Day 3 of our busy week.  Don and I split up....and no.....not because he made me wash all those truly disgusting clothes~

He went to day two of a local caravan.  I went to day one of another with a Phoenix auctioneer.  They hold these every other month and are generally busy, due to more units.

My auction started 40 minutes later than projected due to a large # at the first facility which is an hour or so north of us.  By the time the auctioneer arrived we were over 100 in attendance.  All units went way too high and frankly.......I didn't find any worth bidding on.

Don had about 10 people.  All regulars.  He picked up a 10X20 3/4 full for $250.  He is now on his way over to begin the clean out.  I am at home getting kids to do homework, showers and dinner.

He said there is a very nice sofa & loveseat, washer/dryer (we crank those out here), a really cool antique table, a cedar chest  and a very vintage 'locker'.  Oh please let there be more in there than the wheat penny from our 'write our own reality show' thread. :D
One of our 'regular' buddies told him he got the locker of the day.  I hope he was right!

Don promised he would not open a single box or 'dig' until I was able to 'help'.  Last decent unit he bought he found all the goodies and left me with the laundry.

Hopefully I get a call in the next half hour saying "You're not gonna believe this........"  but I'm just grateful we got a decent locker at a decent price.  Our tables (and craigslist account) were looking a bit bare.

I'll update later when I know more and/or we finish the clean-out tomorrow.  We are arranging it so we do that after attending the bigger facilities on day two of the one caravan.

During one of our auctions today there were supposed to be 2 units at this one facility.  When we got there the manager told a young man he had to leave the facility.  He said 'but I've got the money.'  She asked if it were the full amount and he said he had half.  She told him to leave, but he left his girlfriend there.

She then went to every hispanic bidder (she was Hispanic) in the parking lot asking them to pay off the debt, she would then take a couple personal items, including one firearm (there were supposedly several).  Well by this time the unit was tainted to say the least.  Next thing I know she entered the office and the auctioneer came out and said we're down to one unit and it's not the one everybody was 'talking about'.

I don't know if one of our own 'bailed' her out or not, but the last person she was seen talking with was our version of Dave Hester.  You know.....deep pockets and win at any and all cost.

Found it very strange and wondered if you've ever encountered anything like this?

Well all the lawn care tolls have been sold, but they still have everything else, so I'm really excited!
Thanks for all your advice, especially about the patio stuff. I would have passed it over, but now I'm pretty keen on it.
Also I wouldn't have even thought of picking up any of the dishware. You guys are great! I love this forum!

Hold on Shmoopy~I can't keep them in stock, but remember......I live in Southern Arizona where every other person has a pool and use them 9 outta 12 months.  And condition makes all the difference in the world.  I'm sure you'll shop wisely~

Well....got a unit.  Wish like heck we hadn't.  Crowds were pretty normal for around here.  About 45, 2/3 regulars.  prices stayed semi-reasonable too.  5 facility caravan with about 25 units total.

The one we bought had fishing gear, a compressor, some furniture and tools visible.  Don and I agreed on $200 MAX.  Well thought I had it at $150 then a yahoo came in at $175.  I went ahead and hit our $200.  The guy says $210 (increments were a steady $25 on this and most other units).  I walked away and my husband leans over towards the guy and said firmly $220.  He countered with $222.  I kid you not.  The auctioneer was PISSED.  She said "I don't play that game.  Any other REAL bids."  I think he realized he had just made an ass out of himself.  I almost wish she would have accepted it, as it looks like a break-even or even slight loss unit.  Most everything is either broken, incomplete or FILTHY!  Funny the cleanest and most resalable items are the baby clothes of which there is a lot.
Oh well.....we were (over) due for a loss.

Only one other unit of interest.  She opened it up and it was full of sports paraphernalia, including tons of Steelers (the auctioneer is a fan as is my husband) stuff.  I took it up to $700.  Ended up going for over $1100.

Tomorrow I hope is a better day with 3 different caravans going on.

ugh....I've got to go launder icky clothes.....

Oooo~could you pick up the patio table and chair set for me? 8)
$40?  I can't keep those things in stock!  Of course in Southern AZ we're always on the patio!

