The Treasure Chest / Re: Got a 10x30
« on: October 07, 2011, 07:25:57 PM »
Got the 10x30 I showed everyone the other day. In the dressers so far I've doing stamps, ball cards, and coin proof sets, a AT&T wireless modem thumbdrive, a meggelan, a few watches, and have only scratched the surface.

Not to mention the vintage exercise/belt machine !

Congrats on the win !

What I don't get (and I don't believe you have addressed here) is where things like headboards, mattresses (whatever else you mentioned) DO GO TO if your landfills won't take them.

Have you ASKED the landfill or other city/county officials where to take them?

You are not the only one in your area that needs to get rid of old mattresses and the like. I think you need to to a little more local research on those matters and PLEASE, let us know the answer you receive.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: The last few auction the people
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:27:07 AM »
have really started to drop off. Use to get 40 to 60 now down to 15 -30. last 3 weeks have seen a huge drop off. Also storage companys have reported more people are paying off units. Guess the tv shows have impact on both renter and buyer. And a lot of people i have talked to sellers are having a harder time then ever selling due to as I have said this before to much supply and not enough demand.

I went to one of the major auctioneer's two separate auctions yesterday (10 6 2011) and found about 15 people at the first one and maybe 30 plus at the next. That's definitely down from the 60 to 100 of some months ago, but still high compared to a year or more ago when (in my area) a BIG crowd was 25 and a regular crowd was maybe 10.

I am going to three auctions today by another of the bigger auctioneers and I am expecting bigger crowds at these facilities. I will post here and in the Lookey Loos, October 2011 thread later today.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Antique Dollhouse
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:28:04 AM »
Thanks for the suggestion.  I contacted the local guild who specializes in dollhouses and miniatures.  The interesting part is, one woman responded telling me that, if I expect to make a profit, I will be disappointed".  First off, she doesn't know what I paid for the dollhouse.  Secondly, she doesn't know what I'll accept for the dollhouse.  How does she know that I'll be disappointed?  I told her as much and haven't heard back.

Stay tuned.........

In retrospect, does "I told her as much" seem like the right response to this person who might have connected you with a buyer?  Not surprised you haven't heard back.

I would have been  impressed with the dollhouse too if I had seen it, but the 2nd thing that goes through my mind is "Would I be able to double my money on this?"

You COULD try to sell the furniture as a lot....you might recover some of your cost by doing that, and maybe down the line the house would sell too.

So what's the latest news on this item?

This concept has been discussed here before; usually I will provide a link, but will PASS this time.

In my opinion....this would never fly at my flea market ... a small business. Most of my customers wouldn't grasp the concept. I think the NUMBER of customers who would understand this would be so small that it would be inconsequential.

Sometimes....Steve Jobs not withstanding....there is a limit to what will fly, or to what EXTENT it will fly.

Then I took just one load to the dump and it cost me $60 and they were also picky about what they would take. I have several more loads of trash and don't know where to go with it. If the dump won't take it, who will???

Now you know why regulars get upset with "newbies" .... the reality is setting in.

My question to you is.... what won't the dump take? You said they were "picky".  Was it tires, paint, electronics ?
In many states (particularly high population states or areas) they HAVE to be "picky".  We only have one earth to live on and we can't just throw everything in a big hole and expect life to go on as usual.

Typically when a "picky" dump or landfill facilty won't take some item they will TELL you where you can take the rejects.
My city has a special "hazardous waste" facility (located miles from the dumps) that takes paint, electronics, etc.

Depending on your state or city there might be places that specialize in TVs, computers, etc.

It takes effort....an effort the TV shows don't show when the clowns are taking their antique music boxes, guns, coins, decor items to the appraisers !

Welcome to our world !  ???

What's it Worth?? / Re: Fire extinguisher and radio shack computer
« on: October 06, 2011, 06:33:50 PM »
I looked on ebay and that was the wrong one. That was a model 4-c. I tried google and couldnt find it either. My only source of internet is my phone and thats sketchy at best. I will try to keep looking but I might have to take to an antique dealer or of the like when I got time.

If the 4c is anything at all like what you have at least it might be an indicator unless your was 10 years older and more antique like.

As to internet, I know you live in a rural area/small town setting, but is there a library anywhere nearby...even the sticks should have the internet at a library. Might be a little inconvenient, but as YOU have said..."you do what you have to do"....and I doubt the librarian would treat you as badly as those cows did !  ;D

One thing about this show I like is that they tell you that most units they buy are a bust.

Yes, they do that in the on-screen disclaimer at the beginning, before audience has settled in. No audio to that effect.

Lets be honest who wants to watch them spend 400 on a locker with the coolest thing being a bread slicer and them only making 200 back? the rare finds are what makes the show

Personally, I do. I'm not saying it has to be even 8 minutes every week, but 8 minutes in 8 episodes would be nice. Then complement that with 8 minutes of going to the dump.

Ok so the fire extinguisher is an Ansul model 4. If anyone knows anything about these please let me know thanks.

For generic info on any item try Google first. If little or nothing comes up there, then try eBay. Type in Ansul model 4 and see what comes up. I did and saw a good example.

What's it Worth?? / Re: 'Made in Italy' Glassware

Couldnt help but laugh as I was reading your post Movieman. I have it up on ebay right now starting at $25. I've had 2 views in 5 days.

What? Battery not included ?  That's a deal breaker for me !  ;)

Can't help you with the glassware, but I bet at least one is worth more than that Martin Luther King picture highlighted by a $3 quartz clock set into his left jacket pocket !

He had a dream....but I doubt it was having people look at his pic when they wanted to know what time it was.  ???

Can't say it affects me much. It is too bad that the kids have to suffer because of the parent's mistakes, I will admit that, but there is also this.

I think the kids are pretty sure to hold on to at least some of the stuff that is really important to them instead of letting mom or dad put it in a "big closet" they can't get to. Sure, there will be exceptions, but I can't tell you the number of times I've found EMPTY game disk boxes and never found the game either (psp, etc). I think the kids kept those out and the games that went with them (in a big binder no doubt).

As to returning the pics, old birthday cards, letters, etc the managers tell me that about 98% of the time when they are able to get ahold of the frm owners they still don't show up for them and the managers end up throwing them away on some kind of time schedule.

In the safe lkr I got in late August there were a ton of photo albums from not only the lkr owner, but from her parents as well. After initial failed negotiations to sell her back her whole contents, I never heard from her again until two of her friends came to the facility yard sale where I was trying to sell her big furn items. After they bought a couple of pieces of leather motorcycle wear they asked about the pictures. Since a full 5 weeks had passed since I had talked to her I simply told them the truth..."I made your friend an offer for EVERYTHING, never heard from her after day one talks, and after a few weeks, all the personal stuff went in the trash. I'm not in the business of storing other people's stuff."

2774
ok, well this locker was a complete bust.

I got my money back, but damn this unit sucks.

Unless my math is wrong you made some money on it.  What about the TVs ?
