I think you're getting Craigslist confused with Backpage.com.   ;)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Anyone seeing ST ads on this site?

Seriously?

Yep, seriously. All's fair in love and war as the saying goes and I doubt there is any business that doesn't cut corners and try things such as infiltrating a competitor's website.

I wonder why I've never seen any of the ads.

It is a puzzle. Maybe you should give up buying lockers and spend more time online.

Seriously?

I hate being stuck in those sites that won't let you go back easily. Takes a few tries to get out of it one way or the other. Sneaky making their way in here.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Military Surplus
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:26:25 PM »
How do you all deal with strange military surplus stuff?

I research it as best I can and then put it on eBay. In my opinion only eBay will bring the best results
for something like this as collectors will look there if not first, then second. They may know places they would look first, but you don't want to sell to THOSE GUYS because then THEY will make the money.

Wow, I guess I expected a nicer site from California Storage Auctions. I don't know why I expected that, even their main website is pretty amateur.

Yeah, not everyone can afford a nice site like this one. But then they seem to be doing OK, though Forrest Obrien (who by the way Travis is NOT the owner) told me a couple of months ago that by the time they got their online presence up and running the trend would be over !   ;D

This isn't your typical auction story....proceeds will go to charity.  Here's one link to where the car is currently sitting in Manteca, CA at a Ford dealership.  There are also YouTube videos of the car.

Car is valued at 1.5 million...be interesting to see what it goes for.  Buy it, move it around the country and charge admission !

I'm sure you know I didn't expect you to actually tell us your "niche" product.

So, you're making money selling silver now. Bet it beats the heck out of those copper ingots of the past !  ;D

Here's a link to some online (5 I think) auctions in Sacramento, CA.  They end at 6 pm 2 3 14 Pacific time.

When I used to go to this chain they were all bad lockers and the chain had a bad rep. Don't know what their rep is now.

Photos taken from the door just like a live auction.  Good luck buyers !

Online Storage Auctions / Re: How many people buy online?

All I'm trying to do is sway public opinion, which really isn't that difficult since most are in favor of this new technology anyway.

Can you quantify most?  As an example, what percentage of people who buy auction lockers buy them online?
Or, what percentage of storage facilities use online auctions vs. regular storage auctions conducted on their sites by a real person?

Frankly, I doubt there is "any" hard evidence along either of those lines, but if it does exists it has to be in the 1% or less category.

I'm talking about NOW (January, 2014), not a year from now or two to ten years from now.

If such statistics are available please quote your source(s). Anecdotal information from a few buyers or facility owners is only that....anecdotal.

30%

That's low based on the source I'm using, but let's see what other readers here think.

Someone probably said the same thing to the Wright Brothers.

The differences between you and them are numerous, but the chief one is they were only trying to overcome gravity.

But the site or someone (Government??)  is going to have to lay down the law on how photo's must be taken to meet the minimum standard.

Don't you mean 50 state governments ?  The feds will never get involved with something like this so you're looking at 50 states and I doubt they would get down to the nitty-gritty of what some photos look like.

It's one thing for a state to protect the "rights" of a former tenant who may lose his belongings to an auction, and quite another to give a prospective buyer a better shot at a good buy.

If the storage sites or the online auctioneers set standards that's another matter, but one is still looking at a lot of variable from state to state and even city to city.

Nope, I don't think these birds are going to fly.

I like the red sculpture, is that one of the pieces you bought? I also like a few of the pieces of art leaning against the wall. Do they have an Asian influence?

No, I thought about it but the base is broken on one corner. The guy who bought thought he would just jury-rig it with some black cardboard, but I didn't want to work on repairing it and wasn't sure it would sell. He has a corner in his antique stall for mid-century modern which this piece very broadly falls into.

He also bought one piece of the flat art. After buying it he found the documentation on the back and was happy it had originally sold for $250. Art prices on non-name artists leave a lot to be desired in my book. He only paid maybe $20 for it so he should make money anyway.

Overall the locker wasn't that great, but I'm picky and limited in my selling venues.
