SAFE IN LOCKER UPDATE FROM 2/17/12

Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two units went for a bundle - one with commercial cooking equipment and Sysco Food items ($2000) and a 5x5 with a safe!  ($500)  Oh yeah, the safe unit was won by a Thrift owner I spoke with, so I will find out what was in it and report back.

I finally got a chance to catch up with the thrift owner who purchased the safe noted above and thought everyone would be interested in the contents.  She said it was filled FULL OF CDs.  (Certificates of Deposit)  Someone help me, but the only person who can mess with them is the name on the paper.  Basically worthless to anyone else....???

So once again, no Pirates Booty, unmarked $20s, or anything else of value.  I didn't ask if they broke the safe open, or called and got a combination,  but since they also own a scrap yard, I figured it was the former.

Welcome back terrorbow!

I had a buddy who was a golf pro at Camelback Country Club in Scottsdale back in the 90s.  He rented at a local facility, and he would sometimes buy the abandon units.  He found a TON of great golf equipment and sold several complete sets.  With Scottsdale being a fairly weathly area, you might find some good stuff.  Tempe is the home of ASU - so the units there may be college-type.  Then there are the snow bird parks.  Many rent units, and some forget about them.  Once again, retirees have moolah. ;)

An easy way to pick up merchandise you can turn-and-burn is to attend spring training baseball games.  It's a great place to pick up team issued (and free) memorabilia (hats, programs, balls, team photos, bobbleheads, etc.)  You'd be surprised how that stuff sells on eBay.  People from all over the country eat it up.  Tickets are cheap, they hand out tons of stuff during the season, and the games are a little more laid back.  This would also allow you to get autographs, which also sell on eBay.  (Lot of different baseball teams during Feb/Mar - plus Suns and Cardinal players also make personal appearances all over the area for free!!)  Quick and easy way to build up merchandise that doesn't take up much space.  I used to live in Milwaukee, and got tons of Packers stuff when the players made appearances.  To this day, people still buy everything I list.  It does take some time, but at least you don't have to rent a storage unit!

Good luck!

Faith and begorrah - they forgot to mention the Green Beer Vendor, Lady's Auxiliary serving corned beef and cabbage, and the Moonwalk for the kiddies!!  Yahoo!!   :-\ :-\

I agree with Craig - around here most of the facilities look at the auctions as a necessary evil and just want it to be over.  They deal with what they perceive as a "hassle" so they can re-rent the units.  Won't be seeing any leprechauns anytime soon!!  :D

You under-quoted by about 35,000.

If I could get 50k listings at once, I might take the rest of the year off!!   :P

Sorry....typo.    My fingers were a little tired from listing 17,000 items yesterday!! :P :P

Hey, guys...

Got a couple things I do for freebie day that you may want to do, as well.

I've been using turbo lister so that I can work on listings when I can and list them together on Sundays. What I've done is created a folder just for items for freebie-day.

I create lisings for lower value pieces or listings that didn't get too much interest the first time they were listed and keep them in that folder until freebie-day. I was able to get 22 listings up yesterday doing this and had one item sold with buy-it-now before I woke up this morning.

I'll take any extra sales I can get, so this is what I've been doing.

Honestly, I've been a little lazy. I think I should be getting even more up on freebie day.

22 down....49,977 to go !!!!! ;D

Ahem....there is a "catch" to the free listings.  (For us regular folks, not store folks)

If you look waaaaay at the bottom of your My eBay page, they limit the number of "free" listings to 49,999.

So Rockin and Money - you better watch out so you don't go over!!   ;D ;D ;D

Nice unit - just sorry you didn't get it.  Mark that facility with a big red "X" - if that locker was that good, there's potential to be decent stuff in others.   Also, once the tax season is far behind us, you can bet some of those units that were canceled will come up again.

Over the past months, I have seen two or three people's names listed every time facilities have auctions, and every time they have paid up, or delayed the inevitable.  (One person is listed again for April - for like a 4TH time!)  You know it won't be long until their stuff is up for auction - especially for anyone living on the ragged edge like that.

A silver and black video camera still on the charging doc, a Panasonic digital camera, 2 thumb drives, and a purple sylvania mp3 player!!!! A woman purchased a black 2 drawer metal filing cabinet and the items were believed to have been put in there:( If you were the one who bought the cabinet please return my stuff and there will be no harsh feelings. There are priceless pics and videos on these!!!! A police report will be filed as the items being stolen if I don't hear anything in a couple days. Please please please have a heart and return my items!!!! Thanks so much!!!

(smarta$$ comment = Hope they aren't referring to any Paris Hilton-type "priceless" home video!!  Yep, they'll return your stuff right after selling the movie rights!!   :-X)

OK, this might not suck, but I didn't want to start an "Annoy the Crap Out of You" thread.

Went to a facility with 6 lockers run by the owners, not by auctioneers. (In fact, now that I think about it, other than the local U-Haul thing, most every storage auction in my area is run by the facility owners)  There were about 50-60 people there.

Anyway, the annoying part is they don't make everyone line up to look at the unit, so there is a large wad of people in front of the locker. (see photo).  The REALLY annoying part is someone usually in the middle of the pack will yell out "50 BUCKS" - and they take their bid and start up - before half the crowd has even seen the locker!  This started happening at every locker and most bids were up to $300-500 before you got a good look.

Now I realize it's up to the facility to set the guidelines, and with no rules stated up front, it's every bidder for themselves.  But does this ever happen to anyone else?

Bam! $300 for 25 wheels and some assorted tools to trucking guy.
Wouldn't have gone $10/ea for anyone else this soon but I've known him for years and know if I ever need something hauled he'll do it without hesitation.

Nice!

You sure the auctioneer wasn't your brother-in-law!!??  ;) ;)

Nice job!  Heck, it would have been a good buy even at the $100.

Good luck!

Unit #3)  Picture below - went for $450 to an older gentleman I've never seen before - sorry for the split screen photo - some folks just won't get out of the way!  Right side had two small fridges, bike (hanging on right side), new storage rack, cleaning equipment, TV with remote, and on the left side was a bunch of weights - both iron and cement filled.  Also other workout equipment, some sealed DVDs, several tubs, and a near new Dirt Devil vac.  .  Good stuff. I went to $350 on this one too - figuring about $600-700 in sale potential.

***UPDATE FROM 3/10/12***

Facility #1 - 3 units and only 9 bidders.  They were also three of the nicer units I have seen in the last six months or so.  Not "nice" in the sense of designer clothes, VanGogh paintings, guns, and safes - but nice "turn-and-burn" resellable merchandise.  Because of this, the prices were fairly high.

1)  Pictured below- went for $525, bought by local whale.  Had a nice tool box (in front) - half a dozen designer-type lamps in good shape - otherwise it was chucked full of boxes.  No big stuff.  I went up to $350.

2)  Not pictured - went for $270 - interior 5x10 unit with a sleigh bedframe (wood) - TV, couch, tables, chairs, dresser with a missing drawer - it was packed and dusty.  People I knew won, so I helped them unload.  WOW - couch turned out to be leather sectional.  Found the missing drawer - loaded with every leg they needed - and bags full of cushions.  Couch and all cushions in great shape, no rips.  They should be able to double or triple up easily.
