and...

Lookee here what I done saw....

a promo on SW original for SW Texas starting in March, 2012...season 2.  Yikes, season one went fast...don't know how many episodes it was, but didn't seem like more than 6 or so.

2nd half hour on the 24th of Jan, 2012.

How about this: It's about 380 miles from LA to SF, CA. That's a lot of gas!
They were in Santa Cruz and then in SF...would guess there was a night between the two auctions...motel bills.

MAYBE....If Darrell can truly sell $17K out of his $2K+ lkr...that's good money...now all he has to do is haul it back (a 10 x 30) to San Diego !

Jarrod and B like their tool box...wish he had mentioned the name of the wrench he had in his hand.

Jarrod and B get spy stuff in a locker...oh yeah...that happens AT LEAST once a year in my area.

Jarrod and B got a huge amount of new furn in the box...he rented 2 trucks to take it back the appx 400 miles to their store....trucks, drivers, gas...all adds up...thank goodness for TV celebrity.

Still a good thing they're being paid per episode and apparently a good sum ($10K by most estimates). Talent pays!

Promo for SW Texas...2ND SEASON...starts in March; yeehaw...can hardly wait.

Tuesday, Jan 24, 2012....

Dave finds about 6 pieces of rocks/minerals and says they're worth $700 to $800.

I sell those exact items; the amethyst piece would go for $20 at the most.
The lamp (shines through the rock)....$25 at the most.
Other pieces maybe $10 each (total of $40).....grand total $85...that's 1/10 of his estimate.

Barry opens his safe and finds......Nada ! (typical...90% of them are empty).

Barry has some wine tool he thinks will pay off...I bet it will...this is REALITY TV. Corker "worth" $700 or so.

Only in Santa Cruz, CA would Darrell find three surf boards ! The three of them worth:  $650.

****

A 2nd half hour coming up.

Hell, do what you want, but it seems to me you would be better served spending your time doing something productive.

I don't know MM, if he enjoys doing it what's the harm?  But I do agree it's pretty much a given that all the auction show participants get paid and there are some fake elements; it's the "setup" items that I enjoy calling out when I do a play-by-play on Storage Wars (original); I pretty much gave up reviewing the Texas version as it's just too comical for words !

As to the time involved in doing these posts, since I'm not buying as many lockers (and therefore not cleaning out as many) I've got to do something with my time (maybe this is the case for our Utah member as well).

I knew it! Now its public ...

Please cite your source. Thank you.

Edit:

Never mind; I just googled it. Here's one of the links and in it they quote THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER. I know I always go to them when I want the straight scoop (especially on aliens impregnating earth women)  ;) .

Guys this is reality TV - its entertainment.

Yes, it's reality TV, but it's not reality as anyone who has bought 10 or more lockers knows.

I won't deny the entertainment aspect though...it's hilarious....so is a road-runner cartoon.

You are doing fine, we went to about five different auctions and our 1st locker we got for $30. Had three cut locks in it. LOL Obviously kept saving it. then finally lost it. it was full of bags of clothes. We needed it for a yard sale of our personal stuff. We been moving slowly but surly. Keep going you learn a lot.  :D

And for anyone who hasn't gotten this info in other threads....seeing 3 cut locks tells you they saved the lkr two times and ALSO had those times to get in there and take out any things of value. It has to look pretty good to me to take a chance on it when I see 3 cut locks (or even two). On the other hand if you get it cheap and get some quantity it could still pay off one way or the other.

Hi everybody!!  I am in the East SF Bay.  I buy at storage auctions 3-4 a year, estate sales and lurk the local thrift stores.  I am hoping to talk "treasure" with others in my area and across the forum also.   :)

Welcome....there are some bay area lurkers here...hardly ever post; go ahead and let us know what your last auction was like...attendance, prices, etc.

Any news on the future of Storage Wars Texas?

I don't think there's been a new episode on since late Dec, 2011 unless I missed it and I direct my Tuesday night to watch Storage Wars (original) and whatever else pops up there.

Hard to believe they would have made only 4 or so episodes....usually would go for 10 to 13 I think, but things have changed in the TV business with all the hundreds of channels available.

SW Texas demise would be a sweet surprise...I doubt the original will go away anytime soon.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: For the newbies
« on: January 24, 2012, 07:52:52 AM »
How has the TV shows over the past year to two years affected your profitability? Have you been able to adjust to the larger crowds? Do you have a lot of newbies winning most of the units in your area by overpaying? Just curious. Most of the vets in my area are struggling, some have dropped out, most seem to be trying to find other outlets for inventory like yard sales, auction houses, and wholesale auctions. I have the impression that none of these other outlets are anywhere near as profitable as the storage auctions were before the general public became aware of them.

1) Shows have affected profits. A unit you could buy for $300 and make $700 profit now sells for $1,000
and you hope for $200 to $500 profit.

2) Adjust to the crowds? Sometimes I don't even go to an auction if I feel the auctioneer will attract 100 + people.

3) Struggling? Yes, and adapting to new conditions but doing as you said...more single item buying, and looking
at bulk buying from other venues.

