Brains, brawn & seed money.....Can't do this business without any of those, but if it has to be one 'solid' item......my computer.  I need it to locate auctions, research inventory and finally....sell...sell...sell!!!

Your recent sale of that broken Lite put me on a new eBay track. An $18 sale on a maybe $1.00 listing is a good return for something that would "never" sell at the flea, but makes sense that almost everything can be repaired by someone who has the specialized knowledge to do that and the place to find those folks would be eBay for sure. And it's easy to ship !

Good deal MovieMan~
Now....how do I test a couple Nintendo64 controllers?
I have no idea if these things work or not.....ugh......

craiglst~They are XP.  We've got the lot listed for $200.  we had an offer (texted) of $100 this morning. Countered with $150.  Countered with $125.  Countered with $135....never heard back.  It'll all sell eventually....but dang!  What's $10 bucks among craigslist folks?

Money~I am sooooo not a shopper and my husband is truly grateful! ;)

The Treasure Chest / Re: Finally a good one

Congrats TN_Hunter~
our first unit was also in Sept, but unlike you we started out with a 10X20 packed to the gills.  Luckily we live on just over an acre, so had plenty of room to sort, inventory and store.  We're still moving stuff out of that unit, but most of it is gone.  Still have a couple odds & ends.

Since then we've landed 10 more units, but none quite as full.  We're now desperate for another big unit as our inventory is rather depleted.

And thanks for asking how to post pics.  I've been tempted to ask, but figured I'd get the 'use the search option' speech.  Instead MovieMan answered it and I have to admit.......with directions like that.....don't think I'll be figuring it out anytime soon~ ???

Nice to read about treasures.  While microwaves and electronics pay the bills, the unusual & unexpected make it sooooo much more fun!

Me too. Lucky to get $50 maybe $75 for a recliner.

I got $125 for a Lazyboy recliner, but it was also a lift chair......and that took me 3 weeks to move~ :-\

and drives the bid often is not what I thought.

So I won that online unit (after sniping a guy who sniped me the previous month) and had figured out what we had $$$ wise.  The final price after the 10% buyers premium was $79.50.
The mattress set was garbage - $10.
Some of the seen appliances were ratty -$10
The giant ficus tree was trashed -$10

So there's $30 of my $80.  Yikes!  But we did find 2 Compaq computer towers, with 3 Planar 15" flat screen monitors and numerous keyboards, cables and mice.  2 beautiful flower girls dresses and just a mishmosh of stuff.

We had some buyers coming over for a stereo cabinet (fallaparticle board from a previous unit) and they took a rolling sterilite 6 drawer unit for $10.
Then another group showed up 5 minutes later for the same stereo cabinet (oops.....), they were disappointed, but we managed to sell them $50+ worth of merchandise including the microwave and fallaparticle board desk from the online unit!

In the bottom of a bag I found a broken Nintendo-ds-lite.  Listed it on ebay for an opening of $4.99.  Already has a bid with watchers.

So as of right now, I've made back $35 of the $80 and have quite a bit of salable items.  I'm praying somebody can come up with a quick $150-200 for the computer stuffs so I can simply donate the 4+ bags of clothes I ended up with!!

Oh and can I interest you in a Lusty Linda (x-rated) pen holder?!  sheesh~

I'm glad I got the unit and it was a learning experience, but frankly~I like the action of a live auction much better.  While I could study the photos, seeing in real life is believing.

OK~well I broke my toe last night (why oh why did the door not stay either open or closed??) so......Don did a circuit today that took him to 5 facilities with the final being about 75 miles away.  Relatively small crowds, but prices were semi-high.  He bid on a couple, but nothing that jazzed him.  The outta town was a small crowd (about 20) with only two from Tucson.  The regulars were determined that the 'foreigners' were not going to get a unit and overpaid on all 3 units and the car.

Wasted day......for Don~

I however just won my first online auction.  It was up for bid last month and I lost out at the last second (danged snipers).  Well for whatever reason.....the unit came back up and this time.....I sniped.  It's a 10X30, but only about a quarter full.  Some interesting items, but until I can get down there and dig.....I won't know.  Don did stop by and talk with the manager and come 9:30 tomorrow morning I'll be loading up (broken toe be damned!).

I'll let ya know how it goes~
Hey....at least it's a unit~and like I told Don.....that unit with our crowds during a live auction would have ended well over $100.  I picked it up for $70~under $85 after fees~

we'll see~

Wow!  I was just wondering if you hated it when the sneaky mousy girl landed a unit or when EF scored 3.......
Collusion, bid rigging, felonies?
Dang~I opened a big ol' can o' worms~

If you are talking about me (for one) I have consulted with my attorney and he indicates I have nothing to worry about when I ask one of my friends "Do you want this one? If so, I won't bid". He doesn't consider that bid rigging or collusion.

