Thanks for all of your responses. Cobia, your post was quite a good read.

Turns out that our area has a good number of estate sale companies, so, like anything else, I'll need to hit a few and see what the scene is like around here.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Your Favorite Non-Storage Source For Product?

Dillard's does an extra 40% off their reduced merchandise about every three months. And I tend to pick up things already marked off 75% and use a reward coupon which takes another 10% off. Watches are my favorite, but I've picked up small coach items, sunglasses and intimates as well. I worked at a Dillard's while I was in college so I got to know the store pretty well. My best find while working there were two pairs of Versace sunglasses marked down to $2 each.
That being said I generally just drop in when I'm shopping there for one reason or another and hit up the clearance section.

I worked for them for a while, as well, and I am totally on the same page with you. Went to their New Year's Day sale, but the prices weren't nearly as nice as last year. I had hoped to find some things and come on here to brag about my retail pickin' finds. Oh well.  :P

I had to reset my time zone, but that's the only quirk I've spotted.

So far, so good!

First show tonight, when Jarrod is jumping up and down on the wall he makes a comment...."oh man, I have a drug test this week".  Wonder what that's all about?   LOL!

I caught that, too. I didn't realize drywall dust showed up on a pee-test.  ;)

I liked the "new" look, but do enjoy having the posts with alternating background colors.

I suppose it's one of those things where you'll have pros and cons either way.

Picker's Paradise / Estate Sales

I was checking out listings for upcoming estate sales and I thought I should get some opinions, as this would be my first time.

The company I was looking at tends to mostly do 3-day sales over a weekend, where they charge full price on Friday, 25% off Saturday and 50% off Sunday. This seems fairly typical.

For resale purposes, we obvioulsy want to buy as low as possible, but I'm curious what kind of selection is left come Sunday.

Has anyone had success shopping the final day of an estate sale? I'd also love to hear any general advice or stories you may have from your prior experiences.

The Lounge / Re: Fires- Serial Arsonist

Back in my hometown of Glendale, Ca., we had a serial arsonist who turned out to be the fireman responsible for investigating the fires.

As I'm sure you can imagine, it took a while for him to get caught.

Same advice in the intro thread.  ;D

Great minds, and all that.  ;)

I worry that you may be getting a little ahead of yourself. First, the answers to a lot of your questions are going to be depdendent on your circumstances.

But before we get into working a flea, I have to ask, do you have, or how will you get, your inventory?

To me it sounds like you need to build your bankroll. My suggestion is to start with some low-dollar picking at thrift stores and garage sales. Make a few dollars here and there, reinvest in new merchandise and keep building. Heck, look for stuff on the free section of craigslist that you might turn into $5 and just keep plugging away.

While you build your bankroll, you can start acquiring the tools you need. You may come across your tables for cheap on CL or such. One thing I just thought, if you see a retailer closing, they will often sell the fixtures. Most stores will have a folding table or two in their breakroom. Never hurts to ask.

I feel that if you start in such a manner, you will know when you're ready to expand into flea sales.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Attending first auction tomorrow

Glad to here a few opinions. I think my big disappointment with the van idea is the gas mileage. I had expected the van to be a clear winner over a box truck, but not the case.

And the trailer hitch is a must. If I recall, U-Haul only charges something like $10/day with no mileage fees. So even without buying a trailer, it wouldn't take much to have one for the day.

Thanks for the opinions.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: Why don't I ever find these units...
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:08:33 PM »
I was thinking. Fat stacks of dope, tons of cash and weapons.

Seems like people would figure out what was going on with the unit before it could be bid on. If any of us ever do buy a locker with these things, I would assume that it would be much smaller sums.

In these quantities, it seems like it would be too obvious from the door.

That said, it IS the first time I've ever made a mistake !   ;D

And I hated to be the one to bring you the bad news   ;)

Those were some of the same thoughts we had, but our concern is taller items, like a fridge.

Again, it won't be an issue for a little while, so the debate will continue.  :)
