Other Forms of Selling / I can't stand selling on facebook anymore

Facebook has helped me sell alot of items, but it has also caused me a lot of grief and headaches and wasted time with the flakes, cheapskates and the drama loving idiots out there. Anyway I am seriously thinking of abandoning facebook all together both for sellling and even my personal facebook profile.  I would love to use craigslist more, but unfortunately there is not really a craigslist site that covers my local area. I do use eBay but there are those items that are either to big/heavy or to inexpensive to hassle with listing and shipping. I have been thinking of creating my own local site to sell items and promote it with twitter and ads in the local classified paper(expensive) here that has a large following. On Facebook, I liked that people would be exposed to my items when they were not necessarily looking for that particular item, so in that way facebook helped, but it is also a timing thing if a person is looking for something you have specifically, good luck for them to find it if they did not get on the group page within an hour or so of posting it.

My question is: Is there another effective method any of you have discovered to getting you items for sale exposed to locals in your area?

I have 1 vintage ladies bulova watch I keep meaning to take to a jeweler to have them check it out before I throw it on ebay. It is 14k gold with about 4 diamonds but it is not working and the conditon isn't great.

The same as you would with a vehicle purchased at a storage unit auction. The towing company exercises a lien on the vehicle. They notify the registered & previous owners of the lien. If no one pays the storage fees, they sell the vehicle at public auction. Very similar here in CA, the DMV has explicit rules on how they are to sell it off, as long as all those rules are followed and you fill out the correct paperwork it is a really simple process. Unfortunately I called the company and the vehicle they are selling was rolled, sop no longer interested, but at least I did the research for future right? :93:

Has anyone ever bought a vehicle at a lien sale from a towing company? Car got towed, owner never paid fess type of thing. What was the experience like? Were there a lot of bidders? Do the cars go for a decent (ie cheap) price or do people spend crazy money. I guess I am more interested in smaller mom and pop towing outfits doing this every once in a while, not the larger companies in LA and such that auction off several cars a week. Let me know if any of you have any experiences to share. Thanks in advance.

I haven't caught anyone, but I am sure it happens, I have so many people at my sales it is hard to keep an eye on everything. I guess if they need it that bad to steal from a yard sale, they can have it. :73:

Where in my post did I talk about using another selling site? I said no one is forcing anyone to sell on eBay is all so if a person thinks the fees are too high you will choose not to sell there. No one is forcing you to sell online at all. No one is forcing you to buy storage units either.
In my opinion selling on Amazon is both more difficult and more expensive and most other sites I know of don't get near the traffic. So it can be a matter of pay eBays fees and sell there, or not sell online at all like, it appeared to me, he was indicating. If the fees are too high no one will use the service.

I know the history of why. It still sucks!! I think if you purchase your postage through eBay/Paypal they know how much you are paying for shipping and a credit should be given for the FVF charged on actual shipping cost. Would not be that hard to figure out. Why punish the masses for the greed of a few. Because eBay is greedier than any of the sellers that were gaming the system.

I think he was indicating that noone forces you to sell on eBay, so if you choose not to sell there you don't pay the fees. I don't like paying 15% either especially when it is charged on the shipping cost as well, but there are some items where I can get alot mor eselling on eBay then local even with the fees, so I suck it up and do it.

There is a local classifieds paper for our town I usually advertise in. I also post it on various local facebook selling groups. Finally I put up signs near my house to get impulse buyers.

I will usually grab something between auctions, especially if I didn't purchase a unit at the previous one. While the other buyers are paying for their units it gives you plenty of time to get something to go. Beats waiting around in the sun for 20 minutes(or more) at the next auction stop.

You value your time to little! I guess its really a unit to unit basis in my opinion, if it is a super fast clean out and a small unit I am satisfied with a $200-$300 profit, if it is a larger unit with alot of stuff to sort through better be at least $500, but I am happier with $1000+. Then again this is not my main source of income so I value my time outside work highly, if I'm not making $30-$50 hour on a unit, I'd rather be out spending my money on more relaxing things than going through other peoples junk. So in most cases if it is not at least $500 profit for me after all expenses I consider it a loss.

interesting concept, don't know how it would work here in the US to sell on eBay if it could be done legally at all. I can see large buyer protection nightmare cases happening with significantly not as described cases. anyway good luck