Sounds like a winner and have fun!!  Reminds me since locker prices are soaring, perhaps I should rethink my pickin'.

im probably going to pop my cherry and buy my first unit this thursday. the good thing is, i live in a upper middle class / lower high class neighborhood (houses range from 350k-1mil) and the first 2 auctions are right down the road :)

come to think of it, those are probably the only 2 ill attend, since the other 8 or so are in less than desirable sections of town that arent known for hoarding cool stuff.

some of the best units we've seen/bought have come from a rough area of town.  And likewise some of the trashiest in the 'better' areas.  Not always the case, but you really shouldn't judge a book and all......

Yep....2012 is off to a rip-snoring start.  3 facilities, 6 units, about 35 in attendance, with most being regulars.  I was not there, but Don reported that the trend of way overpauing, even by the regulars (myself last month included), continues.

We start day one of U-store-it tomorrow.  I've missed the last two auctions due to obligations.  Odds increase of getting a unit as I'm a bit more aggressive than Don.  It's paid off big once and with breaking even (maybe a little meat on the bone......we'll see) on another.

All we can do is keep on keepin' on.........

......Jarrod. He quickly hung up the phone. He decided to keep his new love to himself.  So he returned to his locker to look through the pile of musty smelling clothes and found.......

a deflated MALE blow up doll.  It was then that he realized his true love had been cheating on him.  He sat back as a single tear rolled down his cheek and realized that the male doll bore a striking resemblance to.........

Don went to a 'new' auction today.  It was from moving and 'storage' facility and we really didn't know what to expect.  Turns out that many of the units are items that the people who hired the movers didn't want.  All junk.  Only two regulars, Don and another couple.

Well we know not to waste our time with that one again.

Tomorrow I hope he lands a unit, if not.....Tues, Weds, Thurs are all lookin' good! 8)

edit to amend~there were about 60+ people, with only a couple 'regulars'.

so...he sold it to the producers of Storage Wars Texas (for $75) so they could include it in a locker of particle board furniture that was already broken down. Lesa "Bring It !"... took it to an art dealer who bought it from her for $10, 500 to put with his real Jackson Pollock work. After that he went back to the locker and found a crust of bread that looked like the image of.....

John Lennon.  But since he was only 22 years old, he didn't recognize it and simply swept it away,  But while searching the unit for a dust pan he tripped over a.....................

I will start the list:

Porn
Christmas ornaments
Dirty Laundry
Porn

You're slipping mb~how could you forget to add in drug paraphernalia?  I find that second only to porn.  Oh and strippers clothes.

Shmoopy~you'd be surprised how much you can make off brooms and shovels and the like.  Avoid vacuums and bread-makers.....can't give those away in my area.
Also mattress' are a tricky item.  I hate them and rarely buy units with them, unless they are in IMMACULATE shape.  Otherwise, I view them as a dump run item.

Think about it......would you want to buy a mattress that is from a unit with porn, drug paraphernalia, strippers clothing and porn??? :o

Flea Markets / Re: First weekend of the year

Well....we kept waffling about whether to go or not.  Decided that winter weather is too iffy and since we've been runnin' right about 70 degrees we ought to make the best of it.  Left a bit later than usual, couldn't get 'our' space and ended up in what turned out to be a not so good location.

Lots of people, but with our depleted inventory, bad location and late start......we had a crap day.
Oh well......still made a bit of money, but dang.....would have rather have been home soakin' up the sun and working on some projects.

We've got a busy week ahead.  I'm taking the girls to church, while Don will be hitting a new auction here.  Hopefully he lands a decent unit.  If not.......we have our mega-auction-week ahead.  We need to score at least one unit this week or we could be in some trouble as far as this business goes.  With a 3 caravan on Mon, large one on Tues, 3 separate caravans on Wed, another on Thurs.......we should score a locker. ***fingers crossed***

He went into the locker that he just bought for 450 dollars. Its more than he wanted to pay but the one thing caught his eye.It was.......................
.....those two totes marked "Rare Bennie Baby's"....and he knew that he'd hit the jackpot because he had heard from his co-worker  that they bring $5 each on FeeBay........

As he opened the first tote he realized his folly, as they were in fact Bennie Baby's and not the Beanie babies that had the market in a uproar.  He continued to dig through and found an old foot locker.  He broke the tiny diary style lock and opened it to discover.............

I have a hunch a lot of people came in from out of town thinking that because there were two caravans on the same day, which is rare, that the normal crowd would be split, which it was; but to many people from out of town had the same hypothesis and drove the crowd size out of sight.

Yep~with two of the caravans having Phoenix based auctioneers I expect to see some new faces down here as well.  Hopefully the 100+ mile drive keeps the majority of them up there.
