Craigslist / Re: Are CL buyers really nuts or what?
« on: July 15, 2012, 11:02:27 PM »

Posted this in the wrong thread earlier so apologize for the "double".

********

Got a phone call about 9 pm (which I always think is odd for a business call) and guy wants to know if I still have a particular item. It's hard to find, but not valuable (I was asking $30) and he said he lived in "x" city and wanted to know when he could come over to look at it.

Well "x" is 109 miles from me in "y" and beforeI  looked it up after the phone call I had told him it was a good 90 miles one way. His response..."Well, if you haven't sold it by next Saturday, I'm interested."  Imagine a 218 mile round trip at say 20 mpg, that's 11 gallons or so, at $3.55 a gallon here in CA and you come up with about $40 in gas, NOT TO MENTION the roughly 3 to 4 hours of driving....in my book this qualifies this buyer as a total idiot.

Update:  July 15,2012

Have had good luck the last 4 weeks with Clist ads. Sold several big items from the big lkr I got in early May.

HOWEVER, the weirdos continue to be a sometime problem.

I will reply to post for you. Who cares.

Well, the advertisers care. The people who watch might care. The buyers at the auction care (whether the show continues to be a success or less of a success)....so I would guess there are a few who care.

Oh, I forgot the  260 hits the post had before you asked "who cares".

Whether or not you or I or anyone believes in the truthfulness of the show is a moot point here...it's a matter of the continued popularity of  the show and any implications that might have for many people.

EDIT: OH God I am turning into Movieman.... LOL    ;)

Well, there are worse things you could become. You could be running that multi-million dollar storage facility and thrift store combination in Tennessee.  ;D

.....still confused why people would be star struck.   ???
Tho I don't understand being star struck by actual "stars".

That's hard for me to understand too...star struck.

Hard for me to understand the mere "fascination" with star's lives as well. Even network "news" casts seem to feel they need to show the latest traffic mishap, 911 call about paparazzi tailing someone, etc.  Magazines like People (and many lesser ones) owe their existence to the stars and models.  Oh, well. To each his own.

I'm not movieman with records and awesome memory.....    ::)

The records you could work on...the awesome memory is a gift.

Vintage hand vice picked for $3, sold few days later for $60.

That vintage hand VICE is the kind they used to think would make you blind.
OTHERWISE, it's probably a vintage hand VISE...

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Kids at Auctions
« on: July 12, 2012, 03:38:27 PM »
Any one els fed up with people bringing their kids to the auctions?  When we have a few min to look and determin what we want to bid before the auctioneer starts the bidding, there's no time for some oneS kid standing in front of a unit with mommys flashlight and looking to see what's in there.
Unless the auctioneer wants to wait until the kids get out of the way they should hold off on starting (and sometimes finishing) the bidding.
Rant over

Once you have a good relationship with an auctioneer just ask them to say something to the crowd in general about keeping kids away from the door. The auctioneer will generally comply as it is a common sense thing to do....unless you're a parent who just isn't with the program.

You will also hear here from buyers whose children help them spotting things and even some of whom's children place bids (not sure how legal that is, but it happens as long as a parent is along).

Age makes a difference for the most part (and maturity), but I know what you mean and sometimes I will ask a child (or the parent) "Is this little one bidding?"  They usually get the point but not always.

****

The corollary is the parent (ususally a lard-ass, lame-brained mom) who pushes the stroller in front of her and thus is taking up extra space in a "line-up" that goes past the door.  Typically, this mom is using a $1.00 flashlight and a bar-room vocabulary along with her trailer-park trash husband who is scratching with one hand while pulling a cigarette out from behind his ear with the other.  But that's another story.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: High End Funiture

eBay...local pickup.

If it truly is an item worth $15K at retail, people from nearby states would come pick it up for $7,500.

