stuff. Of course I am talking about obsolete electronics, that are scraped up, missing plugs, wires, and accessories, probably don't work at 100%.  ???

Computers I scrap out myself, I use to build them, I still do every now and then when I feel like it. Monitors I junk if they are the old CRTs, printers (obsolete ones) I sell as a big lot of them. Have not came across the rest of those mentioned, so I wouldnt even know how to get rid of them.

I had 4 average microwaves at my first sale this year and sold them very quickly.  I just had another sale and only sold 1 of the 3 I had. Hit or miss I guess.

My enemy is picture frames. They do sell, but I accumulate them faster than I sell them.  I'd like to see a poll of storage auction buyer's inventory of those...
