General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Exercise Machines and there metal
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:47:34 AM »
Scrap price is really going to depend on the metal and your location.  If you have a scrap yard nearby call and ask them what they pay for alum, copper, etc.  I have no idea what most weight type benches and stuff are made of.  I would suspect steel or something but sorry not much help.  If you have the name / model of the machine I'll try and figure it out.

Well most of those halves are just worth the $.50 from the picture.  The 69 is worth some money since it's 40% silver.  The silver cert is worth a couple of bucks.  The $5 one if in same type condition about $10 or so.  The morgan dollar I can't tell the date so figure $25-30 if in VG-8 at least.  More if in better condtion.  Really have to have them slabbed to get any real money out of them.  The american eagle bullion coin is worth spot price or more depending on the year.  If your not into coins and planning on selling them on ebay LMK.  May be interested in them depending what else you have.  You may want to take them to a coin dealer to see what they will offer you.  Just know depending on the dealer they may low ball you a good 30-50%.

Think you could of gotten more for the .380 but that is still a great find.

As for the furniture item - I have no idea.  If it's solid wood I'd say 150-200 easy w/o doing any research on it.  It also may be more Japan vs China.

Good luck and happy digging.

eBay / Re: anyone have an ebay store?

Ok just did some rough math as I was curious about prices.  Insertion fee's are the same for auction style listings.  Assuming that you have a basic store and list/sale 125 items in the $10-24.99 range, and that the final value is $24.  The breakdown would be like this:

Person:                                                                           Store:
Listing 1 - 50 free, 51-125 cost $37.50                              Listing 1 - 125 cost $62.50
FV Fees @ 9%, 2.16 per sale = $270                                 FV Fees @ 7.5% = $225
Cost of Store: $15.95 @ basic

Total = $307.50                                                               Total = $303.45

Now lets look at fixed price auctions in say Books, CDs, Music, and Games.  Lets say 50 auctions with a final price of $10 each.

Person:                                                                           Store:
Listing 1-50 cost $25                                                        Listing 1-50 cost $10
FV Fees @ 13% = $65                                                      FV Fees @ 13% (under $50) = $65
Cost of Store: $15.95 @ basic

Total = $90                                                                     Total = $90.95

So for the most part everything is a wash.  There are really too many variables to calculate a specific cost point of turn over.  It all depends on what you are selling, how many items at what price they sale, etc.  If you are doing mostly all the same type of sales then I would take a history of your listings, % that sold, Avg price and then plug it into some formulas.  If you are only doing 50-100 listings a month it's better to just get the first 50 free and then pay the insertion on the other 50 if they are all near the same price range.

One trick I thought of if you have many listings.  Do your higher value listings free so you get the most bang for your 50 free listings.  So list all the $50 or more items, wait a day or so, and then list your other under $50 items.  Could save you $.25 to $.90 per listing.

I've not done the math or have the volumne so I'm still doing it the cheapest way that I can.  If things don't sell on CL or they look to sell on ebay well I list there.  So far only listed my $100+ items on ebay.  I just really hate paying the 9% FV fee and then the $.30 + 3% paypal fee.  But if I can't sell it local at least I'm still making money......till I get burned by a ebay/paypal scammer on merchendise anyways.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Unit #3 & #4 down (pics)
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:49:52 PM »
This was a week of a few first in my short storage auction buying so far.
My first true bust it looks like.
My first doing a recover property report with the police.  (found 4 SSN cards and 3 debit type cards all with different names and such from the person that owned the locker).
My first on-site deal to make some cash back after a sale.

This past Monday found myself and daughter heading to one of the two caravan auctions each month in my area.  I love this guy as he holds his auctions later in the day after I get off work so it's easy for me to attend.  The afternoon started off bad.  On way to the auction we both watched a SUV loose control and cut into the median from the other side of the devided highway and roll.  Very nasty wreck, everyone stop to help, and think the lady lived.  Once police and EMS got on the scene I got back in my truck to hurry to the auction.

First facility had 13 units listed in the paper and was down to 5.  Crowd was about normal for this place with mostly regulars.  A few newer faces but still only about 20 people in all.  Prices were fair for the units seen.  Then we get to the last unit for this location.
MondayAAA004

I bid up to $300 for the unit and stopped.  Just wasn't sure if any more then that was worth the gamble.  Unit finally sold for $480 or so I think.  Will have to check my notes.

