Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #1...January, 2012
« on: January 09, 2012, 03:24:10 PM »
Went to a flea market about 40 miles away to check it out for future buying...not selling.

Found it lacking compared to another one about same distance but in slightly different direction, so ruling something out is valuable again.

Then went to Auction #1 which was nearby and was one-item at a time auction. Didn't buy a single thing. If you don't get the first $5 bid in and it ends up going for $17.50 to $25 there probably isn't money to be made unless it's a $50 to $100 item that people just aren't smart about. Since more of my cronies are buying piece items now, that isn't likely to happen.  Auction #2 was to be the same way and I decided to skip it.

I did talk to a part-time auctioneer who was selling at the flea and his report was that yes their auctions were AGAIN hitting the 100 attendee mark on a regular basis and prices were skyhigh. The trend seems to continue with new batches of tv show watchers still flowing in (and then out) like a high-water tide.

Oh well, have to pick and choose...and buy more single items with care.

Cool....

If you get on the show it will also be an opportunity to add a chapter to your book !

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Most commonly found items
« on: January 08, 2012, 09:25:29 AM »

Since I haven't actually bought a unit yet, I was hoping for some insight as to what's usually inside those unmarked boxes. My guess is junk, but what are some of the non-junk things you've found often or at least with some consistency?

1) your guess about "junk" is pretty much correct for 90% or more of boxes.
2) all the answers from reply #2 above on down are accurate in my experience.
3) as far as non-junk items (and the items I like to sell,) the following are examples:

a) unbuilt models (plastic or balsa)
b) decorator items in pristine condition
c) name brand tools (Makita, Snap-On, etc)
d) collector coins
e) spendable coins and cash
f) gift cards and the like
g) designer clothing, shoes (and good quality work clothing)
h) firearms
i)  better artwork
j) consumer electronics
k) ham radio/scanners
l)  good quality toys
m) heaters in winter, air-conditioners in summer
n) lapidary equipment
o) small accent furniture (no mattresses, chests, dining tables)
p-z) half an alphabet of above should get you started....

Now all you have to do is buy a locker, move the stuff, sell the stuff !

I think I jinxed today at the flea by writing about wind/rain in another thread recently.

Today it was only 40 at 5:30 a.m. on the way to the flea market and I hadn't really looked at the forecast. If I had I would have seen that WIND was a possibiltiy.

It hit about 11 a.m. with just some steady 3 to 5 mph, but big gusts came about every 20 minutes (felt like 25 mph or so) and wreaked HAVOC.  After the 3rd gust I just stopped picking stuff up and put it in my van.  Winds stayed steady after that right up until 1:30 when I left.

During the big gusts the neighbor across the way had one of his two canopies fly up about 4 feet. It was linked to the other one, otherwise it just would have gone flying away. He had 3 people working with him under the two canopies and they got it under control, but couldn't collapse them fast enough. Glad I don't put one up except for summer sun or rain possibilities.

Wore me out just fighting mother nature !  (but a good day money-wise none-the-less).

Will let you know how we do.

Money.....

I admire your tenacity when working with clothes. I couldn't do it. I sell leather jackets, sports related jackets, work jackets, sports jerseys and that's about it. Better shoes  (mostly with boxes). Best Jordan's go on eBay where I recently sold two pair...one for $70 something and the other for $150 area.

The amount of clothes each of us gets certainly lends itself to a selling opportunity though. Some of the guys I know just dump them out on the ground or leave them in the totes they come in and let people burrow through it.  There are several vendors who have them all arranged on hangars and those "x" type clothing stands...I try to keep an eye on how they are doing, but hard to tell; I guess the real tell is that they keep coming back, so must be making some money.

**

Today (Saturday the 7th of Jan, 2012)....only 42 degrees here in central California at 5 a.m. .... that's an improvement on about the last 3 saturdays when it was 32 or so.  I have to be at my reserved spot before 6 a.m. or they sell it to a "daily" seller. Will warm up today to about 55 to 60 by noon or so.

Good luck with your clothes...I'm taking none today.

Flea Markets / Re: First weekend of the year
« on: January 06, 2012, 02:19:34 PM »

Anyone sold at the flea at start of a new year right after xmas?  Will report back Saturday night on how well did or didn't do.

I sold Saturday, Christmas Eve and did well. I sold Saturday, New Years Eve and did OK. I'll be there Saturday the 7th and see what happens.

My feeling is people didn't get everything they wanted for Christmas, they are always looking for a bargain or a special item, some people (kids as an example) got money for Christmas and are ready to spend it.

The thing that would bother me would be that wind you're talking about. As bothersome as rain. With only a 20% chance of rain you should be OK.

Sounds like all you regulars who have posted here in the last few days will be busy with traveling and hopefully BUYING a lkr or two !

My last wednesday auction set was cancelled because the mgrs didn't get the timing right on their legal notices, so now it will be three weeks until those come up and the legal notices had to be redone (more cost for the company).

THEN, I just plain forgot about an auction yesterday, BUT there are always more auctions to come and I doubt the one I missed had those gold bars I am always looking for.

I did make a couple of small scores at two separate flea markets this week, and an item I got a couple of weeks ago for $10 just sold on eBay for $100, so the battle continues

Or for someone who prefers a 10" screen to a couple of inch screen.  ;)

21 hours left on my first month of cellular data....I have used 139 mb of the 250 monthly allotment...111mb left...guess I'd better "use it or lose it"...too bad it doesn't roll over, but then next month I would just have a bigger surplus.

Now I have a good idea of how much I can use the 3G aspect and not run out of "time". I have consistently used this at 3 or 4 flea markets a week for the last month and look forward to the "big score" one of these days. Best so far was a $30 purchase which sold for $150 and a $5 purchase that sold for $48 I think it was.

Looked up one item at a flea market today but decided against it.  Went to a flea 50 miles away yesterday and bought 3 items for a total of $25 and hoping to sell them for about $75; not a lot, but would pay for the gas and then some.

Dregs...

No, I don't even play the lottery, but success is measured by many standards and money earned is only one of them.

If I only needed $1,000 a month to meet my needs your figures would have to be altered substanially downward; probably the most important thing for the people who write and read here is that they are satisfied in one way or another with what is happening for them, or if they are not, that they then move on to other endeavors.

If one has shelter, food and water one is doing well these days, and if there is money for extras and the future, what more could one ask ?

2nd episode...Jan 3, 2012.

Boxes in Hollywood….probably rare movie memorabilia…and I’m not there.
Some kid outbids Barry for a minute. Kid still in at $1800…Barry get it for $2K.

**
More boxes in second “vault” type container. Full of books.
Dave likes it. Dave gets it…$900. “gold or mold”

**
Barry goes back to his $2k….Starts throwing stuff out as he always done. Bowl of hair.
Whoa (and a commercial, and…) old top hat for appraisal.

**
Darrel likes it (last lkr of day)..Jarrod doesn’t like it but bids anyway “A buck maybe … but no dough”. Jarrod gets it…Brandi throws something at him.

**
Dave’s book lkr…$200 value in first 3 boxes ! Total value? … $9,000 he says in what he walks by with half the unit left…now it’s up to $15K. I thought this guy was smart.

**
Jarrod’s lkr….broken tools, whoa (the key word meaning some real treasure is coming after the commercial)…1915 license plates (thank you producers). Rest is dump run..thanks for the realism.

**
Barry's old beaver hat 1878...value...$450 (from a $2000 dollar lkr).

**
License plates...worth ... $275..out of a $1250 lkr. Call it a loss and move on.

SHIPPING WARS next week is looking better all the time.
