New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Taxes - To pay or not to pay!?
« on: March 01, 2011, 06:03:32 PM »
Your supposed to pay taxes on any and all income. If your just selling things around the house and you don't profit from the sale no need to report, storage winnings your supposed to report earnings.

As far as ebay/paypal goes they won't issue you a 1099 until you do 20k in sales and over 200 sales total. Its not one or the other both those need to be met.

eBay / Re: Currently free listing and free buy it now on ebay
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:21:41 PM »
I hate ebay as much as the next guy but in my opinion it's a necessary evil. Very few places you'll get that kidn of traffic and no matter how wierd the item is you can sell it on ebay.

That's the beauty of these free weeks. I never list expensive stuff on ebay b/c often times it just comes down to the right person who wants your item seeing it. Sucks to pay $5 in listing fees and have nobody bid and have to do that 3 times before you find a buyer.

These weeks its a win win situation for you. You don't pay anything to list your item up front pick whatever price you want if it dont sell you pay nothing.

I agree ebay has gotten really cheap, hard to get a decent buck for stuff but I have made some decent money off certain items.

Bose invisible wall speakers went for over $250, cookware you can sell pots and pans for $30 plus if they are decent brands, sold a 14k gold chain recently for over $150. Sometimes you gotta list a few times but thats why I do it on the free weeks.

Keep in mind the easier an auction is to find out about teh more people will be there.

I find the smaller facilities who don't use auctioneers and often have silden/sealed bid auctions are the best ones to attend.

Anything found on auctionzip or similar places are going to be flooded with people.

I agree, don't spend too much time calling all around. I would say call everything within 10 miles of you if your in a pretty populated area. There will be plenty of auctions close by without traveling far.

Once you start going to auctions you'll find many more. You'll network with people at teh auctions and maybe exchange some info, also many of the auctions will be these circuit auctions where in addition to the one you found out about the caravan will continue going to another 6 or 8 auctions that day.

I sell auctions on ebay starting at 0.99 cents for a list so it's pretty cheap to get started. Don't sign up for these year long subscriptions, you dont need to pay for auctions for a whole year, after a month or so of doing it full time you'll be able to find out about moer auctions than you are even able to attend.

Depends on where you live but unless you know about an area with really great units I don't see any reason to travel more than 30 min from my house max. There's more than enough units in my area.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Advice for a looky-lou needing furniture?
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:27:31 PM »
I think most people who win a unit would be delighted to sell some stuff immediately. If you buy the furniture immediately following the auction it saves them the time of finding a buyer and they don't even  have to move the stuff.

Offer somewhat fair prices though. Just b/c you know the guy got the unit for $300 doesn't mean he'll take $50 for a nice couch when he could take it home and sell it on CL for $300 and recoup the entire cost of the unit depending upon what the piece is.

You may find some deals better than CL since your saving the person at the auction the trouble of moving, listing and selling the time but realize how many units you may have to go watch before finding a piece of furniture you like.

Lots of furniture in units is cheap ikea type stuff or old and junky. If there's nice stuff who's to say it goes with the design of your home or you even like it.

If your not really picky about design though and just want a couch for a rec room in the basemet or something like that I think it could work out well though.

Totally agree with the pictures. I search with the picture button clicked so if you don't got pics I'm not even gonna look at your listing.

Take good pics as well, can't understand these idiots who take the time to take a pic but take a pic with all the lights off where you can vaguely make out the silouette of a couch...lol.

One other tip I would give is leave a phone number to be contacted and select the option where there is no email address at the top.

People who email instead of calling aren't as serious. It often turns into playing 20 questions, people are more comfortable offering ridiculously low prices since it's less personal and you get lots of people who say they are interested and then never return a phone call or email. On the phone you can potentially set up a deal 10 minutes from when you talk to the person where as email you may email someone they email you backthe following day you dont check your email for a day so then you get back to them, etc.

eBay / Currently free listing and free buy it now on ebay
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:02:40 PM »
I'm pretty sure this is for all sellers. Ebay is currently doing $0 listing fees and add buy it now for free as well.

