eBay / Re: What is the best DAY to begin an eBay auction?
« on: March 13, 2014, 08:23:45 PM »
Here's what I got from the web:

Daily peak visitor-ship is between 8:00 PM eastern time and 10:00 PM pacific time.

Typically, Sunday is considered the best day to end an auction followed closed by Saturday and then Friday.

- When I was really into reselling, I tried to make sure the sale ended on Sunday night. Most people work weekdays which then would allow them an opportunity to bid on my item if it was still up during the weekend.

depending upon the category you sell in peak times could be very differnet. video games is probably younger people, baby clothe are stay at home moms so probably during the day, etc

eBay / Re: What would you consider the best feature on eBay?
« on: March 13, 2014, 08:22:39 PM »
No feature on ebay is really that great, it's standard stuff that should be on any ecommerce store. If anything I have complaints about their features. The one good thing about ebay is the audience, nowhere else can you get such a large and diversified audience.

If I had to pick a feature it would be being allowed to charge a restocking fee but thats only an asset because they so heavily favor buyers so its basically a feature that counters their other crappy features lol

eBay / Re: Selling Limits..

Have you ever come close to selling worth of 100K a month? If not then you have nothing to worry about. If so make sure you use every penny of that 100K and the next month you can call up and get a 35% increase so next month you have 135K worth of merch, next month more.

I've done over 200K a month on ebay consistantly and would caution you if you are approaching anywhere near that slow your role. They will start holding a quarter of your sales for 90 days on top of taking at least 10 grand from you. your better off slowing your role and selling a bit less than getting holds and reserves put on your account.

eBay / Re: Ebay Non-Paying
« on: March 07, 2014, 04:04:27 PM »
not sure if you guys ever run into competitors buying your stuff and not paying just to tie up your listing. this is probably more a problem if your consistantly selling in the same niche as its not worth the time to mess with someone who's going to sell one item and go away. anyhow, i set additional blocks to things like if someone has feedback under 10 they can only buy 3 items in a week or so many items per day. basically stops idios from clearing out my listings if i ever put up auctions. i primarily stick to buy it now anyway tho

I don't think that is necessarily the best method, some people just don't sho pon eBay as their primary shopping method and only occasionally need to go to eBay to acquire certain things. When I first signed up for eBay I bought 1 thing then I did not buy anything else for about 3 or 4 years. Then I bought and sold a bit in a certain category to obtain some items I wanted with little money investment. This was before I got into storage auctions. Now I have fairly decent feedback IMO not too high around 250 with 100% + but I still only buy maybe once every 2-3 months. So I guess I am saying long history low feedback only tells me they just don't buy on eBay that often, not that they will be a problem buyer. I would be more scared of a 1 month history with 50 feedback already, because most sellers leave positive feedback as soon as the item is paid for, then that person scams and gets kicked off eBay but not before getting a bunch of free product and wasting a bunch of sellers time and money.

good point, i know people who are like i hate ebay but every now and again go there looking for a used car part or something like that

cou can block some of them in your buyer requirements, i have everyone blocked that has more than 2 non payments in 6 months i believe

I always set blocks on my ebay stuff but the blocks are pretty weak. I thougth it was 2 non payments in a month not 6 months you were allowed to block. IF thats the case 2 in a month is a pretty deadbeat ebayer already so doesn't help much. The other blocks agian help but not that much ebay tries to help people starting out and wants people buying because they amke money off every sale so they dont go allow too much stuff to be blocked

I have a store so I get to use the "require immediate payment" option. As soon as it's bought they have to pay for it or the sale doesn't go through.

I could be wrong but I don't think you have to have a store to require immediate payment, I think just buy it now listings and not auctions

Yeah really nothing we can do about non payers besides block them after a bad experience. This is kind of why I do exclusively buy it now listings. Even if people pay because of the volume I have if someone buys and doesn't pay for 3 day its now like 5 pages deep in my paypal account and I have to remember to pack up stuff from days ago, I like to get stuff out as soon as it comes in and be done with it.

Buyers know they can buy something and if they decide they don't want it, find a cheaper price, etc they can just not pay and as long as they don't exceed 3x a month no consequences really.

