Title: Got "stung" picking today
Post by: MovieMan on March 14, 2013, 10:51:28 PM
Bought a stainless steel clad outdoor lighting power center today at a flea for $15. Looked it up on the iPad before I bought it....$500 plus.  Looked like a deal to me.

Got it home, plugged it in...nada...no output !

A gamble and a loss.

If it's all stainless, there's probably 15 bucks worth of scrap in that thing if you can't get it working!

It measures about 17" x 12" x 6" and is mostly riveted together. Guess I could bust it up if the price for stainless is that good.

To bad they don't pay by the weight of the transformer inside.  ;D

Stung again !

Finally plugged in a 30 bottle wine cooler by Haier I got at a piece by piece auction...it came out of a locker.

No go. Compressor doesn't kick on. Relay clicking, but no go.   Any ideas on how to re-purpose a 4 foot high cooler with a curved amber plastic front?

$30 down the drain !

Don't cha hate that?!

I went to list a laser disk player today.   It had powered up and gave display.....but went to play disk and motor is out.

Got pair of bushnell binoculars a value village for $7.99.   I looked them up and looked like the $200 ones.
Researched better at home and they are the small ones you get free with big ones for $29.99.

Oh well. Can't win'em all.

Not sure but could try to sell as is to a farmer.. They could lay it on its back and make a chicken brooder out of it. Remember on her somewhere where old non working freezers used as feed storage. Just a thought. Might break even.

I've been stung like that a few times last year at yard sales.  Yes - that weed eater works I just don't have any gas.  $15 later and gas in tank...pull...pull...pull - spark plug...pull...pull...pull  -  well crap.

Is nice when you have the reverse of that.  Lady sold me a mower that wouldn't work for $10.  Clean filter, put in a new spark plug, gas - wham $150 sale later - we have lunch money.

I've learned to try and test everything on the spot.  Don't care how many bibles you swear on.  Is why we test before bring things in the store, and before it leaves.  Have had a few items (like vcr, dvd player, etc) that worked when tested it.  To crap out on us and look bad when we are about to sale it.

Yesterday I saw two nice, old, possibly antique, chairs at an estate.
Tried to research but no luck.    They only wanted $25/ea.   Almost took gamble but decided I have enough chairs I've yet to sell.  (With furniture, I pretty much only buy things I will use/upgrade what i have. That way if they don't sell I'm not really out.)

I called my friend who just got a house.  Figured they would look nice in his entry way.
He liked them but today, being still in his truck, he swung by antique dealer just to see if he made a good buy.

Dealer offered him $300!

Passing on a deal is almost as bad as being stung.....

@ Allias300 sorry to here your sting,,, You know chairs should have grabbed them anyway for $25... But I am a sucker for chairs too.

Better luck next time.