I like to take advantage of these weeks and list high dollar items. Other times you hate to list something for a few hundred bucks have it not sell and you still owe ebay $5 or so.

Take advantage of these free weeks where you can list for top dollar and not owe anything if it doesn't sell. Buy it now is also a nice thing to add that in normal times I never pay extra for.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Online sales channels
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:01:08 PM »
You have experience with any of these other online sites? Have you had luck selling?

Though I think many of ebays policies are extremelly stupid, they favor buyers to a ridiculous extent and fees are outrageious I just don't think any other site can match the traffic that ebay gets.

I notice ebay has been having a ton of those free listing and add buy it now weeks. It used to be every few months it seems like now its every other week.

I really like this and take advantage of it but ebay is still making a killing off final value fees, at least we can save a few bucks on listing high dollar items and can try to list for top dollar without having to worry about it not selling and still having to pay listing ffees.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: need new topic call the vent

On those circuit style auctions why does the auctioneer take an hour and a half to make it to the next facility after the rest of us have arrived.

What do you ladies do to your panties and why are you storing them...disgusting!!!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Ebooks - Worth their salt?
« on: February 27, 2011, 11:05:25 AM »
I sell ebooks on a blog I have as well as lists of storage unit auctions. I only charge $10 for lists and $10 for ebook through my website.

I pretty much always have discounted auctions on ebay though starting at 0.99 cents with $2.99 shipping.  I include an ebook as well as a list of storage auctions in  your area. I make no promises how close to your area I will get. If if your in Cali, AZ, TX I'll probably send you a hundred auctions. If your in oregon, washington, tennesse I'll probably only send you a few and may have to widen the radius around your area.

I don't mean to be rude or a pessimist but if you think it's too much work calling a few dozen storage facilities the storage auction game is not for you.

Once you buy a unit it's a lot of work cleaning it out and organizing. Then it's calling around to dozens of resale shops, putting ads on craigslist and having to return calls and emails to sell your merchandise.

It's not like storage wars where you buy a unit with a piece worth 10k, take it to your expert they give you 7k and you walk away rich.

Personally I write a form letter asking a facility to put me on a call or email list about future auctions. Stamps are expensive at 0.44 cents a piece but I am able to use free postage at work.

It's really not that difficult to call around. Get out the phone book and go ddown the line, ask if there's upcomming auctions, if so they will notify you, if not they will often ask if you'd like to be put on a contact list.

Stores / Re: I don't own a store......
« on: February 27, 2011, 10:58:41 AM »
That's what I try to do but I don't have much luck.

There's one resale shop in particular I go to a lot. They are very picky about clothes they take in both in terms of brand and has to literally look BRAND NEW.

I sometimes have nice stuff, good brands but lightly worn or nice brands but not top of the line brands and they don't want the stuff. I'll often offer her a whole laundry basket full of name brand clothes in great or lightly worn condition for like $5 and she still won't take the stuff.

I havn't sold much or checked out my furn on craigslist as of late but in the past it moved pretty easily. If its not moving its probably priced too high.

Things may have slowed down overall though. I had a guy from cl over at my place to buy a bamboo chair. He wound up buying a bunch of plates and cookware from me and inquired about my roomates couch in our gargage which my roomate wasn't even wanting to sell. I told him I'd ask my roomate.

He wound up offering $100 and I laughed at him as the couch is a year old most of that time been in a couch bag in my garage. he then said he's been watching cl and nothing is moving and offered $200.

In the past when you could pick up units for $35 with nice furniture it was easy, try to get top dollar and if your stlll sitting on it a few weeks later let it go dirt cheap and still make a buck. With many unit prices inflated or when buying second hand you risk getting into it at a price where you either gotta sit on stuff forever waiting for the right price or you don't make all your money back.
