Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #7...July, 2012

All of the rifle butts have also been up front near the door in easy sight.  Plants maybe???

Every rifle or pistol I have found has been either along the back wall or AT LEAST (in the case of pistols) inside a box, sometimes along with a cleaning kit, etc.

Foolish to put them in there at all of course, but I guess those frm owners didn't consider they might lose their lkrs.

IMO any rifle (loose or in a gun case) that is up front (or even up high) and SHOWING very well could be a plant. It wouldn't take much for a manager (or a lkr owner looking to score on an overage payment) to do a setup like that.

Same thing with guitar cases and guitars.  I once bought a lkr showing a nice nylon guitar case near the front and the end of one showing (out of the case) in another spot further back. turned out the case was empty and the guitar fit in it perfectly. I have since stopped going to that place and I hear other stories of what appear to be setups by the manager. This guy has been there for years, unlike a lot of them who last about 2 years tops.

A few days ago one of the 4 major auctioneers in my area had five facilities scheduled and they were scattered over about a 30 mile radius.

I only went to #3 and bailed on all the rest...too hot and just not interested.  I later heard that at the #4 place a large locker was opened revealed A LOT of boxes and up front there were 3 rifles showing. None of the people I talked too could identify them by model, etc.

Anyway the auctioneer pulled them from the auction and away the bidding went with a few people thinking "there might be a pistol in there".

Newbie got the lkr for $900 and.....boxes were NOTHING but PAPERWORK!   Gotta love the irony in that one. What a way to learn a lesson.

Bye, Bye Newbie !

Now my one 7 facility location is starting to get a little greedy.  A few times now he has "rejected" $50 opening bids on small units that before would go for $300 or more.  Granted it normally goes for $150 or so and the $50 is just to get things rolling.  So I don't know if this guy don't want to waste time, trying to get more money, or what.

Sounds to me like he got spoiled by the past year or so of higher bids and hasn't thought it through. If no one bids greater than the $50 he rejected he might REALLY regret it, but I would guess most buyers would fold and come in at $100 or so to get it rolling. Still, if they used to go for $300 Plus, he can't be too happy with maybe $100 less than that.

Guess if that is the case he will have to deal with IT the way we have dealt with higher prices in the past.  If they don't sell I wonder how he'll feel about holding on to them for another month or two.

So all day I spent $35 on some stuff. sure I got $300 for the Air Jordan's(luck) and will get about $250 out of the rest. Why can't i seem to pull the trigger on bigger fuller lockers? I'm not scared or shy. Maybe cheap but I understand (to make $ it take $) but I just haven't yet. :( The end for now)

You've got about $500 in profit. Take a shot at a bigger buy and see what happens. Could be good, could be even, could be bad. Of course use good judgement in that (or those) buys.

Having chosen storage auctions for that journey you have made the right choice. You will find more junk than treasures. Whether you buy it or not will be part of the journey too.

Can't imagine the shipping on 500 books.....

Well, that's why media mail was invented, or maybe someone (even a member here) would be willing to make a 2,000 mile road trip to get them...after all, some are worth $100 !  ;)

I know this thread is OLD, but it seemed like the right one to post this note:

I watched five minutes of this show for the first time on Sunday, July 29, 2012.

How has it lasted THIS long.....?

It is SOoooooo  BAD.  Sometimes I can watch something bad just to ridicule it, but this one is such a waste of time I can't even do that.

Sure! I'll take ***any*** dealer service manual for 2 bucks each. As a matter of fact, I'll offer 5 bucks each for any anybody has. If they are complete. Dirt and greese is managable but they do have to be complete.

There you go Alias...an offer of 5 bucks each; I don't know how many you would have in 77 totes, but that adds up to some serious money no matter what. Now shipping could be a problem.

It would help if I knew exactly which ones were worth $100 and who would buy them.

Sell them all to StorMe at $2.00 each.

The old timers still seem to be gradually fading away. The crowd this week was generally less then 6 old timers (pre-tv shows), maybe 1-2 since tv shows, a dozen or less that are 3 month newbies, and all others are fresh faces. There really are no 3 month to 12 month "veterans" that I can think of that are buying units at all.

Will it ever end ?

It's not an act of collusion, it's an act of protest.

col·lu·sion (k-lzhn)
n.
A secret agreement between two or more parties for a fraudulent, illegal, or deceitful purpose.

Damn, the other four guys and I fit that definition to a "T".

1) two or more parties....there were five of us.
2) deceitful purpose....you bet

The fact is we "colluded" through "brain wave transfer" OK, it coverted to speech...to hold the prices to $10 each....and it worked.

Yes, I am a sinner and maybe even a felon.

However, there is a bigger "crime" here.  The facility manager was dumber than a stump. He could have called the auction off, not accepted such low bids, etc. Chances are one of the five of us would have folded but not to any large degree. Stupid does as stupid is.

1977
Okay you solve this by talking with the other buyers and all agreeing that no one bids on them. Once that happens, the minimum bid policy by the property manager goes out the window.

Watch out Alloro !  The "collusion" fans will be all over that statement !

That said there is this to consider:

Depending on the crowd there will be people who won't buy into it and they WILL spring for the minimum being asked.

AND THAT SAID....

Some years ago only 5 of us showed up  at a place that rarely had auctions (or crowds).  Through MENTAL TELEPATHY we each decided that $10 would be our maximum bids for the 5 lockers up for auction. Miracle of miracles, we each got a locker for $10 having "mentally" decided who would go for #1, #2, etc. (sight unseen).  Ain't science wonderful.

Someone should put a poll up to see if any of the member here care of what happeing on the show  or if we should even  talk about the show here.

Go ahead and put up a poll. You're the perfect one to do so as your dislike of the show is more than apparent.
PLEASE, give some thought to the choices you make for us to choose from.

Very nice teacher.  I've learned also to start to use odd cents.  I've lost an auction last month by $.30.  Sounds like a really nice unit you snagged.  Have fun sorting.

We used to have ONE facility that did silent bidding, but they are NOW using Doston's outfit.  >:(

Even when silent there was no splitting a dollar bill with a "cents" measurement. Had to be in even dollar amounts.

As far as winning or losing by .25 cents or $25 I never cared much about that. If I did a silent bid of $400 and got it I didn't really care if the next highest bid was only $225. I made the bid because I thought it was fair for what I could expect in the way of a return on the investment, and sure if I had bid $250 and gotten it I would have made more profit, but that's part of the process. I was sure to get it at the $400 and I still made money.

I think it's like any other bid process really ..... if you know the other bidders around you.  A bunch of newbies always throw a monkey wrench in things if they have more money than sense.

eBay / Re: Seller update on fleabay
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:07:34 AM »
I don't mind the one day shipping so much, but the idea that someone can use the item for two weeks and the send it back bothers me a lot.

I believe the opportunity will be used a lot by some buyers, and there will be no recourse. eBay will side with them no matter what.

Who needs two weeks to decide if they like something enough to keep it?

What about a $400 tool someone only needs for one project?  Buy it, use it, send it back.

Need to convert 500 old 35mm slides to digital format? Buy it, use it, send it back.

Like that little black cocktail dress? Party coming up?  Buy it, use it, send it back.

Anyway, that's my take.
