Garage Sales / Re: Looking forward to the summer to have some garage sales
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:01:04 PM »
Though I do like to hit a garage sale or two per summer I was talking about actually having them to sell my storage stuff.

Lots of stuff that won't sell on ebay, resale shops, etc you can get rid of with a garage sale. Like tshirts and stuff like that, sellem cheap as work shirts or rags and you'll sell as many as you have to sell. Other stuff like cheap kitchen type stuff toasters, blenders, silverware, dishes.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Crowds?

I agree normally after a whole day of auctions the last thign I want to do is go to a night auction.

Sometimes though I'll skip the first few of the day if the first part of the morning is far away or a bad area for units. On those days I may go to the evening ones.

The other thing is sometimes the evening ones have a ton of units. I went to one on the south side of Chicago a few weeks back and they were auctioning off 46 units. Normally a good day at a facility is like 4-6 units normally more like 1 - 2 maybe three typically.

It used to be that all the auctions I attended the storage facilites would say any tax documents, old bills, birth certificates, pictures, personal items, etc you can bring in the office and leave.

I loved this as any less stuff for me to throw away is fine by me plus I'd like to see people get sentimental items back as well as sensitive documents.

Anyhow, now most of the facilities in my area t least won't even take any of this stuff anymore.

I did go to one auctioneers auction caravan type auctions and when he was giving his speech he really was very adament to turn it in to the facility or even contact him personally and he would pay the costs to get teh stuff back to the people which I thoguht was nice of him. For the most part though facilites don't want anything to do with this stuff anymore wehre as in the past they took all of it.

Garage Sales / Looking forward to the summer to have some garage sales
« on: February 03, 2011, 08:09:34 PM »
I'm looking forward to the summer so I can have a few garage sales. In Chicago so got 3' of snow on the ground so aways away from garage sales. There always a good way to get rid of items that don't sell elsewhere.

I got hundredsif not thousands of t=shirts and stuff from recent auctions that I just can't bring myself to throw away or give away. At garage sales put a big gin out, say 5 for $10 or something like that and people can use them for rags for washing teh car in the summer or work shirts if your a paitner, landscaper, etc.

There's a guy on ebay Glendon, I imagine some of you have watched his videos. He had a funny video where he said his association came up with some rules lmiiting you to one per year. I guess his neighbors were getting pissed he had a year round yard sale...lol...can't say I would be too thrilled with him as a nieghbor either though I do understand wanting to hustle and make some money.

Congrats looks like they are going for a pretty penny on ebay

Well first off hope I'm not being a board hog but really enjoy this board and the few of you regular posters are great to chat with and bounce things off of but this board could definately use some more action so figured I'd pipe up a little more.

Anyhow, I guess you make a good point, its all about whether its worth it to you to do all the work and take the risk to make a hundred buck when yourhaving to shell out $500.

My strategy has kind of changed. Not many units are going for cheap but I often see units that are pretty full but look like they have lots of garbage, lots of clothes, a few boxes. Pretty much any unit I can get for Under $40 or $50 I take providing its full of stuff even if its crap.

I figure I can probably make back my money on clothes or a table or whatever random items are in there and I'm taking a gamble that I come across some coins, antique, electronics or something worthwhile. I figure as long as I can mkae my money back and a little extra for my effort it's like buying a lottery ticket.

I used to go for nicer units but anything halfway decent is going for a fortune so I'm buying the bottom of the barrel units now.

The guy who started this site has the right idea. Which by the way who does run this site? Is it one of the mods? Anyhow, they got the right idea by cashing in on the newbies, people who watch the tv show, etc.  I'm doing the same thing myself as well making money telling people where auctions are in my area, selling guides on how to make money in this business etc. Gotta try to make that money anyway you can.

Funny the conversation took this turn. Was just complaining to my roomate about how during my lunchbreak I stopped and helped push a ladies car of out the snow. Had to run through a 12' snowdrift to get to her and got soaked up to about my waist then had to go back to work.

And I didn't get a thank you or a waive or anything. Sad to say and I shoudln't punish others for this ass but I won't be as quick to go out of my way to help somneone again.

Movieman, I usually try to go by the same double your money rules. 6 months ago I was making 3x-4x what I put out on a unit. Now i'm happy to double my money and I think doubling is a good strategy.

My problem is that I'm not seeing many units I can doule my money on. I'm seeing plenty of units going for say $400 where I could make $100 maybe $150 on top of the $400 but for all the work required and for the risk is it really worth shelling out $400 to maybe make $150?

I guess that's basically my problem and the premace of the thread. Now that everyone knows everyone goes and those units are no longer going for prices where you can double up.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: PODS Vs Regular Storage

I don't know if that is possible or not...seems like it would be possible. Check it out in Illinois and let us know.

