This auction held a lot of promise. There were 40 lockers scheduled...20 at auction time. Still a good number.

Auction started at 8:30 and I drove out the gate at 4:15....almost 8 hours of watching stuff come out in boxes or individual pieces. The first 15 or so lockers weren't great to say the least. Finally a few good lockers came up.

I paid $200 for 6 pieces and am hoping they'll turn into about $700 to $800.

Once the bulk of the stuff is gone they offer the aisles of leftover as a batch. Then if there is still stuff in the locker they offer it as a batch. A friend got the locker remains of one locker for $110 and IT PAID OFF.

He got 3 heavy boxes, one of which was labled reel/reel.  I opened it for him and it had a beautiful Akai reel to reel recorder. There was a box of 10 Ampex metal 10" reels of tape which are also sellable.  The other boxes contained black faced, rack-mountable Heathkit components. I had never seen anything like them. They were definitely more modern than any usual heathkit test equipment I've seen.  Without looking them up I'd say he will sell all the pieces for around $700 or so; a good return on investment.

Here are some pics.

Went to a piece by piece auction the other day....listing showed 40 lockers...boiled down to 20 by auction time.

I got some good stuff (I hope) and a friend did really well.  Will post some pics later.

Here's a link to the details on this auction and some pics of the activity and goods at one locker.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction Scene #2....February, 2014
« on: January 31, 2014, 12:30:04 AM »
Going to be busy on Feb 1, 2014 so am getting a jump start on this thread.

I have to say the auction scene isn't as exciting or as rewarding as it was in the past, but it's still interesting to hear the good and the bad stories even if most of them come from only a handful of forum members.

So....get going FEBRUARY.

eBay / Re: Another Reason To Use Firefox for eBay
« on: January 29, 2014, 10:02:03 AM »
Downloaded entirely new version of Java and so far doesn't seem to have a positive affect on eBay viewing.

Meanwhile, Firefox delivers.

What about ActiveX filtering...on/off.  Would that have any affect on eBay viewing?

Most of the time I trust the providers of such things (MS, etc) but if I mistakenly turn a feature on/off and it affects things in one place but not another it's hard for me to decide what's going on and correct it.

*****

Edit:  Yes I rebooted after downloading the new Java.

There was a recent Java update. If you do not have it installed then the eBay pages will give you issues.

Thanks, I'll check that. Sometimes I push the "ignore" button when such things pop-up wanting me to download them.

eBay / Another Reason To Use Firefox for eBay

OK, this is ridiculous....Internet Explorer problems with eBay....

For the last two days (January 29, 2014) IE won't show results of pushing the completed listings button after having done a search for a currently listed item.

We all know that the COMPLETEDS is what is important to us as sellers so we can more accurately price our items.

So...... I switched over to FIREFOX and no problems. Works as it should.

Why in the world a big outfit like Microsoft can't get things working right ... or leave well enough alone when things are working is beyond my understanding.

Craigslist / Re: cList....is dead!

I guess it comes down to my geography again.   Lots of people.
Probably works best in the city.

I just read some negative reviews. One said he had put his zipcode in and NO ITEMS came up. This was typical of eBay Classifieds when I looked at them a year ago.

The zipcode feature doesn't seem to be part of the regular computer website opportunity so must be on mobile devices only.

Time will tell. I was surprised to see the service had been around since sometime in 2012. Your mention of it ws the first I had ever seen.

Other Forms of Selling / New Way of Buying and Selling Online

I first found out about OfferUp through a message posted in the link below.

Below that link are my thoughts so far on this service.

http://storageauctionforums.com/craigslist/clist-as-dead-as-the-forum-!/msg33310/#msg33310

It's free to join and you can do that through your cell phone or tablet. You can also do it over the internet on a compute which is what I did.

You really have to look at the site to get a idea of how it might work for you. Right now I don't think it will work for me for the following reasons:

1) It is really designed to be used by mobile devices like phones and tablets.
2) Given #1 I won't use it because the iPad I have (version 1) doesn't have a camera and my cell phone isn't that    smart.
3) It apparently only allows one picture...I'm used to using 12 on cList and you can actually post 24 if you want to.
4) The interface seems clunky to me. It is popping up a variety of items available to me...mostly about 50 to 75 miles away which I would never go to.
5) The categories as I see them are nothing as extensive as cList provides.

Time will tell on this one, but eBay Classifieds doesn't do much in my area so I don't know if this one will either.

Perhaps if you live in a major metropolitan area it is better, but that's not true for most people I think.

OfferUp is killing it.

I looked it up after you mentioned it.  I joined. They are basing my interest area on my ip which is 50 miles away from where I live.

Yes, there are items and the distances show, but I am seeing a scattering of pics of different types of items.

I see some grouping categories on the left but I haven't looked at them yet except for the TOOLS category. Two tools came up.

This may go somewhere but for now I'll stick with cList. I think more people are open to the kind of organization they have on the main page and the opportunity to pick the state and city you want to look at.

I can tell you that eBay Classifieds hasn't been very successful in my area and you would think with their name they would be, but nope.

eBay / Re: Ebay global shipping program
« on: January 28, 2014, 10:21:42 AM »
I am consistently NOT using it.  It has to be turned off in several places if I remember correctly and an exclusion list helps too.

I just don't trust it. Sure, the buyer only pays for shipping to the global shipping center (as far as the immediate sale goes), but in the few instances I even tried it, once they found out what the additional shipping would be they never even bid.

It's just not worth it to me. There always seems to be a US buyer, and I no longer waste time with multiple emails to people in Croatia about how the system works.

Thanks, but no thanks!

Online Storage Auctions / Re: I don't understand how this one works

OK, no response yet. Travis is busy finishing up the transfer of all materials to the new and improved website.

On a related note to no response, how is it that this thread has been viewed 20+ times but absolutely NO ONE
has even a "I don't know either" to contribute.  Maybe the readers who never contribute don't know HOW to post a message !

Certainly Alloro will come back with "I don't know either".  ;D

Online Storage Auctions / I don't understand how this one works
« on: January 27, 2014, 09:55:02 AM »
Take a look at the auction in Tarzana, CA shown in the link below.

http://onlinestorageauctions.com/auctions/non-lien-sale-private-seller/tarzana-california/

In one area it says the virtual auction ends late January, 2014. Over to the right bottom of the listing it says the live sale "starts" January 10, 2014.

Does this mean at the live sale no one wanted this 5 x 5 and it's still for sale "virtually"

Yet another mystery in the growing business of online auctions.
