General Storage Auction Talk / Re: The "Safe" factor...
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:23:49 AM »
Sorry, but I'm living up to my pledge not to look at links that contain the words "sealedbidsonline".  Maybe this is the new way to buy lockers, but in this regard I'm an old fashioned guy. I'm guessing your thread here isn't about an actual safe being in a lkr, but rather whether it would be "safe" to bid on one lkr vs. another based on a picture (or half a dozen pics).

I'm a gambler when it comes to buying some lkrs, but I can't make the leap to gambling on a two-dimensional view of a lkr.

Am I correct in thinking that the sealedbidsonline works only online, and that if I lived within 10 miles of a unit I couldn't actually attend a physical auction at that location? I would guess that is the case as if they did it live and online it would be a nightmare co-ordinating multiple bids coming in on-site and on web-site. They wouldn't have the capability of a place like Christy's!  ;D

I'm also in the works to getting a free unit from a co-worker.  She approached me to ask if I wanted any of the items from a storage unit they need to clean out.  They are getting out what they want and everything else I can take / Goodwill.  So will see how that turns out.

Hard to lose in a deal like that !   ;D

Why hasnt there been a re-cap of the Storage wars texas?

That's because the new season starts this week.

Thought for sure there where of been post after post from the show?

There will be once it starts.

I didnt watch it yet just say it on dvr.

So you recorded it but haven't watched it?  Given your feelings about the TV shows
why bother taping let alone watching.

I'm personal glad I didnt see post  after post on the show since this fourm isnt about a tv show  but I'm sure I just spoke to early.

Even if you see post after post (maybe a dozen at most) it doesn't mean you have to
open the threads and read them. Exercise your free will. Avoid any postings about TV shows.  That's what I am planning on doing when I see posts about online auctions in Utah.

The last unit I bought was May 9, 2012 but I broke that 3 month dry spell the other day by buying two 5 x 10s.

I got the first one for $100; nothing special except for the collection of M&M plastic dispensers (12" tall size) maybe 15 in total. Also an M&M phone and lamp. Those will pay for the unit and other items will be the profit though it won't be much. The usual 6 or so boxes of nothing but trash to throw away.

I got the 2nd unit for $10. It was showing a tilted over wooden filing cabinet (lateral style), a nice office chair, flattened cardboard boxes AND  a white KitchenAid mixer over on its side. Missing the paddles but has stainless steel bowl. Haven't plugged it in yet, but if working they typically go for $100 on eBay. If not working, still worth $40 or so for repair guys.

About 20 lkrs spread over 3 facilities and could have bought some more but prices were a bit beyond what I wanted to spend for the 5 x 10s being  shown. Only regret having passed on one of those which went for $150...would have been more that that if I continued bidding.  One 10 x 15 went for $200 and was probably a good price but big OLD furn and fridge and virtually no smalls which I personally prefer over lifting and moving the big items !  ;D

Here's a related matter regarding listing announcements:

When signed in to your account click on my "myebay" near top right corner of screen and scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen. Once you get there you MIGHT see something like the picture just below.

What interests me the most about this project is precisely approaching consumption through the view of storage and accumulation.  I want to find people who own a locker and do portraits of them with their belongings.

Any suggestion on how is the best way to 'reach' these potential subjects?  Is there a way to reach a group of them?

This is the toughest part of your project. I guess you could go to  storage facilities (in a major city, NY, Chicago, LA) and talk to managers to see if they would give some of their customers your name and number to call.  There are bound to be some who would like to show off their mounds of stuff and be photographed among it.

These folks probably aren't the kinds of "hoarders" seen in a couple of popular tv shows, but maybe just a step or two below that.

I doubt there is a forum (or section of one) dedicated to the proposition "I buy and store a lot of stuff".

Good luck with your project, and when published just post here and I'll give you my shipping address so I can add your book to MY collection of stuff.

Quote from: Tinchohs

(1) Generally speaking, what do people tend to store in the rented lockers?

Usually normal household items including home decor and personal collections.

Is it 'stuff' they no longer use and don't know what to do with it?

Sometimes, yes.

Is it precious items that are safer in this place than in their own homes?

Sometimes, but that is probably not why they store it there.

How would you characterize the items generally found in the lockers (not only the abandoned ones)?

Sometimes, mostly sellable, sometimes, 10% sellable, mostly about 70% sellable.

(2) From the little I've seen through the TV shows, it would seem that most of the abandoned lockers have junk that no one really cared for.  If that is generally true, why would someone pay for a space to store it and instead of simply giving it away or discarding it?

(1) They think it has value and maybe someday they or someone they know will use it again. (2) They are not too bright.

(3) If or when it is valuable stuff that they've stored, when they abandon the space, is it driven by a tough financial situation that prevents them from continuing to pay for the locker?

People don't pay up for the following reasons and there are undoubtedly more reasons as well. (1) no money to pay for it. (2) don't think the stuff is worth paying for. (3) Divorce, jail, death. (4) Forgot (3 months in a row !

If that is the case, do you tend to frequently find personal items such as photo albums, kid portraits, school artwork etc?

Yes, yes, yes and yes.

Read the legal notices in every area paper you can lay your hands on. Read them every day for two months. I guarantee this will get you answers.

Call your local (area) storage facilities and ask them when their next auction is. Go to it. Get a list of auctions from the auctioneer.

The Lounge / Re: looking for a low priced laptop

looking for a low priced laptop for my daughter for college.

Your best bet (IMO) is your local area Craigslist. Meet at a McDonalds for safety and security of the money you bring with you, and you can also try the free wifi connection on the unit you might buy.

eBay is good too, but there is nothing like trying it in person.

Also, you can buy a low end one (NEW) from Office Depot, etc for $250 to $300 and they have a good return policy and locations near and far.

I bet it goes for way high price Cause I'm going to bid 600 out the gate and bidders will take it to 800 to 900  due to people hate to loose and they love to over pay for these units for some reason

Waiting for you to place your $600 bid as it is currently at $9.99 at (3:15 pm on 8/9/2012).   ;D

Zeeann....

I am sending a message to our administrator and asking that he move your post and my reply to a NEW thread in the Storage Auction Stories section, as your story deserves its own space and not an offshoot of this one.  If this happens, I'll then modify my post and give you my thoughts on the urn your bought.

Episode #2

Barry arrives in a new (small) ride.

Brandy rolls eyes as Jarrod goes for broke, but Barry gets it at $2300…$1700 too much in my book. (end tally said he lost $1400)

Evaluations are off the wall tonight…two samplers worth $1K…come on Darrel. (he got the lkr for $220).

Barry’s lkr is a big loser by around $2K or so. Good thing the producers paid him $10K to buy it. He did get an antique horse racing gizmo…expert says….$600.

Darrel looks at his sampler unit…value…$(they never said....guess it was less than he thought).   Map of Transylvania…value $1K .

Yuup….lkr I would have paid $250 for…He claims around $3K plus in value.

Episode #1:

Barry's big find is for the birds.

Yuuup!  Scores some electronics. (value in Dave's world... $16K).

The couple takes stuff back to the store and find....GOOD  jewelry.  Gotta be a plant....nope, counterfeit ! And some hamburger icons:

The "expert" said the one pictured might be worth a couple of hundred. Selling on eBay for $19.95...go figure !

Darrel and son....drive away empty.
