Couldn't have been me, only 3 of the 5 units I bought were junk.  :)

Well, excuuuuuuse me !  My hobby is waiting for your reaction to my posts...talk about needing something to do. Aren't there any electrical contracts floating around your area to take care of?  It's a toss-up on which of us needs a "life"....Cobia is a distant third !   ;D

Hey, wait a minute! How'd I get dragged into this! I already have TWO lives thank you very much!  :P

Today at the flea market, I was able to save $65 worth of sales thanks to my mobile payment gateway. Another thing you'll want to consider, if you're meeting people for sales ala craigslist, is the safety of accepting credit cards. You carry no cash, people have no reason for funny business. One time, I sold a modem on craigslist for $40. The guy brought $80 in the form of 1 $50 bill 1 $20 bill and 1 $10 bill. He said "I got $50 if you got change, or $30 if you don't." I took the $30 because I had no change. This was before the invention of mobile payment gateways. Or at least before they were widely available.

Oldest scam in the book. Knowing the price of an item they are coming to be and then being inexplicably short, or needing to break a large bill. I don't play that no more, happens to often. I always have change to break anything up and if they pull the I brought $10, $20, $50 too little game; I tell them where the nearest ATM machine is. Most of the time they just run to the ATM but sometimes they luckily "find" that extra money in the car. Wow! what a coincidence.  ::)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: The room from hell!

I've been tearing insulation down and carpet off the walls/ceiling for parts of 2 days now. Once I saw that a good portion of the wood frame that this band installed was drilled directly into the facilities structure, I decided to stop and let the facility decide how to proceed. I am not taking responsibility for someone else's damage.

Has anybody encountered anything like this in their adventures?

Whoa buddy! You never should have touched it in the first place. That was an either an approved or unapproved renovation to the storage facility and legally the facilities property. All you bought was the contents inside the unit, not what he/she glued/nailed to the walls & ceiling! If they are dicks they could request you complete the job or worse require you to pay for the repairs or return the unit to it's original condition.

Every now and then, you'll come across merchandise that technically should be turned into the police. But is it worth the risk of having your merchandise seized? Here are a couple of hypotheticals.

Let's say you find a really nice computer but you also find the previous owner's kiddie porn collection. Do you wipe the computer clean and resell it or do you turn it in to the police for evidence and inevitably lose your property?

Another example - Firearms - legally, your supposed to turn them in to the authorities when you find them in a storage unit. If they come back clean, they're supposed to give them back to you assuming you can legally own a firearm. But if the firearm has been reported stolen or used in a crime, they'll keep it and you lose the profit from the sale of that firearm. Worth the risk?

Travis, I think we've beat this camel to death a number of times on various threads....

Hypothetical question: What if the owner of the online forum you belong to is a snitch for the FBI? Would you keep posting comments that might cause an investigation?  :-\

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #4...April, 2013
« on: April 26, 2013, 09:08:57 PM »
Went to one of three auctions today and skipping the first two didn't cost me anything...guys said they were bad.

Third place had 3, but it's a good area so worth going to.  Only about 20 people there...surprise ! Only problem was 8 of us were willing to pay $1000 for a good locker.

First one went for $800 to a regular.  Second one similar...to a regular.  Third one went to a newbie for $700. The contents on all three were (IMO) close to what the people paid for them, but there may have been surprises to make some profit on.

When the mortgage forclosures happened a couple of years ago I got one here for $875 but EVERYTHING showing was $ signs waiting to be cashed in. That locker had air-conditioning units (2) Iron fence sections (many) Outside lighting power distributors (all stainless steel), Rollaway tool box (with good tools), built-in appliances the property owner took out before the bank took over, etc, etc.  I think I cleared $2400 on that one.  Now it would have gone for $2400 to start !

Movieman, haven't you figured it out by now, you have to buy it for $2400 this month otherwise you will just have to pay $2500 next month or $2700 in three months, it's inflation man!

eBay / Re: Selling jeans internationally
« on: April 26, 2013, 09:05:21 PM »

I was super excited when I saw this program roll out. Selling internationally opens itup to a whole new set of buyers and certain items sell bettter outside the US than in. My biggest reason not wanting to sell outside the US is people get mad about customs holding packages toolongwhich is out of our control as a seller but they still hold us responsible. I like with this program how once we ship it to ebay its their problem.

Unfortunately my product category isn't eligible for this program :'(

Luckily, storage auction junk is  :)

Absolutely not, never in a million years. There are two things in this world that I hate doing. One is painting, the second is writing.

I can tell how much you hate writing by how INactive you are in this forum.  ::)

Shouldn't you be out buying storage units? Your never going to catch Movieman anyway!  :P

eBay / Re: Selling jeans internationally

ebay has a new program called ebay global, not sure if you have to be invited or if its open to everyone but basically you ship your product to an ebay sorting facility and ebay ships the item internationally for you. basically once you get the package in ebays hand which is a domestic shipment they take care of the rest and all the libalility.

sounds like  a really interesting program, i was psyched ot try it out however unfortunately they dont allow my ebay category in the program.

Ive used it and it works great! The buyer pays for the shipping (& all the other customs requirements) and I just pay to ship it to the distribution center in Kentucky.

eBay / Re: eBay has a sense of humor !

