eBay / Re: Do eBay buyers ever ask you to sell outside of eBay?
« on: January 11, 2014, 10:16:48 AM »
Not true huh? Let me see what you posted in the message after this one...

When you are not covered:

Items are picked up locally or delivered in person.

and...

You've received a claim or a chargeback, and the shipped item is found to be significantly different than it was described.
Example: You describe a new laptop, but send a used one.

Now, having completed the transaction outside of eBay, how do you prove either of the above cases?

Your response doens't really make any sense to me. You can complete a transaction outside of ebay while still accpeting Paypal and still shipping the item and not doing a local pickup. If you do a local pickup there's no reason to accept Paypal anyway, if your meeting in person no reason why the buyer can't give you cash plus even if you did not mind taking Paypal you can't show tracking.

My point is seller protection is not unique to ebay and not only that it's not even an ebay feature its a Paypal feature so transactions dont have to be through ebay to be elibible for Paypal protection.

I just had a transaction 2 weeks ago where I sent the customer a Paypal invoice outside of ebay, customer opened a not recieved claim, I sent Paypal tracking number, within a matter of days Paypal closed the case in the resolution center and paid the customer $1,024 instead of me having to pay it out of my pocket. You are wrong in stating seller protection isn't offered on non ebay transactions

When you are covered:

1Your transaction is marked either eligible or partially eligible. You can check the status on the Transaction Details page.
2Your primary residence, as listed in your PayPal account, is in the United States.
3The item is a physical, tangible good that can be shipped.

AND you do the following:

You ship the item to the shipping address listed on the PayPal Transaction Details page. If you’re not selling on eBay, make sure you ship to a Confirmed Address. This means that you’re shipping to an address that PayPal has validated to help reduce chances of fraud.
We recommend you ship within 7days of receipt of payment.
For all transactions, keep proof of shipment and delivery that can be tracked online. If your buyer picks the item up in person, or you can't provide traceable proof of delivery, your transaction won’t qualify.
For payments over $250 USD (or local currency equivalent, including shipping and tax) or more, be sure that you have signature confirmation of delivery in addition to proof of shipment (See above). If a buyer files a claim, you must respond to our requests for information as outlined in our communications to you.

When you are not covered:

Items are picked up locally or delivered in person.
You sell services, intangible items, or digital goods.
You receive multiple payments for the same item.
You've received a claim or a chargeback, and the shipped item is found to be significantly different than it was described.
Example: You describe a new laptop, but send a used one.
PayPal Direct Payments
Virtual Terminal Payments
PayPal Business Payments
Items that are not shipped to the recipient shipping address on the transaction details page. If you originally ship the item to the shipping address but the item is later redirected to a different address, you will not be eligible for PayPal Seller protection. We therefore recommend not using a shipping service that is arranged by the buyer, so that you will be able to provide valid proof of shipping and delivery.

Don't do it. The guy can receive the item then put a charge back claim with PayPal for a refund and you have no seller protection. There is a solution though, Modify your listing to have a 'buy it now' price along with the auction bidding. Set the 'buy it now' price for what the guy offered. This way he can buy it immediately for the agreed price and your butt is still covered.

This is not true. The buyer and seller protection is through paypal not ebay. Even though ebay claims handles disputes on ebay it's actually paypal that pays out on them. same way if a buyer claims they didnt receive but you show delivered paypal pays out instead of you for the seller protection.

even transactions outside of ebay are still covered by paypal seller protection as long as you ship to their address as it appears on their paypal account and its a confirmed address. i do about half my selling outside of ebay and ive had paypal pay out on many claims. just recently paypal paid out on a claim for $1,000 no questions asked off ebay i just had to upload tracking.

the one instance paypal wont offer seller protection is if you have a paypal virtual account or credit card terminal. those transactions are not covered by paypal seller protection because someone doesn't have to be a paypal member so they and their address are not vetted by paypal like members

yeah you can put buy it now. it does help sales as  you not only appeal to auction buyers but also those who dont want to wait for an auction to end to maybe win an item. that said the whole point of getting people off ebay is to avoid ebay fees

It happens occasionally. Seems like it is usually someone nearby but not always. In one case I had tons of miniatures from a closed miniatures store. There were these little porcelain vases. I had about 1600 of them. I was selling them on ebay in lots of 5 then 10 then 20, each time a slightly better deal because I wanted to get rid of them. I think the lots of 20 were $25.00. I would list 10 lots of 20 and the same person would buy them all. We finally exchanged phone numbers and made a deal off ebay for the rest of them. I think I had almost 1500 left at that point and she paid me $1400 for them. No fees. I do make sure to never make a deal in writing though. For me it's nice to avoid fees but not sure what the benefit is for the buyer.

once someone buys from you, at that point you have their email address so can safely just email them right off ebay, say hey you been buying all my such and such, we've had a few successful transactions. if we take this off ebay it saves me 13% in fees and I can pass some of that savings along to you.

the problem i think travis was facing is if someone hasn't bought from you, you don't have any contact info from them, all you know is their ebay name and only have the abiliity to message or contact them through the ebay system

