Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #3...March, 2012

It was a roll of the dice and I lost  :(  The grill is one of those grill/cooler combos that came out a few years back.  Looked inside the cooler and it's trash.  Not sure if can sell the grill by itself as a "tailgate" grill or not.  Need to check it out still.  Tote only had hangers in it.  Other box is mostly ratty pillows and some personals.  Big ticket item will be the breadmaker if it works.  Then a few smalls and some scrap metal.  So figure a loss or break-even once finish testing and selling.  No biggie - even the walmart giftcard came up empty.

Big ticket item is a breadmaker?  I can't give those things away.  I'd offer to send you any I find if you can sell 'em, but the shipping alone on those behemoths would be a bear!

LOL at the giftcard.  After reading (all the success stories) here, I started (doubly) checking any that I found and I finally found one with a balance.....Panda Express for $0.14.....that's like a bite of an eggroll...... :-\

We're heading out today on a 5 facility caravan that takes us about 60 miles south (right to the Mexico border) with one of my favorite auctioneers (he's soooo hollywood!  8)).  I've never purchased a unit from him as his crowds are huge and prices go skyhigh, but I enjoy the heck outta him and he conducts a good auction.

Razor knife and a glove~ ;)

This was #4 THHN that he pulled from a job at a church.  I used to make hand-punched copper lamp shades with a twisted rope (wire) trim, so I have tons of experience stripping copper wire.

We don't bother with the little stuff.  That just gets turned in as is~

Craigslist
Ebay
Flea

Ebay~highest bang for the buck on certain items.  Vintage electronics continue to amaze me.  I've got a Heathkit Oscilloscope Calibrator that has had over 180 hits, 5 bids and 23 watchers!!!
Flea~turn and burn baby! Turn and burn!
Craigslist~for higher end (non-shippable) items.  It's been very slow for me lately, with only a few 'buyers'.

Congrats bogeyman!  Sounds like a good locker to me.  Best of luck on the sales.
When researching listing prices for ebay don't forget to see 'realistic' prices by checking the completed listings.  It's one of the most valuable tools in the market~

Nice Cobia - I want your prices.  My shred price is $12/100lbs.  So 540lbs netted me little over $60 bucks.  Did sell a fridge for $15 and dryer for $25 from back of trailer.  Made a little over $200 this weekend between scrap and flea market.

Moral of the story - look for all the ways you can make money on a unit....even on the trash.

Don did a big scrap run today.  We're running $11/100 lbs.  He did get .65 per lb of (clean) aluminum and clean copper wiring (I sat and stripped a bunch this morning from a recent electrical job) was $3.40 per lb.
Every little bit helps in this economy~

You got his address?  I'll ship him a gaylord box of records.  Between myself and 2 buddies I'm sure we could fill one up.

Who knows, he may have connections in your neck o' the world.  He ships albums all over for various reasons.  Some to artists who use only the vinyl and others who use only the jackets.  Then of course he sells the complete and in good condition ones via various means.  Have you tried listing them?  I was amazed when he told me he bought over 3000 from a guy for $1500.  And how often/how much he buys.  While he's a bit eccentric, I've no doubt there are others like him out there.

And thanks for the lesson~I had to google gaylord box.  Have to say that is the first time I've ever heard that.

Wow Rockin, I don't know what to say....but now I can see how you had your recent $1000 ding.

Why~because I do vintage vinyl and auctions?
Sorry, but if you've never sat back and talked old rock n roll with somebody who lived through the '60's.....you've missed an experience~

And the ding is done.  We've moved on~

Alrighty~so I had over 400 albums listed on craigslist for $150 (yes....I know I could have piecemealed 'em out and made more, but who has time for that?).  Ran the ad....nothing.  Ran it again and Butch called me.  I knew immediately I was gonna like this guy, deal or no.  I had listed the ad so as not to mislead and I told him some of the albums (and covers) were trashed and others were mint.  He replied "yep.  I'll bet the Pablo Cruise and Herb Alperts are mint, as those of us who grew up with rock tended to be stoned and didn't much care how we treated our vinyl!"  :D

Anyway the guy gets here this morning (he lives about 80 miles away) and immediately shook hands and said he got a good vibe from us.  We talked about how we acquired the bulk of the albums and he got real excited and said 'I'm your vinyl guy!  any you get, you call me and I'll buy!'  We continued talking auctions, drugs & vintage vinyl, of which he partakes in two and I two, though not the same ones.  He finally said the deal was done.  Never tried to haggle, although I would have come down a bit, just to move them.  And voila! a great new contact has been made!

You know, with all the flakes that craigslist attracts, for every ten you get one Butch and that makes it all worth while!

 ;D

Ok Ok I got the message too but I get 100 free per month (went and checked).

I can't even use that up. LOL

I will get busy.  ;)

And just how is it that you do that?  Are we special or what? :D
Hear ya on using 'em up.  Since you forced me to start selling on ebay again, I've yet to use up my 50.  I did just list an Dolphins jersey and within 5 minutes I've got 3 folks watching it.....me thinks I priced it too low~ ::)

Just received notice that today is a free listing day on Ebay.  So get busy!!!  Yes I'm talkin' to you Money! ;D

oh yeah....it won't go against your 50 free per month blah, blah, blah.......
Since I received it half way through the day, I'll just relist items that didn't sell previously and hope for the best.  Don't have much time for new listings~

I always forget about Auction Hunters....perhaps it's because it's not crammed down our throats 2-3 nights a week like SW......or perhaps it's because I rarely watch Spike.

Veering slightly off-topic here, I heard a rumor (flea-market style) that one of the shows is planning to come to Tucson for an episode.  Yikes~that's all we need~ ::)
If anybody hears anything to verify that please let me know so I can schedule a timely vacation. ;)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: renting storage units
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:24:19 AM »
As most said, simply ask before bidding.  Here in Tucson we have quite a few that are willing to rent on a daily basis.  That could get costly if you can't get it cleared out in an extra day or two, but if you can.....works great!

Also talk with the managers.  We had one guy who said we could take a couple extra days if we hauled off an old twin mattress for him~ended up not needing the extra time, but for Dave (the facility manager) there was room on the trailer and a dump run on the schedule any way~

135
But if you look at what I quoted back to you, you clearly said Don was asking questions about the locker before the locker went up for auction.
Wrong again~why am I not surprised?  I said he was asking questions before approaching the locker, but that was after the bidding was done, after the payment was made and while discussing it with the storage facility manager.  Sorry if that was not clear enough for you, but I figured with your omnipotence you would have known that or at the very least figured it out.

As far as moving on.......we're in the process of doing so.  Seems you're the one who can't let it go as you keep coming back and getting your digs in to those that don't see everything your way~

I anxiously await your oh-so-smarmy reply~