You may or may not have gotten this email from eBay...depends on your level of activity, etc.

Look at the number of free ads they offered me. It would take many 24 hour days of work to post that many unless they were the "similar" kinds items and still one could "never" do it.   What are they thinking ?

Especially since you have so many more important things to do like starting topics, & posting comments on this forum!  :D :D :D

My guess is, this guy thinks I'm new and is trying to run me off.. When I first came back, I asked one of my old buddies who he was and he told me a little of his back story. When I described this person, Tom, to my friend; I described him as a "redneck Willy Wonka".. all in fun, I am a comedian after all :) I'm thinking that got back to Tom and now he's got it out for me.

:D :D "Redneck Willy Wonka!" LOL!  :D :D Trying to imagine what that even looks like! Are we talking Gene Wilder Willy Wonka or Johnny Depp Willy Wonka?

About the trying to run you off thing, yea just part of the game, but people still gotta watch thier attitude and thier mouths at the auctions. I have befriended quite a few people in my local auction scene and the opinion seems to be about the same newbie, new regular, or old-timer. Most everyone wishes all the OTHER people would drop out, most everyone wishes the OTHER bidders would stop running the prices up, most everyone wishes THEY could win ALL the units they can handle per auction or per month and only pay the bare minimum of what they are willing to pay, most everyone wishes the OTHER people would back off and let THEM win, etc, etc.

That was a common gag/dare at house parties back in my day, before there even was a YouTube. People fell for it then and people fall for it now. Next video should be "I dare you/(bet you can't) to chug/drink a gallon of milk in one sitting."

Travis,

There is no way to tell for sure without some very intensive quanitative analysis and logirithimic formula computations.

It would be easier to determine the correct answer if the inventory was always the same. For instance, Say every 10x30 unit had 10 washers, 25 vacuum cleaners & 200 DVDs & every 10x10 unit had 2 washers, 20 vacuum cleaners & 100 DVDs then it would be pretty easy to track the data on how much you sell each of the three items for and how long each item takes to sell.

The problem is each large packed unit is different and each small lightly packed unit is different. Different inventory, different quality, etc.

You could end up buying one large 10x30, take a month to sell it and make $2500.
Next month buy 4 10x10, take a month to sell them and make $4000, and then concluded buying the smaller units is better!
But, you could just as likely buy one large 10x30, take a month to sell it and make $4000.
And the next month buy 4 10x10, take a month to sell them and make $2500.

It seems like the issue is limited space so the supposition is if I have 10x20 space for buying storage units it's better for me to buy 10x10 or smaller units, move them out quicker and not have all my space taken up by one 10x20 unit.

A couple of  thoughts. Isn't inventory just inventory no matter how much space it takes up? So is it more cost effective to continue driving back and forth to auctions and storage facilities to buy and clean out smaller storage units instead of having that one large unit taking up my space?

Generally, the quality of  a unit tends to be the same through out. Do I risk not buying a good quality 10x20 or 10x30, just so I can take some wacks at some good, fair, or poor quality 5x10 & 10x10 just because I can move them quicker?

I couple of questions HomeGrown,

Is he a seasoned vet and are you a relative newbie? or are you more a regular and he a newbie? It seems like with a childish response like 825! Now go away already! he is not a professional.

My hunches are, he is a seasoned regular (although not a professsional) and you are bidding on units in his "sweet spot" thereby creating competition for him. In smaller markets, just showing up to certain auctions is infringing on someones sweet spot. You also stand out in the crowd, so you might be drawing more attention then normal 6'4" tall, 350 lbs.?

It's typical for vets to try to single a couple of newbies who they think have potential to be long-term competition and try to weed them out by running them up. It's all fair as far as i'm concerned but the "Now go away already!" is a bit much. I know you have to fight with the ammo you got, and you said you bid as high as your budget would allow, I would just suggest keep doing what your doing, and when he bids on units you run him up.

The one sure fire way to get old-timers and newbies off your back is to make them pay big time on everything they bid on. Yea, they might drop a few units on you, but just smile and keep coming back. The other way to send a meesage is to go BIG on some units, even ones your nemesis isn't bidding on. This is a gamble, and you have to be willing to lose some money, but it sends a clear message that you have money to spend (and lose) so 1. you can't be intimidated by being run up, 2. You can make life miserable for everyone else.

The bad news with this technique is you will lose money, and potentially a lot of money. The good news is you should be able to get your nemesis and other knats off your balls within a couple of months instead of induring the thousand cuts of death from this guy and others for the next year, 2 years, however long you plan to do this.

Here is what I would do to your "friend". Next time he is bidding on a unit, assuming it's a slow auctioneer, walk right up to him and say "Oh, your bidding on this unit?" Then drop the maximum you would be willing to pay for the unit right there. For instance say the bid is at $200 and the most you would consider paying is $800, then walk right up to him and bid "$800!" Now he has to go $825 or $850 to win it. Don't do it every time though, do it a couple of times then leave him alone cause he will try to drop a unit on you. Now he never knows when you are going to blow the bid up!

If he's got any sense he will move on to messing with someone else.  ;)

Good Luck!