Second facility was more of the same as the first.  A few $10 units.  Once my daughter said she would of bid on and I said go ahead but you must do the work to clean, sort, etc.  Thinking of all the cloths in this unit (could only see cloths in a 5x5) she passed.  Another unit like that first 5x5 went for $75.  A bunch of the regulars were going "did we miss something" as they were teasing my daughter that unit was for her.

The third and last facility of the caravan is where purchased my third and fourth unit.  Got outbid on a few others I had bid on as they went past my max.  Anyways - the first unit I purchased didn't look like much.  Had a old computer, tv, table, odds and ends, and a juicer in the box.  Also had a bike with no seat and 3 scooters.  I opened the bid for $10, lady that was new bid $20, our resident DH...aka Mr. Five bid his "five" for $25, and I jumped it to $35.  No one else wanted it so got the unit for cheap.
ThirtyFiveUnit

Doing a quick search we found a N64 with all the controllers and cables (no games).  Also, various medical devices such as a nebulizer, new diabetic testing strips, and 3 testing devices.  No idea what I'm going to do with that stuff.  Though with a new tube and such the nebulizer does work.  I put the juicer up on CL at $75 to start.  It's retial was $189 from the home shopping network.  If get even $35 for it I'll of broken even and be happy.  Kids kept the two good scooters.  Other one is going to my scrap pile.  Bike I'm waiting to see if can find a seat in next month or so to sell around Christmas.

We see a few more units but nothing that catches my eye till the last unit of the day.

MondayAAA021

This unit was old looking.  I saw lots of spider webs, dust, etc.  I also saw a fridge (been looking for a godo 2nd one for house), a vac, a steam vac (also need), mid size TV, DVD/VCR combo, some cloths, and other boxes.  So I was interested in this unit.  Bid starts out at $50 and I jump in with $75.  It gets to $175 and the lady bows out.  Then Mr. Five comes in and starts to bid.  We get to $220 when it dawns on me I know what Mr. Five wants.  He wants the furniture and I hate furniture for the most part.  While I have the room to store it I don't mess with it right now due to time and such.  So I turn around and ask "You wanting the furniture right?  $50 and it's yours".  Mr. Five is a regular and has seen me these last few months around.  Him and I have talked and bantered in the past in a friendly way.  So he was a little surprised but said ok.  I was a little surprised as he gave me the $50 right then and there w/o a truck and such.  I cleaned out the locker and stopped at the thrift store he buys for to drop of a copy of my key.  So he stopped bidding on the locker, I made a quick $50 so the unit cost me $180, and we both were happy.

This unit however is going to be my first true lost I think.  The large tv worked but the top edge of screen makes everyone look like eggheads.  The vac has a bunch of busted and cracked hoses.  Not tried to turn it or the steam vac on yet.  Was mostly interested in the fridge and boxes, and why I was going to bid up to $250 for the unit.  Found out the boxes are ALL cloths.  The outside of the unit to me looked like an apartment type unit or downsize.  I was wrong.  It seems while I was right the unit was old (Sept 2005 newspaper) the people had a major fire or something.  The fridge doesn't seem to work.  Found a 150 watt 4 channell amp and 3-way crossover but they are from like 1997 and don't know if they work.  Most everything else is cloths.  So unless I can sell $180 in cloths this will be my first real loss.  Some of the cloths are nice, however much they are wrinkles.  Many are too far stained and such to be worth anything.  Oh well, hope to have better luck next week or month.

Well I wish you luck man.  I'm sort of looking mostly for tools and such myself.  However, as one of the regulars pointed out last week bikes and such start to do well in another month or so.  People start to buy for Christmas and things.

Ya - I went from 0 TVs to 3 now after last auction.  They all power up so testing them out.  The largest works but the top of the picture is elongated so everyone looks like a egg head.  If can't fix that with the menu and such it goes into scrap.  Since TVs cost me $10 to recycle and microwaves $5 I scrap everything I can from them to re-coup some money.

I've yet to see or hear of any such great finds in a locker in my area.  For that to be your first locker you hit payday.  Hope you played the lottery also that day.

Can you post some pictures?  Curious about the coin collection and such.

3 people - oh man I'd of started to wonder if I was in the right place or not.  I love sub $50 units.  I've made money on them.  Not a ton but anytime you can break even or add to your stash it's great.  Happy digging.