Yeah, in order to provide the buyer with my email address I had to write it like this:  example (at) mywebsite.com

no, you don't want to do that for two reasons. first off ebay has pretty sophisticated technology that monitors messages and stuff. more importantly though, if you get into a dispute with a buyer they have leverage to threaten you to tell ebay you were arranging offers off ebay.

i know some people dont like giving hteir phone number out, ifthats you just use the "burner" app which creates fake numbers for your calls, you can choose the area code. just send a message saying call me to discuss. ebay doesn't seem to have a problem with exchanging phone numbers like they do email. then discuss and arrange over the phone. dont give people your email through messaing, its a recipe to get booted from ebay

Make sure you never leave a papertrail through ebay organizing an off ebay transaction. If I'm not mistaken ebay also forbids you to exchange personal emails through ebay messaging which makes it hard to communicate with a buyer to arrange an off ebay deal.

The plus side to you is you avoid ebay fees. You still have Paypal seller protection and buyer still has Paypal buyer protection. I guess there really is no negative to you.

I have an 800 number not sure how they feel about personal numbers but if someone asks for larger quantities or something and I think they are trying to go off ebay I'll normally say I have my 800 number on all my listings, please contact me to discuss. They will calla nd I can arrange that way with no paper trail.

If I do write back I'll say something like contact me to discuss and I can put up a special listing just for you, so on papaer looks like I'm goinna go through ebay even though they gonna call me and we can arrange something off ebay

Donations & Taxes / Re: The Tax Man Cometh

i have to pay taxes quarterly so can't really wait  until the end of the year. this last part of the year was good but bad for taxes. i think we gonna owe about 30k. have the money set aside and fortunately paypal reserves are starting to be released so i can at least pay my taxes. paypal does seem pretty cool though, my rep said if i couldn't pay my taxes give a call and they could release some money prematurely so i could do so

the least attented auctions in my area are the ones where the facility conducts the auction themself. maybe they have a small contact list of people to call, maybe they place the required newspaper ad but not much beyond that. on the other hand the auctions who hire an auctioneeer have big crowds. probably because a. the auctioneer has their own following and own website and does their own advertising outside of what the facility does. aslo oftentimes these are done on a circuit so to speak where a caravan of cars goes to all the auctions. maybe one facility is sorta out of the way so normally people wouldn't attent but because its a caravan you cant exactly skip one auciton and then catchup with the group later because you never really know how long things will take

PayPal / Re: I HATE PAYPAL!!! Reserves are killing my business!!!
« on: January 03, 2014, 02:11:05 PM »
Hey guys, just wanted to report back on what happenned. I was really concerned this was like the end of my business or I'd only be able to sell the first week or two of the month and then stop for the rest.

I was able to raise my prices. I also found a cheaper supplier. This allowed me to make 20% margins so what paypal is holding is my profits but not my operating cash. I did lose a little business due to the price increase but most customers stayed with me as I'm the best and most professional in my field not only my ego talking but customers have said the same. Others wait a week to ship, dont pack items as well as i do, poor communication, etc.

January 20 I start getting my holds released and then moving forward its justs profits held.

Contact eBay and provide the tracking number showing that the package was delivered. Then eBay will go back to the buyer and get the money for you.

thanks for the tip i wasn't even gonna bother i figured they'd tell me my fault for refunding too early. ill have to give that a shot

Yes, A lot of people have been looking for their packages, USPS lost a few, and yes, people wanting refunds when the package did not get there during it's estimated time period even though it was free shipping. Funny how people think small sellers on Ebay actually somehow control the U.S.P.S. or U.P.S.

thats what annoys me. i ship all my packages within 24 hours max, generally within a few hours. i've gotten a few neutral feedbacks stating slow shiping time. ive requested feedback revisions saying i printed your label within 2 hours and shipped same day, how long the post office takes is out of my control, we'll see if they revise.

Um, why are you out? Just contact him and tell him that since the package has now been delivered that you would like payment .

i did, very few people out there are honest, if a guy has his money back and free product and knows i have no recourse hes not gonna pay. i have had a few honest people pay me when they could have gotten away with not doing so but this guy was not one of them. it was only like $115 fortunately but i still hate losing money

eBay / Slow Holiday Mail & Annoying Customers? Anyone else?
« on: January 02, 2014, 09:47:19 AM »
Obviously mail is slower during the Holidays. I'm seeing some first class packages taking like 10 days, even priority which was guranteed in 1,2 or 3 days is now 4 days. I have so many buyers wanting refunds. One guy I actually gave a refund to and package showed up very next day so I'm out payment and product. Now I'm telling people I gurantee I will refund or reship but will wait appropraite time to make sure package truly is lost and not just slow. what a headache. i love how people wanna do my free shipping option and then wanna cry they didnt get item next day when if they wanted to they could upgrade for an additional fee. im also annoyed usps is now calling delivery confirmation tracking, its misleading. i get at least 3 messages a day saying hey my package is still sitting at such and such or my package is still in this state. i have to give them the whoel spiel about ussp is delivery confirmation not tracking.
