Redundant thought, but yeah, the facilities have figured out the people with disposable income (money to burn) go to Saturday auctions. No auctions this week (local area), but 3 on Saturday!

197
Not all facilities do this but the one thing I would change is to make all auctions cash only on the spot. No credit cards, no debit cards, & no letting people go to the ATM to get more money on a unit they bid on. I also would like to see units re-auctioned on the spot or that day whenever some yocal bids up a unit & doesn't have the money to pay for it.

South East / Re: Info needed on ATANTA GA. auctions, swaps etc.

Can't give you too much info cause then you might be competition! Seriously though, Atlanta is a big-time storage auction market. There are at least 5 mega-whales, & at least 20-25 other regulars that can put a Hurtin' on you. The good news is there is almost always multiple auctions going on everyday (except Sunday) in the Atlanta metro area. It tends to spread the whales out but many of them will show up at the same auctions if its known to be a good facility or caravan. Good units can be found just about everywhere. The big timers don't let great units go cheap if they give them up at all!

Good Luck!

Alright now...there will be no DILF hunting here.

Yeah, exactly. Like, do you bring the kids with you to your garage sales/flea market and if so how do you keep them occupied? Do you have any issues with bringing them to auctions? Do you primarily stay at home and sell on Craigslist and eBay, etc?

Well it's summer so the kids are with us most of the time. I've seen some people on this forum have kids that are interested in the auction/re-sell business, but ours are not. Can't get them interested much at all. It's pure misery for them, no matter if it's at the auctions, cleaning out units, selling at flea markets, selling at the store, etc. they hate it all!

The only thing that partially motivates them to be involved & help is when we find something in the units they want. We pretty much quit just giving them stuff and now have them work for the items they want.

You know, I thought about that when I was writing the post above. Fair enough, dads, you're included too....how do you do it?

Uhh, it's a not much different then someone with a regular job. Do you specifically mean parents (moms or dads) who have kids to young to be in school or childcare?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #6...June, 2013

I know it's only the second day of June, but actions in my local area look to be sparse to non-existent the next two weeks. I might go out of town next week to look for some auctions. Right now I am working an estate on commission and have another possibly lined up for next week, so looks like for now I am running estate sales instead of doing storage auctions. Also am getting more people bringing me stuff to sell. Bought an over-painted dresser from a guy for $10 (I bought some other stuff he brought over too). Underneath all that paint is a Mengel Mid Century Modern dresser. Look em up.

Yea, it happens from time to time. I go to auctions in three different states with different auction laws. In one state the facility doesn't even have to hold an auction, so I laugh whenever a facility is having an auction in this state and they actually bid on their own units (to win). Then again how do you pay yourself the winning bid amount? It's just a waste of time for everybody. The facility for running the ad and taking the time and money to do it, then actually bidding on their own units; and all the auction attendees who came out thinking it was a fair public auction.

O.K. ladies and germs,

The Good News, crowds are waaayyy down for the last week of May! Yeah!!!   8)

The Bad News, very nice units are still being bid up too high!  :'(

At least the garbage units are starting to go for what they should. Lets keep our fingers crossed, I think I here the Fat Lady singing for the TV Show inspired storage auction madness!

Man, you just gotta focus on the parts of the business that work for you and bring you the best yields. There are sooo many different ways to focus and run your re-sale business you just gotta find what's right for you.

One piece of advice. Stop thinking everything is gonna come easy! Your warehouse is off-line, off-road, and you were open 3 times and the results were less then stellar. That's pretty typical. It's like you planted apple seeds a month ago and you are yelling "Where's my apples bytch!" It takes time to build a store, indoor yard sale, warehouse, etc. Your gonna have to advertise hard!

I usually handle everything myself...however on those occasions when I need help,I just call a guy that I met a few years ago..he's a Director of  a Halfway house...most of the residents have struggled with alcohol and are trying to get there lives back together... and all are at least a few months clean & sober... these guys are broke, so appreciative of a little cash, actually love the exercise that's involved and are determined to do the moving, lifting, clean up perfectly and very quickly. It breaks up the tedium of the structured environment they're living in & obviously they want to be asked back again.. I've had nothing but the best experiences with these guys, everybody wins.

Great advice, think i'll give this a try.

I LOVE IT when newbies pull the old "I let you have that one, so remember me on the next one Bull!" What next one? Ain't nobody owe you any respect! You didn't "let" anyone win a unit, you quit bidding! LOL! Anyway, you might not even be around for the NEXT one.  :-*

Don't know how large your auction crowd is, but around here, if the door goes up on an exceptional unit, there is NOOO WAAAY a newbie is going to win it. The 'DAWGS' will run ALL the money out of it before a newbie wins! Better bring your check book and credit cards and car title if you think you are going to win an obvious "jackpot" unit only a week on the scene.  :)

Sounds like you are already treasure hunting, that's cool if that's what you want to do. Just know and I will jump off from what Movieman said about most units being bad. I will say most units aren't bad, but bread & butter, work-a-day, ho-hum, flea market vendor units. 90% of the regulars work these units just so every once and a while they can hit a "jackpot" unit. Understand these guys who have been doing it for 10-15 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, over many years are not going to let you walk up with a wad of cash and grab a great unit, no matter how high you bid.

Good Luck!

Alright, here are the photos. The headboard wasn't in the unit, only the foot board, but perhaps you can do something creative with it. If you're interested, just make me an offer. Sorry about the photos, I must not have sized them correctly. It's a 2 piece armoire, dresser, 2 night stands and footboard.

The truly sad thing is, that would be a STELLAR unit in my area!  :'( :'( :'(

90% of the time I move everything myself, including furniture & appliances. The only thing I tend to need help with are those huge China hutches with all the glass panes. Generally everything else I can man-handle myself. I do have a couple of guys on call for larger units though. I can empty a loaded 10 x 10 in an hour. I love the 100 degree heat! The only kind of weather that actually seems to keep people away from auctions and bidding. Tornadoes & Blizzards? No problem! 100 degree heat? We ain't messin' with those unit!

Nice! Congrats on your find! But there should be a disclaimer.. Results not typical.. I'm all about the $5 units! If you can't make money on a $5 unit, than you should just go flip burgers.

I've lost money on a $5 unit before :'(

I knew a guy once, very smart MBA, successful, then he lost his job, and then lost another job, then lost his house and most possessions, this guy was 45 and never lost at anything in his life! Not long after he started falling for every get quick scheme in the book. I would try to talk sense into him but he would only remind me of his prep school, cum laude, MBA, corporate experience and I didn't understand the complexities of these investments. Total train wreck and I had to walk away. So yeah, desperate people, even educated and experienced can fall for this crap, so imagine people on the bottom half of the bell curve.
