Stores / Re: POS software for your store
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:04:35 AM »
I was talking to another thrift store owner who has a couple of shops in neighboring towns. She did use a POS system, but her employees spent more time getting the POS right than actually stocking shelves or helping customers. In this business, you can't just put up generic categories and let it go like you can in a restaurant or even a store like WalMart.. Our inventory changes DAILY. I use OpenCart as a generic way to keep my sales tax in order. I have very basic items like $.50 toy, $1 toy, $5 toy.. etc. If someone orders a big ticket item, I just add up the amounts in that category to equal my subtotal. The system figures the tax and I'm done. I have a couple of log ins so that I can see if I process a sale, or my wife. When I get employees, I just add them to the system. While it's true, I don't know exactly what I'm selling every day, but I don't know EXACTLY what I have in stock at any given time either.

The only downside to my system that I've found is the lack of theft protection. But I'm a pretty trusting guy. Don't have a need to solve that yet.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone found pre 1900 photographs?
« on: December 26, 2013, 02:42:13 PM »
None pre 1900. I have 6 panoramics from early 1900s all group photos. Not the best subject matter. Still have all 5. All priced between $10-$20 except for 1 which is priced at $50. Girls on bikes, very creepy photo. That is the only photo not dated. Most bikes have wooden tires, so I'm thinking very early 1900s.. perhaps late 1800s. Still they sit. They do bring a lot of attention though.

I don't like using these sites. They inflate the price of shipping on most items, will not combine shipping, etc. I like to use proxibid or auctionzip and deal with licensed auctioneers.

General Storage Auction Talk / Baldwin Keyed Locksets Without Keys
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:50:02 AM »
So in my last locker I found 2 boxes of brand new Baldwin door knobs and hinges. Both inside knobs without locks, and locksets as well as a deadbolt or 2. I sold both interior "egg knob" sets for $40 each and rather quickly too. My dilemma is that anything that requires a key is missing a key! I can bring them to a locksmith and have them rekey at a cost of $15-$22 ea. I'm guessing it's going to be $22 because that's just my luck!

There's about 10 sets that need keys. I'm wondering if they'll sell without me rekeying, and just have the buyer rekey at their own locksmith? Or should I just go ahead and rekey?

Same to you!

Sales have been down for me through the shop. I had a write a check for less than rent this month. I hate doing that, but with Christmas and my other bills, I couldn't pull from my personal stash to cover it. I've got a lot of niche items in which may or may not sell quickly. Lots of antiques which I'll have to sell cheap and they do not sell well on Facebook or craigslist.

I don't have a problem with what he said. I don't see the big deal in it. I don't think gay people really care either. As far as A&E cutting him from the show, I don't think they should have done that either. They're afraid of losing sponsors, when most gays probably don't watch the show anyway. If anything their ratings would have gone up with the "scandal".

A&E and all networks for that matter have to have more of a backbone to these advertisers.

It's not really that way anymore. You can get an Atari Flashback console with 75 built-in games for around $50.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Atari-Flashback-4.0-Classic-Game-Console-Universal/23993446

The original systems still fetch a decent amount with gaming purists.. The casual gamer would much prefer the new flash consoles.

I don't think I'd have a problem. I just wasn't sure because the website says "certain books and documents" and lists examples, none of which would apply to me. I have the set up on ebay now as local pickup, but if I can ship media mail, I'd open up so many more opportunities.

Z-40 was made in 1985. Without the speakers, in working condition, I'd price it at $100. With speakers and in working condition could be up to $250.

USPS is kinda vague on what types of books can be sent using media mail..

One of the heavy hitters around here owns a Uhaul franchise out of his furniture store. He confiscates any Uhaul items he sees in units, saying that "by his contract with Uhaul he has to." I think it's a load of crap, but he gets away with it every time.