@movieman-
Maybe you should switch facilities.   Seems like your always b*tching about waiting for people that get lost finding you.....      lol.    ;D

Nope, it's 1 mile from my home and 1/4 block off the freeway exit. As a person goes down the ramp to the intersection, if they look to the right they can see the back wall and roofs of the facility. Make two right turns and they are at the gate.

Add to that the fact that I include a PICTURE MAP of the location and the only logical conclusion is that even though these people can look something up on Clist, they can't (or won't) READ.

And of course it's not all of them...only the STUPID ones are that memorable.  ::)

Made an appt yesterday to sell a $175 air conditioner to a guy. Told him to meet me at my storage unit a 123 "x" street and directions and map were in clist ad.

Fifteen minutes after the appointed time I'm getting ready to leave the site and he shows up..."Sorry, I went to 456 "y" street by mistake.  It wasn't a storage area with the same name as mine (not a chain) and it was 3 miles away.

Friggin' idiots are lucky they find their way to anywhere. BUT I can't complain about the color of his full tilt purchase money !   ;D

Jerry Rice #80 San Fransisco 49ers throwback jersey. Came out of $30 unit.

Hey Movieman, interested in the jersey, I'll make you a killer deal!  ;)

It would HAVE to be a killer deal as I would want to resell it !

*****

As to a good buy lately...it was a piece I bought by "picking"....paid $250 for this tool and sold it for $600.  Sorry, won't reveal what it was....readers here may not be competition at the auctions but they could be on eBay so I don't share info of that nature. Right now I am undercutting two competitors on an item on eBay so don't want to put myself in the position of BEING undercut.  ;D

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #7...July, 2012
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:16:11 AM »

The best one had a bright yellow Matco tool box about 4 feet wide 2 feet deep and 4 feet high. Maybe 10 drawers; a good looking tool box and aside from the yellow its most distinguishing feature was.....the black vinyl rails on the drawers were DUST COVERED.....BUT....there were two sets of disturbed dust on each grip...where you would put your left and right hands to open a wide drawer. Each drawer had this pattern.

The other notables in this locker were 3 hard case guitar cases, 3 amps, Fender and Marshall brands.

Go ahead and guess what this sold for...10 x 10 with a dismantled keyboard as well and maybe 6 totes.

OK, had some good guesses on this one's final sales price.  I told my two cronies there that I thought it would go for $2000. They thought not and they were right.  It went for $1,000.

Yes, six months ago it might have gone for $2k but not that day. One of my two cronies went to $600 on it and when it went for $1K he the told me that he thought I would jump in somewhere around there, but I was just afraid of it at that price. An empty tool box and 3 empty guitar cases wouldn't have been worth much....IF EMPTY.  Wasn't willing to gamble that much.

So, the smaller crowds and sporadically lower prices are a good indicator that things might be settling down.

The guy who paid $1K was known to my two friends but I had never seen him before...he was from out of town.

who cares money was green.  ;D

Yep, they do stretch the limits sometimes, one way or the other. Those back seats on some little cars may fold down and give you access through the trunk, but fitting a rectangular shape into an oval hole can be a problem.

More power to them though if they get it done....and the not helping is always a smart move imo for a number of reasons.

eBay / Average per item selling price on eBay
« on: July 10, 2012, 09:59:03 AM »
Inspired by a thread in another area (for per item price for flea market sales) I decided to look at my average price per sale data for eBay.You can find yours in your account tab, then look at sales reports. Another interesting area in the accounts tab is the seller dashboard.  Each of these areas require some exploring and clicking.

I sell mostly "bigger" items (tools, small appliances, collector items so that might account for my figures. I know some of you will list 200 plus pieces of clothing etc, but I only list about 10 per month and sometimes all will sell and sometimes only 2 or 3.

Edit:   eBay always lags a bit in their reporting. My June report when it comes up will include a $500 sale which would definitely affect the average price. I also should say that I SELL, not list about 10 per month on average. I might list 10 in the first week and end up relisting and adding new items as the month goes along, so I really probably list about 30 to 40 a month but typically never have more than about 10 on at any given time.
