Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: Hello Folks
« on: January 08, 2014, 07:56:03 PM »
Last auction had very nice tool locker and was sold for $1500, and it sucks I didn't bring that much money with me, cuz I would bought it all day long. Very nice learning experience

It's better to have too many jackets on when it's cold; you can always take some off.

It's better to take more money than you think you'll need; you might need it.

eBay / Re: Do eBay buyers ever ask you to sell outside of eBay?
« on: January 07, 2014, 08:49:37 AM »
Have I ever posted a link to my eBay account?

No.

Sets of four have sold for $100 to $125. Singles have sold for $25 to $40.

eBay / Re: Do eBay buyers ever ask you to sell outside of eBay?

Just got an email from a guy who offered to purchase an item I'm selling on eBay for about 30% more than the current bid. He wants to send funds via PayPal, then he wants me to cancel the auction. He made a very fair offer. He seems legit, has good feedback and thousands of transactions.

I don't sell a lot of stuff on eBay, so I wouldn't know if this is a scam or not. What are the risks and how should I protect myself if I decide to proceed?

If your item is sitting at $66 and he is offering another $18 or so (for a total of $84) it might be because he thinks it's going to go for more than that...say $100.  When they try that with me I usually just tell them to bid their max (the $84) and they will probably get it for less (or at the most, the $84).

They don't lose anything if they win it between $66 and $84, and you still win. If it goes higher than that they might continue on anyway. If they don't then you will be getting more than the $84 from someone else.

The only down side to you is if the auction bogs down and you only end up with the $66, but personally I'd rather go for the other bids.

With a little over a day left your item is currently at $76 so my example above is fairly accurate I think !  ;

Considering there are over 50,000 storage facilities in the USA there are at least as many answers to your question, but GENERALLY most places will conduct an auction if there are at least 3 people in attendance. I have seen it happen with just 2 buyers there.

It's more likely the auctions would be cancelled "due to weather" (which might or might not cut down on attendance).

A standard thought is "I'll go because no one else will". Many people have that thought and then many show up.

Yes, when you add the auction to your watch list, you can see the listing even after the auction ends. You can also copy & paste the URL.

Could you provide the url to the one in question here so we could see how it completed ?

Here's a view of several auctions on VSA. Some of them were test auctions but I think the one at the top was a live auction which expired early on Sunday, Jan 5, 2014. I'm pretty sure this was a real auction because I remember going into it and seeing  a list of several people who had bid on it. I think one of those people was StorageBuyer.

I know the other auctions were test auctions as I drilled down through one of them and it said something to the effect of "do not bid...this is a test auction."

Anyway, is there anyway we can see the outcome of a real auction on VSA whether we were a bidder on that auction or not?  I would think this would be an important feature so that bidders (OR non-bidders) could see if they had won or not and in the case of non-bidders if they had rightly decided NOT to bid based on what they had seen in the photos.

So, is it possible to see an auction's outcome and if so how (especially if one doesn't have the auction # to reference in a search ?

The Lounge / Why doesn't someone DO SOMETHING about the weather !
« on: January 05, 2014, 10:08:13 AM »
Everyone talks about it...get busy and change it !

Just watched a report at 8 a.m. on Sunday the 5th of Jan, 2014 that temps in the Northeast, Midwest and even some of the south are BELOW ZERO with wind chill readings of up to 70 below zero.  That's friggin' cold. Some football game today is going to see some frosty fans and you can bet the weather will be right up there with talk about the game.

So what can be done about it?  Nada. Except moving to California, where the overnight lows are up to a balmy 35 degrees. By 9 or 10 a.m. it has been up to 50 and by 2 pm a balmy 65.  I knew there was a reason I moved here.

Meanwhile, sympathies to those of you in those cold climes.

Not the first time this has been done I'm sure, (or the last), but it does have some interesting twists.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Manager's "special"
« on: January 04, 2014, 07:52:05 PM »
. I have purchased a few Managers units. They were not bad. You just have to bid on what you see.

In my area they are bad...and they announce them (they don't want to hear complaints later). Subsequently they go for less money that they might. Of course most of them are so bad you can tell they are either the leftovers of the former tenants having ravaged the space or that managers put them together from multiple bad spaces into one.

I'm talking 5 complete mattress sets (with stains), ripped sofas, pictures with broken glass, dining chairs with torn rattan seats, etc, etc. You name it, it's bad and they sell for $5 to $25. Only the low-end buyers who can't even afford a $100 locker buy them...and sometimes the lockers don't even sell they are so bad.  ::)

Online Storage Auctions / Re: How many people buy online?
« on: January 04, 2014, 12:39:32 PM »
Live auctions are overrated.

Yet they have succeded for three decades or more, and granted the tech world wasn't ready for them during 20 or so of those years, but the internet has been around since the late 90s in pretty good strength and yet no-one jumped on the idea.

Now there are a number of online auction sites (and probably more regionally) but they still haven't taken hold.

Exploring this here in the forum a few months ago I was very surprised to find how few there were in the Dallas-Ft Worth area and that is one of a half dozen major markets in the USA.

Nope, I'm a die-hard "it won't replace" regular auctions person and I doubt it will ever be a big supplement to the live auctions either.

A question in the craigslist forum made me wonder if attendance is higher or lower depending on the way the auction is advertised.

Dustin might mean this thread:

I think there may be a misunderstanding. I'm not expanding the auction schedule to 50 states, I meant that we're going to be contacting every storage facility in the U.S. about VSA, by phone or email. To save some time, I'm trying to work out a deal with a major storage aggregator to send out a mass email advertisement to storage facilities in their database. Not very personal, but the alternative would cost tens of thousands of dollars and take months to complete.

Yes, I have been buying more units than usual and it has overwhelmed me. I hire people to move the stuff but the time sorting, posting ads on Craigslist, meeting customers, really ads up. Now add in a full time job and I've had very little time for anything else. Yes, I should probably quit buying units for a while and focus on VSA full time, but I love buying storage units. What can I say? That's like telling a dog to quit chasing a cat.

OK, got it. Letting all 56K facilities know about the vsa service.

Now, so I don't again get the wrong idea, do I understand from the last paragraph quoted above that you are doing the following:

1) auction lists for Texas
2) vsa site and development
3) buying lockers
4) "now add in a full-time job" (is this in addition to the 3 other things in this list? If so, what is the nature of the work?
