General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What do you do with printers?

Unless they are new in a box they go straight to the free e-waste at the dump.

Never that bad but I can see how it could happen. We sell most of our stuff on EBAY, Amazon and Craigslist. A couple times a year we do a huge garage sale to get rid of the leftovers.  Then we take a deep breath, box up everything that is left and put a free stuff ad up on craigslist with the stipulation that the taker takes it all. Sometimes it might require a couple trucks to take it but there is always someone out there who will race over to get it. It feels really good to start fresh once in a while.

#94 I was out of town for a week and my friend/wife/father/son... was supposed to pay the bill and forgot.

#93 I was on my way to pay the bill and had my purse snatched at Walmart...followed by...but I would like to buy my stuff back from you so how much? Answer: You can have it back for $250. Ok it will take me a couple days to make the money but I'm working tonight and tomorrow night so I'll call you Wednesday. She didn't call. Based on information received from storage facility and the little black book found in the unit the owner is a hooker. Based on the fact she wasn't able to come up with the $250.00, not a very good one. The little black book was the best thing in the unit. Very entertaining.

It's a horrible show and yes I have watched it. It's totally like passing an accident on the highway. You don't want to look but you can't help it. I just keep telling myself that hopefully this poor child is at least benefitting financially from this trainwreck.

The Lounge / Re: Worst Christmas Gift of 2012
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:00:37 AM »
I agree that gift cards are impersonnal and avoid them when I can. However, I did have to lower myself to the gift card level for a couple nephews that live far from me and I rarely see so as a result I had no idea what they have or need. Also a daughters boyfriend who fishes got a electronic gift certificate for an online fishing supply place that he likes (that's what he wanted so....) I also spice up my childrens Christmas stockings with a few gift cards for places they like (they are adults). I do like to receive them but not from close friends or family. I don't think it's the idea of the card itself that I don't like, more the fact that the exact amount spent is right there for all to see.

I am laughing right now about the poster that almost bought Christmas cards before remembering to just use ones he had from a storage unit. I just did the same thing except I DID go buy the stupid cards at Target and never even thought of picking out of the hundreds I have waiting to be sold. Aaarrrggghhh!

As far as gifting from stuff found in units, I didn't but would if I found something that I thought someone would like. I need to plan ahead next year and save up. My kids (adults) are among the snobby types that would not be too appreciative of storage unit gifts although they are happy to collect stuff throughout the year from the units.

$2000 for a 10x20. Have bid up to about $3500 a few times but didn't get them.

Just public storage and no I won't use a credit card. I much prefer that the storage facilities take cash only. I would hate to see someone get carried away and spend more than they can afford and allowing credit cards can allow that.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: $10,000 Storage Unit?
« on: November 30, 2012, 09:06:36 AM »
Yep, once. Paid $500 earlier this year. Return so far about $10,500. Still have a few items left to sell. Might make another $300-500 on it if I'm lucky. Biggest single item in that unit was $750, made about $4000 in assorted sterling, a little over $1000 in books (Amazon, still dribbling in, the gift that keeps on giving), $800 in gold jewelry and a whole bunch of miscellaneous stuff. Most memorable unit to date for sure.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How much time to clean out a locker ?
« on: November 30, 2012, 08:49:12 AM »
48 hours seems to be the norm for my area. Occasionally 24 hours. As calcoastgal said it does help to leave the unit spotless because they do remember. There have been a couple times where we have needed an extra day or two and generally they will give in. I recently went to an auction where gave a week to clean out. Didn't buy one there but that would be great.

Bought a set of Christmas dishes at an auction house for $5.00 recently. Listed them on EBAY and sold them for $300!

I'm sure we all let tens of thousands of dollars slip through our fingers, lol! If a unit is really a good one we are more likely to pick out the choice things and take a mountain to the goodwill.....etc. But when a unit is a potential loss, yeah we start looking at everything a little closer. I can not list the number of times I have looked at something with dismay thinking "why did someone store this?" only to find out it has value to someone. For example, got a unit with two large tubs of spools of thread. Set them aside for a couple weeks because I didn't think they were worth anything. One day I looked them up and ended up selling them in several huge lots on EBAY for a total of about $400. Who knew? Another time I set aside a little file of papers from a unit. Eventually uncovered it one day, found a folded piece of paper, glanced at it, reached to drop it in the trash and at the last second decided to look closer....WWII German map, sold it for $750.00. Several times I have found cash in odd places, (pockets, greeting cards, back packs, checkbooks...never in a bible yet but always look). So, no I don't always really take time to maximize my profit on every unit but when I do it's amazing what you can sell sometimes to make your money.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Keep it or sell it?
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:10:36 AM »
Pretty much we sell it if it's worth anything. I would definitely trade up furniture if I were to find something I like better than what I already have but that doesn't happen too often. Have kept some clothes. Always keep cleaning supplies if it's a product I would use. Occasionally keep unopened things like shampoo or lotion but would never keep or sell partially used products. They go in the trash. Lots of things are kept for a while. Spouse likes cool man cave type stuff (neon lights, taxidermy, knives....) but of course pretty much everything is 'for sale' and eventually it goes and is replaced by some other new cool object. Sometimes when one of us likes something we put it on EBAY or Craigslist with a pretty high price and if it goes, fine...if not we keep it. We can always sell it later when we get bored with it. I remember once we had just found a nice shop vac in a unit which my husband claimed because he needed a new one. A week later we had a garage sale and someone asked it we had a shop vac for sale. He goes in the garage and pulls out the shop vac and sells it to the guy. I said "I thought you wanted that". His reply "I'll find another one soon enough". And of course he did.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Cost of units in your area?
« on: November 15, 2012, 08:49:14 AM »
In my area box units can go pretty high also. An 8x10 locker loaded with boxes will bring probably $800-$1200. Much more if there is evidence of money, like other things showing expendable income in the unit (fishing poles, kayaks, golf clubs, equestrian gear, boxes marked grandma's silver set...) much less if there is evidence of no money, (broken stuff, trash/recycles, boxes marked 'save for garage sale' and 'dirty clothes')

Oh urns. Was at an auction yesterday and one box up front said greenfield cemetery. No way I was bidding on that unit. Yuck!!

Gotta agree with this one. I was at that same auction and saw that box. I'm hoping that they were NIB (New in box) Urns and not "in use" ones. I didn't bid on it either.
