Tampa-Saint Petersburg, FL.
New Orleans-Baton Rouge, LA. (further then 40 but I think they are in the ballpark of what you are looking for)
Washington DC-Baltimore, MD. (Not "smaller" cities I know, but they weren't on the list)
Denver-Aurora CO. (Not sure if that counts cause Aurora is pretty much a suburb of Denver)

and....it sometimes tells me things I didn't know.  For example if they ask for a item back, investigating it has revealed that the $2 item is actually a $400 item.  Yes that item your grandfather gave you before he died is of immense personal value to you.....uh huh.

Uh, what kind of karma are you trying to generate with this statement? hmm?  :o

Really getting a lot of mixed bag experiences around here. Some auctions lightly attended, decent prices. Others, heavy attendance and STILL ridiculous prices! Come on people! It's not the Spring of 2010 anymore! WE ALL KNOW THE SHOWS WERE FAKE! For some reason a lot of people just can't break the habit of bidding up the units. Oh well. Crowds & prices seem to be coming down enough at various locations that I think I can just start being more patient and pick units here and there from the more sane auctions.

Heat is always a good thing for driving down the prices. We haven't had any excessive heat yet so far this summer, really pretty rainy so far.

How did I miss the announcement that you getting into a store ?  If I missed a thread can you give me a link, or otherwise fill me (us) in.  With only 10 or so posts a day of late on the forum almost ANY news is good news !

Craigslstauction hasn't been active for about 3 months here, rockintheretro and the gal from Florida have been absent for what seems like a year.....pretty DULL around here.

Yeah I got a good deal on some warehouse space and it was large enough to set up a section of it as a store. Sort of a hybrid re-sell store/ discount warehouse. It's kind of off the beaten path so it's not really in a good retail location even though it is zoned for commercial business. We thought since we are already paying for the space why not try to do yard sales there.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Tracking Your Profits

By the way... Another reason I may have less profit then expected is I'm one of the VERY FEW who run this business by the books! How many of you remit sales tax on all sales to 2 different states? How many of you pay business licensing & business tax in 2 different counties? How many of you pay yearly articles of incorporation fees to the state? how many pay excise tax to the state? How many pay income tax to the State & Federal Government on your profits?

From the very beginning I treated this venture as a business and not a hobby even though I've only been doing storage auctions part time until very recently. I have an accountant that does my books and according to him the last 2 fiscal years combined I have a running loss of around $7,000. Since this was part-time business, I had other income supporting me. Even though I have a running cash loss, I probably have 3 times that amount in inventory & property. Inventory & property is an asset on the balance sheet not "profit". If I were to sell all I had in one month then I would be looking at a killer profit! Unfortunately, I only sell a fraction of the inventory per month & there are fixed operating costs plus variable costs always accumulating. Not to mention buying more inventory (storage units). I no longer have the luxury of having one good month, say making $2000 in "profit", then taking the month off to enjoy the spoils. The fixed cost of the business are always chewing away and will eat up the profits from one good month quickly. The first 1-1/2 I would itemize the units to determine how much each unit would make. I no longer itemize units and just do a month to month cash flow sheet. I had an expensive Spring & sales have been slow this summer, but I'm showing around $1700 "profit" for the year. How I fair at the end of the year will just have to wait and see.

Tracking overall profit has been easy...ZERO! In last three years NADA.

Now comparing how much I buy a unit compared to how much total sales are? Haven't done that in a long while. If I had to guess overall it's about 2.5:1 ratio. This past Spring was brutal, probably only getting a 1.25:1 return. Last Fall was good, I was getting probably around 3:1 return.

I've pretty much figured to cover cost of inventory & all operational costs I need to triple the money across the board for the whole year to make a "profit". That hasn't happened yet. Still too competitive out there.  :'(

During the sort I pull anything that will get at least $10 on Ebay & sell those articles there. At yard sales I would sell clothes at .50 cents & jeans + jackets for a dollar. Now that I have a store, anything not Ebayable gets rocked out at .25 cents a piece. I move a lot more clothes this way. Not really leaving "money on the table" cause the velocity of money coming in at that price is quicker then at .50 cents or a dollar a piece & I have less clothes taking up space or need to donate. Any clothes during sort that have stains, tears, excessive wear; socks & low-end under garments go straight to neighboring thrift store.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #6...June, 2013

I can say with confidence the crowds are definitely down. Lower then they've been since the TV shows. Few newbies coming out, & many of the 1-2 year newbie have stopped coming out and many of the old timers have quit too. Prices have come down some, but not as much as the crowd. Right the the remaining old timers & 1 year newbies are battling it out trying to establish themselves as big dogs or big dogs again. This behavior is keeping the prices on the high side, but I am managing to win units at prices I am comfortable with. (well, some what. I think prices need to come down some more to really ensure profitability).

The challenges never end. Although crowds & prices have come down, the sales have nosedived in my area over the last month & were slower then normal through Spring.

At least you gave it a try. It's been tough this year, sales are coming slower then usual it seems, and there's competition too it seems. Good luck in your new venture.

In my opinion it's the "long haul" that counts and most won't make it for very long given the circumstances under which they are starting in today's environment.

Also, CHANGE is definitely necessary (due to the tv shows) and that's what has kept me going. Picking is where it's at for me right now...tomorrow who knows what it will be.

I know what you mean about change. The last couple of months over half my inventory has come from donations, people bringing my stuff to buy, and commissioning living estates. I have 4 living estates I'm working right now. Storage auctions are only a component of where I get inventory to re-sell (like most ardent re-sellers), point being, things have changed enough with the TV shows, it's difficult to try and depend on storage auctions for 90-100% of the inventory to re-sell like a person could do in the past before the TV shows.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Unexpected Score - I love Jordans
« on: June 16, 2013, 10:11:37 AM »
A few months ago, I bought this unit that had about 15 pair of Jordans & Nike Air Force 1's in new or like new condition. I'm just now getting around to posting them on eBay and I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. 4 days left and already at $177 for a used pair of shoes. The first pair has already tripled my expectations. I think I may have hit a valuable collection but only time will tell. Can't wait to post the rest of them.

Only bad part, the highest bidder has zero feedback.

That happens every time I list things like "Jordans" & "Snapbacks". It's been about 50/50. Half the time smooth transaction, the other half; flakes.

I like MMs' advice - Don't do it!

I have to admit it's been harder then I thought. The learning curve is pretty steep, and upscaling the business model is no easy task. It becomes an addiction though, once it hooks you in it's hard to give up, as long as some cash flow is coming in. It really is behaviorally similar to casino gambling or gold prospecting.

194
I totally understand both sides here of the spectrum. I suppose I sympathize more with single parents, out-of-work-parents (now that summer is here), and parents who cannot afford a sitter. Everyone has to try to supplement their income somehow, and I can't look down on someone who needs it. That's all I am saying. Consider the "why" the kids are brought more than the kids are there.

Yep, that's why the kids are either at the shop or at the auctions. Anyone seen how much it cost to put more then one child in a summer camp!

The Lounge / Re: Texas....72oz steak !
« on: June 16, 2013, 09:57:27 AM »
I thought Travis was the biggest thing in Texas until I saw a feature on the CBS Sunday Morning Show...

...turns out you can get a FREE 72 oz Steak at the link below....IF you can eat it in one hour.

After checking out their website, look on the left of the screen for the list of people who have actually eaten a 72 oz steak in an hour....OR LESS !

bigtexan.com/

Don't quote me, but I think I remember a TV show about the restaurant and the record holder for finishing the steak in the quickest time is a Bengal tiger!
