Other Forms of Selling / Re: Reviving the thread - other forms of seling

In my area we have a free to post magazine called the Iwanta.  You can list up to 3 items in it for free.  Each thursday it comes out in print form and people buy the magazine when they want to look for something to buy.  This started way before craigslist and such.  Still is very popular.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Another source of Junk Silver
« on: August 10, 2011, 03:54:03 PM »
Depending on where you are the chance of silver from roll searches is rare.  My kids and I do roll searches all the time.  Am active on another forum that is other coin collectors and roll searchers.  One issue you will run into if get into roll searching is where to dump your coins.  Tellers will start to hate you if you bring in rolls and rolls of half-dollars and such.  So if you can find a coin-counting machine that takes halves and doesn't charge you if you are an account holder it's a good to do in your downtime.

One thing I've hated about the auction hunter show (not seen many storage wars) is they find silver coins and just chunk them.  They are like silver - cool that's XX spot value.  I'm like - well depending on the type / year and if an error that coin(s) could be worth way more then spot value.

For silver here are the dates you need to know:

Dollar - Eisenhower dollar coins - the 1971 - 76 S mint marks are 40% silver.   Peace & Morgan dollars are 90% silver and worth more then spot depending.

Half-dollar -- 1965 - 1970 is 40% silver            1964 and back is 90% silver

Quarter and dime - 1964 and older

Nickle - 1942 - 1945 are 35% silver

I'm actually working to teach my daughter.  She even just opened up her first stock funds...and already crying how the market is tanking like an adult  ::)

But ya - a kid auction war would be funny to watch.  My daughter bids at the school and charity auctions.  Not let her bid at any estate auctions yet.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Wish people could just be honest

Oh ya - I understand that completely.  Already have a setup to clean a unit (generator, shop vac, broom, etc.).  Also, in all honesty I'll walk away from more units then I'll buy.  When I go to auctions (estate/equipment in past) I set a max price on each item I'm wanting to bid on.  If I get outbid I just go oh-well and try again another day.  My biggest learning curve is going to be how to size up a unit in the 5 mins or less that you get to view it.

At the end of the month is an auction I can attend at lunch.  Going to take a few hundered, but mostly my camera and notebook.  Going to try and snap a shot of the locker and record my initial estimate and what the unit goes for.  Later I can go back and re-eval what I saw, what I can now see in the picture upon a longer look, etc.  If I get a unit cheap (under $100) that is great but don't expect it even if it's filled with trash.

Figure it will not be till december or such that prices will settle down some.  I could be wrong, if the weather stays at 100+ the other looky loo's may stay home.

I live just outside of a base being an army brat.  Our local site is there but still an infant.  Six pages of stuff with not much "junk" post isn't bad.

Well it seems to be hit and miss from looking at the ads.  One company has it on all of the ads.  Two other companies don't.  Some list contents by the unit # and name.  Others just say "everything inside" and the other does a generic list at the top of the page.

ex:
The personal goods stored therein by the following may include, but are not limited to general household, furniture, boxes, clothes, and appliances.
Unit #; Name

Guess I'll just have to hit a few as work permits and watch and learn.

Saw this today. Some guy is selling what he claims to be random or mystery boxes from storage units that are supposedly "unsorted" he has too much to go through.

Expect to get old dishrags, underwear and maybe some tupperware if your lucky lol.

yep - same old ploy with a new title.  That is like all of the unsearched jars of coins with 100% wheat cents.  How can you be sure it's 100% wheat cents unless it's been searched.

As for "Storage Auction" in the title.  They are using the popularity of the shows to try and draw more crowds to their auction.  I'm sure people are going to ebay and just searching "storage auction" to see what all people claim to have found.

New to Storage Auctions? / Noob question of the day.
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:01:11 AM »
I've been doing my research for storage unit auctions and such.

1) Is it normal for a storage facility to list the contents in the paper?

2) Is it normal for the facility to also bid on the units?

My concern is that many of these places may be cherry picking the goods when they are doing inspections in the case of #1 question.  My second concern is them bidding in the auctions.  While most bidders get only a few quick looks or maybe even up to 5 mins to look at a unit, they could of had days.  So they know which to bid on and which not to.  Or, they just run up the price to increase profit.

example:
The personal goods stored therein by the following may include, but are not limited to general household, furniture, boxes, clothes, and appliances.
103 - Gwendolyn Bennett- Books, Tv’s, furniture
289 - Leroy Mcmath - Desks and tapes
687 - John Mains - Books
688 - John Mains - Books
Purchases must be made with cash only and paid at the time of sale. All goods are sold as is and must be removed at the time of purchase. Extra Space Storage reserves the right to bid. Sale is subject to adjournment.

Well if you read the ebay ads in the coin section you will see they area always finding these lost jars, penny banks, etc. filled with hard to find and rare coins.

Honestly the chance of rare coins and such is pretty small IMO.  Most people would of either already sold their collections to a dealer, turned it in for face value, or maybe even stored it in a deposit box at bank.  This is why storage units is a different form of gambling.

You do read in newspapers, yahoo online, etc. where people do find stashes of coins / cash in older homes.  This is due to people not trusting banks and stuff during the depression, etc.

It's as my mother told my father and I.  We can drop her off at the casino when we go do our first storage auction.  That way she can't gripe about us dropping $500 on a loser if she does the same in the casino.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: to buy a truck or not???
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:54:27 PM »
You don't want a truck unless you want to pay another $50-70 bucks in gas also.  I drive a Avalanch which I love, but the gas eats me alive...specially if hauling the trailer around.

I'm new at this also in the GA area.  One piece of advice I found online is don't buy a huge first unit.  You will not have the time, equipment, or such to clean it in the 24 to 48 hours you have to get it nice and clean.  Start with a 5x5 or such unit.  Maybe something that you can put everything in your car and suv.

I'm using the search function on the newspaper websites to find auctions.  Everything is normally in the "legal notices" of the paper.  A few are in the ads section.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Shipping supplies
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:28:21 PM »
I wasn't thinking about books when I read your title.  When I use to ebay the NASCAR coke bottles I would ship them in the USPS priority mail boxes.  For $4.95 the customer would get their item in 2-3 days and I didn't have to pay for supplies.  The post office would deliver the boxes, tape, and labels to my door.

I also re-use alot of the boxes, nuts, and such from my office.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Abandoned storage lockers
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:23:55 PM »
Depending on state law (varies by state) once a storage unit has followed procedure they may sale the contents of the locker to attempt to re-coup the loss.  The same applies to vehicles and such that are left at body and repair shops.  It's a smaller scale of your house forclosures.

tclane posted most of the reasons why.  I know in my area; being military, a number of the lockers go up due to troops being sent on deployment or such and not paying the bills.  IMO that sucks but it's a reality.