4) Yes, the other venues are not as profitable as the "old" locker business, but if you can buy enough single
items in the $10 area (each) and sell them for 5 to 10x that price you can do well, but finding ENOUGH
single items to do well is a reach. Right now for me it is a supplement to getting the occasional good lkr.

Lance…

Below is a link from a “Dave Hester” thread from May, 2011

http://storageauctionforums.com//index.php?action=profile;u=884;sa=showPosts;start=15

In this post the sections below which are in BLUE are from you. The sections in RED are from me.

I will only speak for the auctions that have been filmed at my stores, bc i have been there for every second. The units are real. There are 47 state laws we as storage owners have to live within and breaking the laws has substantial liability. I would never risk my core business or subject my investors to liability for a few hits on our website.

Those of you on this site that are Pros know that the Tenant can come in and pay for the unit up until the auction has started. We (storage outlet) and any operator following CA law have taken possession of the property between the time we cut the lock and take the inventory (state law) (all done video camera and a witness).

Now lets get to the conspiracy theories I keep hearing. I have the key to the door and a seal on the auction unit and I am going to give it to (OP) and let them into the unit before the auction so they can stack gold bars in there to make it interesting? ...lest go down that path and say I do? what happens when the tenant sees their unit on tv and says wow "I had gold bars in my unit" maybe I should get an attorney? Or if OP put the Gold Bars in there and the tenant came and paid the bill just before the auction starts? Demands control of the unit - which they would get. Do we sneak in in front of 200 people and get the Gold Bars? BTW im using "Gold Bars" substitute anything you want.

If you have any questions I will try to answer...
SW is now starting to film in other markets

In the eight years I have been buying lockers (almost 400 bought so far) I have seen a lot of goods come and go.
I have seen honest facilities and dishonest facilities.

While I understand what you have said in regard to your experience with the Storage Wars filming group, I would like to ask you a question which I FEEL can be answered with a YES or NO and I hope you will do that.  I also understand that either a YES or NO answer would need some further explanation, and that will be great to. Here is my question:

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT AFTER A LOCKER IS PURCHASED by one of the SW buyers that the show producers COULD THEN put a FANTASTIC item inside the locker for the buyer to later "find"?  Please remember, answer YES or NO first, then explain your answer.

Lance,

Acman lives in Michigan, I attend auctions in Tennessee, Georgia, & Alabama. Where I attend auctions, 90% of units have clothes in them. 40%-50% of them have more clothes in them then any one person can sell in a month. I am interested to know what parts of the country have storage units with very small amounts of clothing in them. I guess if soemone was a "cherry picker" and a professional hobbyist they can avoid units with a lot of clothing, but for the professional/consisent buyer I believe they are going to get a lot of clothing from buying storage units.

I agree with Cobia and in just the last few days I have heard the same thing from long-term, regular buyers in central California where I buy and sell.

It is not at all uncommon to see black plastic bags of clothes, towels, small kitchen, bathroom rugs, etc. I'm sure this is the case too in southern California where you are and probably is evident in the 250K of film rolls that never make it to the TV screen on Storage Wars.

Yesterday I saw someone pay $350 for 6 boxes and 3 nice looking suitcases that IN MY OPINION probably contained clothing. Even if it was good clothing that is a push for making any profit.

There is no doubt in my mind (and anyone who is half-way honest would admit this too) that the TV shows have skewed the prices so much in the way they portray this business that they are literally costing everyone (old and new alike) money.  The people making consistently good money today are the FACILITIES and the AUCTIONEERS.

Also, see my next post in this thread about how it is still possible for the OP production company to "salt" the units shown on Storage Wars and Storage Wars Texas. Yes, I know you can't speak for the Texas end.

I've yet to find a safe, but with my crowds......

And you may not find one for quite a while, but when you do, you can bet it not have anything in it of value to you.

I think I've gotten maybe 10 over the years and 3 of them DID yield value, but I consider that ratio high...I would guess it's really more like 1 in 50 or so will even have a safe, and when they do it's probably 1 in 50 of those that do that have value...I just lucked out...or my ratio thoughts are off.  Search for "safes" here in the threads and you'll find a fair number of stories and pictures.

That is great MovieMan that you got some stuff.

Yep, I just decided to go for a few even though 2 of them were marginal. Two of the 4 5 x 10s I got were only about 1/4 full, the third one 1/2 full and the fourth one full...the two smallest ones I cleaned out right away.

On a side note the weather here was blustery yesterday afternoon and the forecast for Friday night into Saturday morn was for 1" to 2" of rain and winds to 25 mph throughout the night. I decided then I would not sell on Saturday and they also predicted showers from 6 a.m. to noon.

Well, I awoke at 12:30 Sat morn to find only sprinkles, no wind and there was no 1" or more of rain that fell from when I went to bed at 9 p.m. Friday. I went back to bed slightly ticked at weather.com but was committed to working on my other two lkrs Saturday and just shopping at whatever sellers decided to brave the weather or not believe the forecasters.

As I write this at 5 a.m. Saturday it is lightly sprinkling and no wind, so my decision may have been justified after all. I was thinking it would be nice to take a break from selling (last six Saturdays were sunny after 6 a.m. 35 to 40 degrees). So anyway, best laid plans? Maybe, maybe not.

More auctions next week !  ;D
