I know what it is but I never would have known how to spell it!

China sets and art and again watches. Nobody wears watches anymore so unless it's an antique or has scrap value....unless maybe if it's an authentic Rolex.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Reupholster?

I just don't think you would get enough to make it worth the time and expense. I don't even paint stuff. The extent of my refinishing is wiping the wood stuff down with a wood restore product to get rid of surface scratches or maybe a little gorilla glue here and there....

I'm having the same problem as Calcoastgal. Yesterday the pages kept freezing up so I just gave up. Today is the same and I am able to get it going again with the refresh also but kind of annoying. I frequently have issues with my wireless connection so I had just assumed it was about that.

Definitely low key about cash. Would never flaunt it in any way. Actually have a friend who doesn't do storage auctions because many (don't know how many) years ago he had a friend who was followed home from an auction and killed in his own driveway for has wad of cash so.....yeah, keep the cash on the down low... At the auctions where payment is taken after the whole auction is over we often don't even take the cash out of the safe (yes safe) until time to pay. We don't buy very often so most of the time we don't need any cash, lol.

eBay / Ebay global shipping program
« on: January 28, 2014, 09:39:48 AM »
I know there's been some discussion about this in the past year but I'm wondering how it has been going for those that use it. Last year I unknowingly offered it on some listings. I think I sold a couple items through it and had no problems but stopped using it pretty quickly. Not sure why. Anyway, here we are in a new year and all the sudden it's there again on my listings. Only noticed because I sold a (very fragile) clock for a bit over $800.00 and panicked because the buyer was listed as being in Russia (I think). I always list as US shipping only but there are those that just bid anyway and hope you will ship to them. Then I see he has paid and shipping is very inexpensive. I check and the address is Kentucky. ???? That's when I finally figured out it is an EBAY Global Shipping situation. Anyway, I sent it, he got it (pretty quickly actually) and has already given me great feedback.

So my question is, are any of you consistently using the Global Shipping Program and how is it going? Also, my other concern is items over $250.00 which must have signature confirmation. Who signs? The Ebay crew in Kentucky or the buyer at the final destination?

There are a huge variety of buyers so is hard to say. There are the ones that always snap up the ugly garbage bag units. I would guess they carry about $400-$500. There are the middle of the road trying to make a living types, maybe they have a tiny thrift shop but most likely they do weekly flea markets. I would guess they carry $1000-$1500. Then there are  the part timers, the ones that have a regular job or source of income, but do it for fun and can afford to take a chance. I'm giving them a bigger range, let's say $2000-$5000. Last but not least the "whales". These guys have "people". They don't unload the lockers or go to the dump because they have people to do it for them. I'd say $5000-$10,000 for them.

PayPal / Re: When does PayPal send out 1099s?

It helps if you have a PayPal account in your wife's name as well.   ;)  Just keep it under 20K!

Absolutely!

Another thing to consider...if you are keeping track of your EBAY sales so you can stop before the 20k mark, Paypal counts the total payments you receive including shipping. So if you had $19,500 in sales and your customers paid an additional $500 in shipping charges you will get a 1099.

Love huge flips like that! Few and far between to be sure. Bought a boat at an auction last year only because no one else would bid. In great shape with current registration. Just big and not something most people would have been prepared to move. Paid $500, took it home and sold it a week later for $4200. Didn't even have to wash it. Did have to deliver it though because the buyer didn't have a truck. Actually he didn't have anywhere to keep it either. He had me deliver it to a storage facility. Hmmm maybe I will get to buy it again someday.

I haven't noticed that either.

Where I live craigslist does not really cover my geographic area at all. But I have similar problems selling on Facebook and other venues. I typically just have people meet at my house. (Very small realtively quiet community). I usually don't give out my address though until they text me to say they are on their way to pick it up, that way I do not give my address out to flakes. Worked pretty well so far, if we arrange for a time and they don't text, I lost a sell that night but hey at least they don't have my address.

same here.

So funny, when I saw the title of this I immediately clicked on it to share my use of pool cover and MovieMan beat me to it. My family is in the swimming pool business so I have unlimited supplies of the stuff. I love to use it to wrap heavy stuff like cast iron. I have also used it to wrap larger items that won't fit in a box. Once I sold a large guitar case (rectangle hard case, not a guitar shaped one) and just gift wrapped it in pool cover, taped it well and stuck a label on it. My post office employees thought it was genius!
