Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: A gross find today
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:40:48 PM »
Dang you overpaid by $15.  Seriously, least if you find a few decent items you can make your money back.  That is yuck but not the worse thing you can find in a locker.

My first auction was a saturday circus auction.  Bid on 3 units but was easily outbid.  I prob saw a good 50+ units before I really bit the bullet.  I went to every auction that I could to learn and study.  Did research on all the stuff I saw to get a general price idea, etc.  On a 7 facility caravan I finally bit the bullet only due to my wife being with me and purchasing the locker for a specific item for one of my kids.  I've passed on a few I liked just due to time constraints and such.

Just remember the buying is easy and fun.  Then comes the hard work.

Well did a quick 3 unit auction today.  First unit was pretty nice and full.  Was a 10x20 and sold for $300.  I was interested in it but not with only 24 hours to clean it out.  The other 10x20 was 3 couches, a bed, 4 kid/dog gates, and various eldery odds and ends.  It went for $150.  The last unit was a small 5x10 with crap tv, microwave, few junk end tables or something.  It sold for $5.  No one wanted the unit.  Was only about 10 registered bidders today.

Only problem with auctionzip.com is if the facility doesn't use an auctioneer they are not going to be listed on the site.  I know of only 2 facilities in my area that use an auction company.  Most do the auctions themselves.

If you don't want to look in newpapers and such.  Then get the phone book out and call some places.  You can quickly learn what days and how often places do auctions.  They will also call you many a times about new auctions if you register with them.

It all depends on the state you are in and the company.  Most of the places in my area post the first initial and last name of the person who has defaulted and a snippet description.  Others, the full name and snippet, and yet others just the name.  Legally they should be posting the name and a brief description of the contents.  They may take a picture to send to the owner but I've not found any websites w/ pictures for the facilities in my area.

example listings of upcoming auctions:
#229, Hillary Caldwell: table, radio, computer
Dorn Margaret Elizabeth unit # 348 all content
111: Cornwell, A.-Storage Containers, boxes and chest.
222 Harmon Jackson

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: do you throw out 5$ incremental bids?
« on: September 29, 2011, 06:23:31 AM »
I don't unless we open with that.  However, one of the regulars that I call Mr. Five does.  He will constantly toss out $5 incremental bids depending if he wants to screw with you or not.  If it's a unit he wants he'll jump the bid in 20s or more.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Online out of state car auctions
« on: September 28, 2011, 09:46:48 AM »
Depending on state laws you would have to first get the title put in your name if you purchased it.  Then you could sale the "title" and transfer it to the person that purchased the car.  All, without actually moving the vehicle.  However, I think you would also have to pay the various taxes and such.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Exercise Machines and there metal
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:43:28 AM »
I look at exercise equipment as scrap metal.  I alrady have a treadmill and one of those step cycle things that I can't get rid of.  The wife wanted them both and then never uses them........

The Lounge / Beckett Online Price Guide
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:30:42 PM »
Does anyone use the beckett online price guide subscription service?  I have a ton of old baseball and racing cards in my own collection.  Then have found a number of comic, baseball, basketball, and various other cards in a unit.  I have no clue what is good and what is not.  So thought about getting a listing together and checking online.

Big question is can you export your "organize" list from beckett with prices?  Do you think it's worth the $31 a month for total access?  Can you do any uploads?

Other Forms of Selling / Re: anyone use half.com for books?
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:26:53 PM »
I used it years and years ago when I was still in college (so 15 or so years back).  Would both sale and buy text books from the site.  Was thinking about jumping on it again as I have a few hardback and a ton of paperback books out of a unit.  Paperbacks may not be worth it but the hardbacks may.

Ya, I saw this auction advertised in my local paper.  If it wasn't for a soccer game, and a festival my kids will be singing at on Saturday I'd be at that auction, or another auction that has alot of equipment and such on the 1st.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: The Insides (TV)
« on: September 26, 2011, 06:07:56 PM »
I normally don't bid on units w/ TVs unless it's really a unit I like.  However, I've found a few small TVs up under stuff when I couldn't see the TV.  I don't calculate my "time" in cost since I do this as a hobby.  If I'm not digging in a unit I'd prob be playing video games.  So at least I can make some cash back for time spent.

man I wish there was someone around here that would pay me to dump TVs/Monitors.  Heck, even if they took them for free I'd be happy.  You live in a prime spot movieman.

R u serious so u take losses when u find tvs??

As Dave would say "Yuuuuuup".  I don't take as big of a loss as some people do but I HATE tvs.  Before they opened the "recycle center" the county would do a electronics recycle drive twice a year.  You could take them TVs, monitors, etc. for free and they would load it all on a big semi.  Since they opened the center that went away.  Local trash dump also closed so everything goes to a collection center now if you don't use a trash service.  So I strip every last item I can from a TV that I can either use or make a few cents or such from.  Even down to the screws.

PS - I hate that copper prices have started to fall.  Just as I'm getting a good supply again.