No, I won't get a new lawyer.

As to your advice that those of us who have committed this crime should edit what we have already posted, I for one will ignore that too.  ;D

Whew....and I was just getting ready to edit~ ;D

OK~first two facilities cancelled (one after we showed up, but I love the manager and gave him a couple slices of cake~) and the last was down to 3 units.  About 35 in attendance.  Pretty much all regulars.  First unit one small dining set with 3 chairs.  Ended up going for $50.  My husband actually bid on it as there were some sort of gauges (that 90% of us missed).  He stopped at $30.  Second unit 5X10 about a third full.  Went for $300 to a buddy.  We didn't bid and I don't know that he'll recoup.  Final unit was a 5X5 that when the doors opened I looked, gasped and politely told Andy I'd see him next month~a few bicycle tires and dirt.  Yikes!

We do have some on Weds with a little known auctioneer, but with all the regulars crapping out the past couple weeks, it's gonna be tough.  Did go the casino (for lunch) with $22 and came home with $285.......wish that could happen everyday!!! ;)

Oh yeah.....no sneaky mousy girl!!!!  YEAH!!!

eBay / Re: Shipping & Boxes
« on: February 13, 2012, 03:52:02 PM »
I use the USPS calculator and assume a far distance. I live in central texas and assume my buyer lives in maine.

I will say this. GET A SCALE!!! I also will suggest you buy one off ebay. I paid under $20 for a 40lb max scale as opposed to the one I saw at Wal-Mart, 3lb. max for $25.

I do the same thing!  I figure from Tucson to DC should just about cover it!

And as far as a scale~I use my husband.  He can usually guesstimate it quite accurately.  I have used an ordinary house scale.  I'd step on it....weigh myself....step off and back on with the package~necessity is the mother they say~of course it's a battery operated one and the battery just died~ ::)

Just shipped out 4 items this morning and was pretty danged close on all!
Oh and I always use delivery confirmation (figure that in your cost) so I know when it has been delivered.  Important to me as I'm a worrier~

General Storage Auction Talk / Do you care who wins the unit?

We have one serious whale (we'll call him EF) and folks just generally groan when he shows up.  Everybody knows if he wants it, he gets it.  But I have never seen him 'overbid' on a unit.  A few folks truly dislike him, but I've found him to be quite pleasant.  When Don got that nice unit a couple weeks ago EF wasn't there.  He showed up the next day and was talking with Don about it.  He said "you know you wouldn't have won it if I was there."  Don chuckled and said "Yeah.....I would have.  I just would have paid more!"   ;)

When I bid on a unit and it is apparent I'm not going to win it, I'm always ecstatic when I hear the 'yeah' from the back of the crowd, as I know who it is and what it represents.  I told Don one day that I love it when EF goes on a buying spree.  I know that he'll fill his sails and be done, leaving relatively smooth sailing for the remainder of the month~

I also know that there are a number of folks (newbies and looky-loos and one smelly, icky regular :-\) that I hate to see win units, unless of course it's an obvious bust then I'm thrilled!  Nothing will stop 'em more than losing their collective butts a time or two!

I've got certain folks who I am friends with and we have an unspoken (and often spoken for emphasis) rule that when one of us really wants a unit the other will only go so far.  It's worked quite well and I'm always happy when they land a unit.  A young lady actually beat out EF on an antique unit.  He got his bid in just as the auctioneer said sold.   I walked up behind him and said 'You're slipping old man!'  He chuckled and said he didn't know who had the bid.  I told him who won it and that she loves to restore antiques.  He said 'well then that's good'.

About a month ago a gal (who has been driving me nuts) bought a unit (that was nothing but trash) and literally shouted "oh honey.....we got our first one!!"  Many regulars stated (loudly, but under their breath) 'yeah and you paid way too much for it'.   Last week they were out buying up units.  Come to find out she told my friend that they still haven't cleaned out the first locker they bought?!?!  WTF

Anywho~we're going out to a couple unadvertised auctions today.  Hoping to land a unit or two and if not us~I hope it's one of my buddies or EF.  Because if the sneaky mousy girl is there and lands another unit........I might just lose my 'nice' title and pop off at her!   >:(

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Best way to get a large quantity of product?
« on: February 13, 2012, 06:48:51 AM »
Unfortunately, since there are around 4 or 5 flea markets within 30-40 minute drive, we don't really have swap meets around here. I still went to the flea market for a few weeks just to scope out prices and such.

Swap meets and flea markets are the same thing I believe, just different names for different regions.  I try to call them flea markets on this site, but when I talk to any locals~it's always the swap meet.  That's why you'll see me throwing out both words.

Kinda funny how certain areas call things differently~here in Southern AZ we never buy 'lockers', but instead buy 'units'.
