Other Forms of Selling / Re: Selling items at a auction house
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:21:48 AM »
The auction house I used most recently takes 30%. One of the auction houses near me takes 50% up to $150.00 then drops to 30%. I made a deal with them once at 30% for all and did pretty well but will not use them again because of the 50% rate. So not fair. They get 50% from the consigner and then another 15% from the buyer. They are getting less and less good stuff since raising the rate so hopefully they will see the light eventually.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Baggage Battles
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:05:58 AM »
They filmed an episode at an auction house near me last year. The auctioneer announced that they were comming a month or two ahead of time and the auction house couldn't take in as much stuff to auction from the regulars that month because the show was bringing a truckload of their own stuff to auction off. I didn't attend but did watch the episode. There were lots of sealed boxes full of mystery stuff that sold for hundreds of dollars. I don't remember where the show claimed all these boxes of stuff were supposed to have come from but it was definitely not the norm for this auction house so I would assume that is what they do for most or all of the episodes, just bring stuff to a location and stage an auction.

I sell items at auction houses that are not going to do well on EBAY or are too large to ship, or too nice to sell at a garage sale or flea market. I have done pretty well most of the time but lately not so much. All three auction houses that I use are doing horrible lately. I had 35 items at one of them a couple weeks before Christmas and watched items sell for $5, $10, 15 that a few months ago would have been $25, $50, $75. It was horrible! I would have made more money selling the stuff at a garage sale. Finally left so I wouldn't have to watch it anymore. I will not be selling at the auction houses until I see things pick up. Maybe in the spring.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone found pre 1900 photographs?
« on: December 26, 2013, 12:27:12 PM »
I've sold quite a few in lots and done pretty well. Best one was a civil war soldier in uniform in a gold foil frame. Sold for a little over $100. Other than that mostly lots of photos ranging from late 1800's to early 1900's sold in large (several hundred) groups ranging from $75 - $150 ish.

Best gold score for us was this year. Found 5 small gold coins totaling in about $1500 value. Also found a bunch of silver coins (dollars, quarters and dimes) and a few pieces of silver jewelry. Other good stuff also including vintage stereo equipment, lots of fishing equipment, etc.... Paid $1500 for the unit, sold everything but the gold coins for around 4K so $2500 profit plus we still have the gold coins. Other than that we have found gold jewelry in assorted units valued from $300 to $800, most sold as scrap.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Pool Equipment

My family is in the swimming pool business. That is an older system and I'm pretty sure the company that made it is out of business. You may find a buyer who needs it for parts though.

Yes you absolutely can use media mail.

Garage Sales / Re: Garage Sales seems to be the best

Luckily I have not lost money on a unit yet. Here's hoping the streak continues. 8)

Might want to consider knocking on wood about now....just sayin...

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Jewelry

I just recently learned about Bakelite bangles. They are worth more than gold, literately, if you find the right ones. I have one that I was going to put $5.00 on. Decided to look it up just for the heck of it. The same thing sold on Ebay a few months ago for $349.99. Mine is yellow and green. If it were black or white with the opposite color dots it would be worth more like $400.00. Makes you rethink some of that estate stuff. I'm putting it on my Etsy store. Hope to bring more traffic there.

I have some Bakelite also so I would love to hear how you do with it. Bought an estate a couple months ago which included tons of vintage jewelry. I haven't sold much yet but did sort through it all to pick out the "good" stuff, i.e. gold and silver. Near the end of the sorting I ran across some plastic bracelets and on a whim looked up how to test for bakelite and found out just how valuable it can be. Now I need to go through it all again to pick out all that old plastic.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Jewelry

Well, first off we have two daughters so they tend to lay claim to some of it. Gold jewelry usually gets saved up and eventually sold for the metal value. Silver usually gets sold on EBAY either by the individual piece if it's something nice or unique or in lots with a minimum bid based on current silver value by weight. I've sold costume jewelry at garage sales and in lots on EBAY depending on what I have.  Currently I am trying to get through a massive hoard of vintage costume jewelry obtained through an estate we purchased. Probably will sell most of it on EBAY.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Confessions of a Newbie

I would have taken the $60 also. There are so many times we are depend on the knowledge of others. Seems like each thing we sell is a learning experience.

eBay / Re: Handling Customer Complaints

"the sad thing about ebay ad them favoring buyers is that the buyer doesn't even have to send a similar looking bag. the buyer could send a box full of underwear back and as long as the weight is similar to a bag its basically a he said she said and a tossup between whether they side with teh buyer and seller"

I was thinking this same thing.  Hopefully the buyer isn't this devious but would definitely get away with it. As far as the buyer getting the option to return it, I'm pretty sure EBAY will always side with the buyer and let them return for a refund but the buyer would definitely have to pay return shipping. Hopefully you will only be out the original shipping and get your product back. Heck, maybe you can sell it again and get more now that we are getting closer to the holidays.

eBay / Re: The 99 Cent Start
« on: November 20, 2013, 09:07:27 PM »
I just can not do the 99 cent thing. I'm convinced that people that list items that way with high value are ready to back it up with a shill bidder or delete it if it doesn't get bid up to it's value. If I run something auction style I start it at the least I am comfortable getting for it.
