eBay / Re: FREE Auction-Style Listing - MAY 16th

OK Money, Rockin, Craig, Matches, et. al........what are you waiting for???  Get your 50-thousand listings ready to go!! :o :o

I only got 6 listings up for the freebie day.

Compared to the 50,000 offered, I feel like a slacker!!!  :P

It's $5,000 and 100 transaction in the 12 month trailing period, plus certain minimum DSRs. In June or July, they're lowering it to 100 transactions and $1,000.

Alloro is right about making the discount harder to get, with those new return and shipping requirements.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Coin Question
« on: May 05, 2012, 09:48:35 PM »
I may be wrong as it's been a while since I checked, but I think the war nickels were only 30% silver, unlike the 90% dimes and quarters.

As for value, I'm certain a quick ebay check will yield those answers fairly easily.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking Yard Sales Weekend May 4

Has anyone else noticed the prices at yard sales are through the roof?

The ones that kill me are where they list what they originally spent on the item. Like it is even revelant any more.

It seems as though any that list the prices are overpriced. It helps to narrow down the list and avoid a wasted trip.

Haven't seen any advertised that were especially enticing for this weekend. Probably just cruise around locally and see what's going on.

We've done well at church sales lately, as they tend to have a lot of stuff in one spot and the pricing tends to be awesome, probably cause they aren't selling, and over-valuing, their own items.

It is one advantage to being in a town with a good number of churches.  :)

Already looking forward to next weekend!!

I just wonder who would be honest.

Fridge
Old couch
Kids toys
Two boxes of porn
Shoebox of prison letters from my ex

And I may have left a crack pipe in there...

Stores / Re: Anyone Actually Own a Store?
« on: May 02, 2012, 11:42:00 AM »
Sales were slow for me at the vendor mall in April, and the flea market has been a mad house. Not necessarily a lot more shoppers at the flea, but definitely everybody and their momma trying to sell their stuff at the flea. Lots of competition. I attribute the slow sales to nice weather and competition from all the yard sales.

And April was the worst month I've had on ebay since I started. Probably some seasonality to it, but interesting to note that it was not just me, nor was it just ebay.

I picked up some good stuff in the last couple weeks and expect May to be a bit better just on the strength of my new merchandise. Ironically, it is thanks to garage sale season that I got the stuff!!

Thanks for the update!! This is a thread I've had a keen interest in following.

I'm fairly certain you will do better in your second month, as I recall, you weren't exactly as prepared at "opening" as you had hoped. I can only believe you will be in a better position going forward.

Keep up the good work and keep the updates coming!!

Dan Dotson...is that you..Dan, please stop promoting your Auctions here..really dont you make enough money already....LOL.. ;D

Thread-jacking troll... ugh!!

Please keep this crap in the original thread so I don't have to wade through it in every thread on the board.

You do realize that Dotson is connected to Storage Treasures, right?? And that this is a different forum?? Yes?? Do you realize that this forum is run by a normal dude like you or me and not some messianic storage guru?? And I hope he's making a little money from it, just like I root for all our boardies to make money.

The fact is, you're original piece of advice was not wrong, but incomplete and you didn't want to hear it. If what you're doing is working for you, then awesome, keep going with it, but that doesn't mean it's the only way to make money in resale. And you should expect debate on a message board... that's kinda the point.

Anyhow, that's all I'm gonna say on the subject.

So a few days ago I posted about the high prices at the Goodwill distribution center. Specifically the chairs at almost retail. The one I remember the best was an Ikea chair priced at $35.

Today I was at a local goodwill and saw the same chair (it might even be the SAME chair) for $7.99!
And it was pink tag which is 50% off on Thursdays so $3.99!   WTF?

Dartboard!!

Honestly, I don't think this person is a long-time storage buyer if he says he's only hoping to break even on his units. Why keep doing it?

He may have been a manager at a couple facilities, but I question his buying experience, which leads me to question the entire thing.

And how did I take this post from value village finds to a rant on CL listings?
Sorry about that.

Seemed natural to me.  :)

If Spend $1  it is $460 million to one for my money my odds of winning are still 230 to 1.

Correct, but you have a positive expectation of 2:1.

Sometimes I think they price by dartboard.there doesn't seem a ryhme or reason.I'll hit Goodwill tomorrow for Monday Madness.

It is fairly random and varies pretty wide by location, as well.

I bought a couple items recently. A new sealed tin of pokemon cards for $3 and a set of Roger Waters The Wall concert exclusive pins for $1.

I bought them both, but it just surprises me what the person pricing sees as more valuable.

The pins already sold on ebay for $16.

It does not matter if it is 1 million  460 million your odds are still 230 million to 1.

I understand that the odds of matching all the numbers does not change, but the favorability of those odds is varied depending on the prize amount.

If the prize is $460 million to a 230 million to 1 shot, then the odds are 2:1 in your favor.

Best example I can give is a coin flip. If someone said "I'll give you $10 if it's heads and you give me $5 if it's tails," you have to take that bet. What you really want to do is get as many flips as possible with those terms. On 1 million flips, you will walk away with $2.5 million dollars, give or take the standard deviation.

It's the same reasonable expectation whether it's 460 million:230 million or 2:1.