I also got a motorcycle in another lkr. This one the auctioneer walked in, found a baggy on the seat with the registration papers and key inside. Got that lkr for $600, sold the 3/4 sized "Harley" replica for $500 to the storage property manager who gave it to his grand-son.

I used to buy and sell old bikes mostly 70's Honda CB 750's and things like that. I think in the past I had come across some sites where you can do title searches but of course you have to pay.

I'll have to see if the state of IL has anything on the DMV where you can search for free.

Personally I would just have a buddy or relative do it for me, got a couple cousins and uncles who are cops.

On a totally unrelated note anyone else have trouble with the screen jumping around crazy when trying to type under the quote after quoting someone?

I see lots of people on this board and others talk about I just went to my first auction last Tuesday, this is terrible with these crowds.

Up until somewhat recently at least in my area it was myself and a few others taking turns buying good units at $25-$35 and making a killing off reselling them.

Then a few episodes of storage wars come on and it's 30, 40, 50, 60, even up to 300 people at a PODS auction I went to a while back.

If you don't know what a difference even just the past few months has made and your just going to your first auction you really can't complain about the crowds.

Well I suppose you can since you do...lol...but you really have no idea.

1211
I think most of us know every unit you buy is a gamble. Maybe that tv in the unit wont work, maybe there's not a market for whatever got, maybe those purses, clothes, etc whatever are fakes.

You gotta leave yourself plenty of room to make money because you never know what your going to wind up with and what you get reselling can be less than anticipated. Also, since your not always getting a unit there's wasted money in gas, time, etc.

In the past when good units were going for cheap there was plenty of money to be made. With the crowds, some newbies overbidding, etc there's some units where I know you could make money but maybe only make 30% as opposed to 100%.

I guess basically is it getting to the point where prices are getting so high it's not worth the risk or the work for what you'll make off of a unit?

Has anyone attended an evening auction? If so, what was the crowd situation like? There is one in St. Paul on the 14th at 6pm and I'm debating on checking it out.  Wife might not like it, but who knows, might find her a sweet Valentine's Day gift.

I've been to a few evening auctions. I find crowds tend to be worse. Not only do you get the regulars but you also get part time people who are off work and can also come.

In California quads are tittled and to use one in a public forest they need a green sticker that you get when your register. Take the vin number to your dmv and they will tell you the status on the registration. If it has back taxes due you will have to pay them and there might be other difficulties too....like I had when getting Honda Finane to release their interest even though they had stopped trying to collect from the previous owner FIVE years before I got the quad. Took 11 months to clear dmv/honda finance...with Honda being the biggest holdup. I sold it 10 days after I had the pink slip in my name.

So DMV first and go from there. Now one fellow bought a Harley frame and boxes of parts. He went to DMV and turns out the bike was stolen. Police came to his home, took it away and searched his home as well. The stuff he had around was mostly used ad he had reeceipts from some of the storage lokrs he had bought. He got off OK but was out the $2000 plus he paid for  the locker.

Is there any way to check titles online rather than going to the DMV. Woudln't encourage anyone to try to sell stolen parts but I woudln't be too trhilled with the cops searching my house when I did nothing wrong, woudlnt' turn the bike in woudl just dump it if I knew it was s stolen.

eBay / Re: Anyone have success selling clothes on ebay?
« on: February 02, 2011, 10:43:05 AM »
Usually with clothes if I make 0.50 cents off an item I'm happy b/c I already made my money back on units and basically just wanna get rid of stuff. If I can make 0.50 cents and add a point onto my ebay store better than throwing or giving stuff away but I can't imagine how resellers who buy stuff to resell can make any money. All my merch is free and I'm still struggling to make a buck. Guess I'll have to stick to the swaporama although it sure is easier to do selling in my boxers on my couch on the cpu...lol.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: LOOKY LOOS everywhere today
« on: February 02, 2011, 10:40:06 AM »
Yep, we're clueless all right.  People are just commenting about your attitude. If you read a good number of the comments in several forums you should see that people here are for the most part a pleasant group and there is a difference between complaining (or belly aching) about looky-loos, bidders without a clue (too) and serious contenders who have a head on their shoulders.

You've made it abundantly clear which category you fall into now put a couple of years under your belt and all will be fine.

I couldn't agree more. I find pretty much everyone at the aucitons is very welcomming and friendly to newcommers. I find people to be pleasant overall as well, I've made a few friends with some guys I see at the auctions regularly and we'll grab a beer sometimes after teh last auciton of the day.

Your cockiness and atttitude are not going to go over well if that's how you act at auctions. I've seen people like you before and everyone hates you instantly if you come to the auction with that attiutde. All the regulars will run prices up on you not b/c your a newbie but b/c your acting like a jerk.