Dang - you live that far out I'm sort of surprised you've found many units to purchase.  Is everything in working condition and such?  Or do you have a number of busted electronic items and such?  If so take the time to break them down to pull out the copper and other metals.  Like you I'm looking to squeeze every penny I can out of a unit.  So started to look at other ways to salvage or make some money from broken "trash".

One idea I've had but not tried yet since still sorting.  All of the ripped, stained, etc. clothing could be recycled.  I've thought about cutting out the good portions of jeans and such to sale as scrap fabric.  I remember my grandmother doing that in order to make quilts, patches, and such.  No idea if it's really worth it or not now a days.

With halloween coming up maybe you can make up some "costume" packages and such to sale.  Try to combine items and market them together.  Like the juicer I have for sale, I've added a book about juicing in the mix as a "freebie".

That is a great day IMO.  I'll love if can make $200 once I have a sell.  Just got to find a saturday that my oldest isn't playing a game or practice as she wants to be there also.

I'm not about to dryclean anything.  I use to work in a drycleaners so know many of the tricks of the trade.  I just hate dryclean only cloths.

For myself I've started to make 3 piles of clothing.  Stuff that has no spots, tears, etc. and looks good other then wrinkles.  Second pile is stuff that "may" come clean.  Third pile is the oil stain, torn, junk cloths.  You can easily guess which pile is the biggest.  But, I have 3 huge large screen TV type boxes to sort.  Finding some kids / baby cloths that I know will sell.  Even found a pair of Jordan sneakers for a tot.  Those should sale.

1033
It all depends on the situation.  For the most part I don't run people up.  The one time I really did run someone up was payback for the first unit I purchased.  None of the regulars wanted it.  It was a 5x5 with a few boxes, but a decent guitar showing with only a string missing.  I could tell it wasn't a Walmart guitar so I bid.  One of the regulars opened at $25, and I said $50.  He was like it's yours.  Then out of no where this fat chick with her cell phone sitting on her boob starts to bid.  I was like wtf.  I had put a max in my head of $200.  So we are standing side by side (inside unit, small hall) and we get to $175 and I nod my head.  Auction guy then goes sold and I step forward.  She steps forward also saying it was her bid.  I once again was like wtf.  So this guy looks me in the eye and tells her - he got it for $185 and cracked a joke that he almost cut himself out of $10.  She was pissed.  I was a little also but not at the auction guy.  Later in the day she is asking all of us how do we find these auctions and no one would give her a straight answer.  So we come up to another unit.  I'm not interested in it as it's lots of paper, some decoration, and mostly trash.  She starts to bid and I ran up her $100 then walked away.  It was one of those $10 type lockers.

Last monday I semi-ran up a new lady I hadn't seen but think she's done this before.  We were both interested in mostly the same types of lockers.  She got one just cuz I stopped at my max.  Then I had to laugh when our Dave Hester guy ran her up a few more bucks.  I call him Mr. Five or Mr. Chruch (he buys for a church ran thrift store).  Many times he will bid $5s at the last count.  So if the locker is about to be sold for $120 he goes "FIVE" for $125.  He may do this once, or really start upping the bid if he is interested in it.  Last monday the last unit of the day he was doing that to me.  I turned to him and said "Mike stop running the bid up and you can have the furniture for $50".  I don't deal in furniture and that is what he buys alot.  So he was like really??? and gave me $50 on the spot.  So my $220 unit cost me $180...and may be a bust.  Will start a new post later with that whole story / pictures.

How was the sale Miller?

Did you wash and sort the cloths before selling them?  Or just the jeans that you hung up?

Wondering as I have a ton of cloths, with some being pant-suits and such that are dryclean only and wrinkled.

1035
It all just depends really.  I think more people are paying up then before.  Since I'm new to the scene I don't know what the percentage was before.  However, in my area a good 50-70% of the units posted in the paper get paid up.

As for the items in the lockers.  Many still don't look like they have been touched.  The last unit I purchased had dust / webs everywhere and was 6 years old.

As for valuables - I think it's still staying at the same rate.  I've yet to find gold, jewelry, or such in a unit.  I do know some weeks back one of the regulars found a .25 pistol.  Most everything else is the normal matress, cloths, furniture that makes up 80% of the units.
