Title: Latest "piece-by-piece" Auction
Post by: MovieMan on September 16, 2013, 09:47:22 AM
Once or twice a month I go to facilities in several cities which conduct single item or piece-by-piece sales.

This doesn't seem to be all that common across the country (at least no one else writes about it on this forum), and only one other member on the forum has mentioned this practice and that was negatively.

I used to feel that way about it too. It can take a lot of hours and sometimes the rewards are slim, but other times they are great....just like buying regular units only with more control on the part of the buyer.

In this case I got to the first facility about 15 minutes late thinking not a big deal as they were supposed to have 8 lockers. Instead, people were walking out as I was parking. They only had two lockers and both got sold in a total of 15 minutes. What does that tell you about their contents?

Even a lkr with next to nothing in it takes 10 to15 minutes to sell unless it's just plain empty.

Second facilty supposed to have 8 or so lkrs also .... and it did.  This time the sale took about 5 hours.  Worse than that was that I only bought one box of items for $5 and it wasn't that great when I got through it.

One fellow buyer though did well getting a whole locker for $100. It is going to come out good. I didn't bid on it because the location was remote from my home base and I just didn't want to deal with it and it would have just been driving the price up for him. He has returned that favor for me in the past.

From what I understand they used to do piece auctions out my way before the shows. Now, it's all entire contents sales.

Piece by piece auctions are still popular here, one of my best finds was a 48 star cotton flag for $3. I also do good on clothes, DVD's, CD's and video games. Big profit on small dollar items but its still profit right?
