Craigslist / Re: Posting pics in Craigslist ads
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:59:19 AM »
I always use several good pictures and make sure any flaws are shown. I want people to know exactly what they are coming to see so I don't waste their time or mine. I won't even look at ads without photos and it really pisses me off when I look at an ad and the photo's are crappy or sideways. Even people that do it with a phone can supply decent photos these days. There's no excuse.

I ship USPS almost entirely because the post office is a block away and UPS 5 miles and Fedex 15 miles (yeah I know you can arrange pick-ups but don't like to deal with that). Also, I love USPS free priority mail boxes. I usually list items with "parcel select" or "standard shipping" and make the decision after it sells. Customers end up getting the item faster then they expect so everyone is happy. Since they got rid of parcel post last year and added parcel select it seems I can ship priority mail just as cheaply. Especially if the buyer is in a neighboring state. Priority mail regional boxes are really inexpensive to ship also. Seems like I use the "A" boxes a lot. Can't pick them up at the post office but if you order them they are still free anyway.  Also it's so easy to just print the labels right from EBAY.  On the rare occasion I sell a large item I go with UPS. Last year I used Fedex for a while which was ok but a pain to drop off the packages. I was always running down a Fedex truck to hand off my packages to avoid the drive to the nearest drop off.

eBay / Re: What is your "return" policy on eBay ?

No returns unless I made a mistake.

eBay / Re: What do you think is the best time for an eBay auction to end?
« on: January 12, 2014, 12:36:28 PM »
I generally aim for 5:00pm on a Sunday since I'm west coast giving it a 5-8 range across the country. Depends on the item though. It if's a more unique item I don't think it matters as much.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: How do you feel about buyer's premiums?
« on: January 12, 2014, 12:28:42 PM »
Don't like them since they obviously increase the cost of the units. Don't see any benefit for the buyers. I would assume the auctioneer or facility like them because they increase their profit. Maybe a benefit for the buyers would be that it might encourage the facility to sell the units sooner since they actually might make a little money?

To the auction:  Cash, flashlights, cell phone and locks

For cleanout: Truck and trailer, garbage bags, gloves, purel hand sanitizer, hand truck (maybe pallets, plastic wrap and pallet jack if it's a really big unit), knife, tape, spider strap, other assorted straps, packing blankets, empty boxes or bins if unit requires it.

There was a unit we bought a couple years ago that was our best unit ever. Paid $500, made over $10,000 profit. At the time there was a comment made by the auctioneer that it was one of three the owner had in three different storage facilities. We have always joked that if another unit owned by "Marie D..." came up we would have to get it. So lately we are not buying any units due to a huge estate we bought 3 months ago that we are still sorting / selling, but we do go to the occasional storage auction just in case there is a unit we just have to have...and because it's fun. So yesterday my husband goes to a place we have never been to that has just one unit and its not far from home so, why not? Yep, you guessed it, "Marie D...". 10x15, looks just like the last one...messy lots of boxes. Had to buy it. Unfortunately others wanted it too so it was very expensive, $2600! Arrggghhh...An initial inspection has unearthed some gold jewelry (maybe $500's worth), a bag of assorted foreign coins and a few old silver coins, 4 mink jackets, some decent furniture and tons of boxes of books. Not thrilled about the books although the last unit also had tons of books and I did make about $1000 on just books selling them on Amazon. Hoping we find some treasure as we dig deeper.....wish us luck.

Seems like they save the best for last or at least later in the auction but not always.

eBay / Re: Do eBay buyers ever ask you to sell outside of eBay?
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:34:33 AM »
It happens occasionally. Seems like it is usually someone nearby but not always. In one case I had tons of miniatures from a closed miniatures store. There were these little porcelain vases. I had about 1600 of them. I was selling them on ebay in lots of 5 then 10 then 20, each time a slightly better deal because I wanted to get rid of them. I think the lots of 20 were $25.00. I would list 10 lots of 20 and the same person would buy them all. We finally exchanged phone numbers and made a deal off ebay for the rest of them. I think I had almost 1500 left at that point and she paid me $1400 for them. No fees. I do make sure to never make a deal in writing though. For me it's nice to avoid fees but not sure what the benefit is for the buyer.

Donations & Taxes / Re: The Tax Man Cometh
« on: December 31, 2013, 10:52:37 AM »
On the topic of taxes...  A month or so ago I dropped two trailer loads (6x10) full of thrift type stuff.  Donated the stuff to a church owned thrift store, and was given a blank tax write off form.  Guy signed it and told me to fill out what I was donating was worth myself.  Not sure if that is the norm or not, but it leaves me with a dilemma.  I have no idea what to put on it.  If I value the stuff too high I can see an audit coming, too low and money is left on the table.

What value would you put on it?  Was about 50% clothing, the other half made mostly up of things like picture frames, baskets, toys, craft supplies, quilts, etc.  (stuff I probably could have sold but would have taken forever to move...)

I think you are limited to what you paid for the stuff in the first place. Obviously if you value it too high it will raise a flag. Say you are claiming $200 expense for storage units and $250 deduction for donated stuff....not ok.

And to Travis.....seriously?  Did you have to bring this up already. I Hate tax time! No fun! In past years I have used TurboTax and definitely recommend it. Worth every penny. Took over a large family business in 2012 (Not related to storage unit purchases) and was definitely in over my head so paid a professional to do my taxes last year and will do so again.

eBay / Re: How do you "prompt" eBay buyers to make their payment?
« on: December 31, 2013, 10:36:12 AM »
Sometimes eBay buyers "forget" to pay within a reasonable time (say 3 days).  When that happens how do you prompt them to get with the program?

I send them an eBay email saying. "Thought you’d like to know I have your (item) packed
And ready to ship to you; just waiting for your payment.  Thanks !"

First I send an invoice with a message similar to MovieMan's message. Then if still not paid in another day or two I send another message (not attached to an invoice) saying something like:  I have still not received your payment for this item. If you need more time to pay or if there is a reason you are not paying please contact me so I know what to expect, otherwise my EBAY account will automatically open an unpaid item case against you.  Sometimes, depending on the item and how easily I think I can get another buyer, I will include a line about: If you bid on this by mistake let me know and we can just cancel the sale so I can get it relisted.  I have had a couple admit they couldn't really afford to pay. I'd rather know sooner rather than later so I can find another buyer.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: New Years Resolutions Anyone?
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:33:21 AM »
Don't procrastinate, lose weight, exercise more, eat better....the usual to do list for the first week in January. Oh did you mean in relation to storage auctions?

You think that one is bad, check out this guy. He got 49 negative just in the past month, all because he wasn't shipping fast enough

http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=AllFeedback&userid=foxconnect&iid=-1&de=off&interval=30&which=negative&items=50

That's crazy. Maybe he's sick or in jail or something. Still has stuff listed but I checked and most recently listed is November so he probably has stuff set to stay listed until sold. If you look at his whole year feed back he was doing fine until the past month or so then just stopped shipping anything. Maybe he's dead? I guess that teaches people to buy without taking a moment to check recent feedback. You would thing EBAY would notice sudden stream of bad feedbacks and contact the seller or freeze the account or something.