I would recommend you guys charge restocking fees. People will be less likely to buy something they "maybe" want or want to "try". Also if you do get returns you make 20% which should cover your shipping and time and you get to resell the item win win. I actually put up a post about this the other day...

eBay / Re: Can anyone recommend a good book on selling on eBay?
« on: March 03, 2014, 01:28:01 PM »
For most people the 12 free pics is enough. Some don't even use all those, and the pics they do publish are so amateurish it's a wonder they ever sell their items.

I use the 12 free and up to 20 within the text as html inserts. That 20 would include the 12 free ones, so another 8 pics not shown in the regular eBay area.

IMO, the pics within the description are what sells the item. They are larger and I can put appropriate comments below the pics to explain the item. I can also circle some aspect in red pointing out a bonus aspect or a "wart"

Pictures within listings actually harms you search wise though not terribly so I guess you have to make a decision is having good pics with descriptions worth a bit of a knock in the search dept?

Not criticizing you I'm running into the same thing and have chosen to harm myself a bit in search for a more professional presentation and more informative listings. What mine is in reference to is using templates. This is incredibtly stupid since ebay themself provides templates but ebay uses the fist 150 words of your title as the main determining factor in ebay search algorithm. If you have plain text your first words are probably 1 Ounce Silver American Eagle Coins MS89 US Mint etc, etc, etc. Basically all relvent stuff. If your using a template on the other hand your first 150 characters are going to be nothing but <dsfdsasdfd3483743843> and basically just HTML code so I'm not showing up the best I can. I've heard this directly from ebay reps and other big time sellers so I believe it to be true.

Now in my case I find most people are using templates in my category so most other big sellers aren't getting an advantage over me. I rank pretty well in search so dont think its affecting me that much and more importantly I've decided that having a professional presentation and well laid out description and pics outweighs any minor knock in search I may get for doing things with a template.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Cool Cam

This past summer I was stocking up on Polaroids from flea markets and resale shops as Urban Outfitters was selling refurbished 600's for like almost 200 bucks if I remember correctly. I think I got about 6 or 8 of them. My girlfriend loves polaroids so keeps trying to get me not to sell them but with film costing like over a buck a shot I told her she's not going to be doing much shooting so I'm selling them. After hearing this I'll have to go list a few on ebay

eBay / Re: Do You Charge A Re-Stocking Fee On Returns?
« on: March 03, 2014, 10:04:10 AM »
Bump, sorry i hate hwen people bump things but I'm surprised nobody has commented or has any interest in this subject, especially when I've heard so many people say they choose not to be power sellers or top rated sellers because they dont want to have to accept returns. This basically sovles that problem, you get to offer returns and get all the benefits that come with it from a search algorithm perspective as well as in being able to be a top rated seller and power seller and take advantage of shipping and fvf discounts as well as better search ranking. First off this discouraages returns but if someoen does return something at least your paid for your time and shipping costs. Surprised more people aren't interested in this

eBay / Re: Can anyone recommend a good book on selling on eBay?
« on: March 03, 2014, 10:02:10 AM »
I really don't think there's much of a use for books. With ebay constantly changing it's fees, and policies any book which is published is probably out of date in terms of new policies and fees by the time it hits the shelves.

I would imagine many books tell you to use HTML code for pics because ebay charges you but within the last few months or year ebay now gives you 12 free pics so your actually better off using their picture system as ebays search algorithm doesn't read HTML code well so your actually punishing your listing by using your own pics in HTML code.

Other things like they probably strategise based on ebay charging listing fees where as ebay doesn't really charge listing fees anymore if you ahve a store they are either free or you get thousands free every month anyway so you really need to be more focused on Final Value Fees instead of listing fees.

There's a ton of great blogs, forums, message boards where people can offer advice and strategies and this stuff will be much more up to date and much more real experieences from real people vs an author writing a vague overview of how to ebay.

I would also encourage people to read ebays TOS and the customer help tab section so your fully aware of shipping fees, policies, etc

I have the DVR set to record them all. Every now and then I'll watch an episode when I have some free time. When the shows first came out, I was glued to the TV...didn't miss an episode.

yeah early on i kinda enjoyed it, after learning the truth about the show was a bit turned off but more so seemed like the show took a different direction and they turned it more into a drama than a reality show about our industry

Other Forms of Selling / Re: BackPage.com Allows Gun & Ammunition Sales

ebay lets you sell magazines i believe, i picked up one for my beretta not too long ago. i would use armslist for selling the mags, you'll get higher prices, deal with more upstanding citizens vs backpage prostitute mongers and criminals lol, and its free
