Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 2...February, 2011
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:11:42 AM »
Good news here in Memphis,TN.

They are now starting up a new thing. Wohooooo could not come sooner.

All storage auctions in Memphis,TN will from March 2011 start with fees for newbies.
It will cost you as a newbie 100 dollar to even be able attend the auction. Bring your family and it is 100 dollar per head.

If you can not show that you have bought more then 10 units or attended more then 50 auctions the last 3 months you will have to pay up to get in. Of course they give this deposit back to you if you don't buy a locker. And if you buy a locker you get it back after the locker is inspected by the manager. (Must be empty and clean)

This will here in Memphis,TN reduce the crowds with atleast 40-50%
The same thing is beeing looked at in Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas.  And more and more places will be doing it

Best thing about this, it is supported by fedral law as guidelines for the auctioneers.

Went to the Extra space auction today, and i did it again.
I got one locker today, one locker that looked really bad from the door.
It was me and one other guy bidding, i ended up winning the locker for $40.00

Yet again i hit the nail on the head, after doing a quick inventory this afternoon i am looking at sales value of $450-600.00
Under all the clothing, there was a lot of good stuff.
Among the stuff was a brand new unopend PLANTRONICS wireless office headset. This set is beeing sold online for $194.00 i am gonna sell it for $125.00

There was 2 pretty new printers + 1 pretty new scanner + a few good books + 1 king size duvet + 2 complete phone sets + medium size critterbox + 4 pick-nic baskets + tons of clothes + kitchen ware and glassware + a phillips portable radio with ipod docking station.
There was more stuff in the but i have not had time to go thru it all.

That has happend here to, what most of us regular do then is ask him what the number of the next locker is, and we walk of towards the next locker. Leaving the auctioneer with only newbies who are not bidding.

This makes them ask pretty fast if there is any opening bids. LOL most times then he will get a 10 or 20 dollar bid.
But this is not something that happends often.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What is the hardest item to sell ?
« on: February 05, 2011, 02:20:59 PM »
I would say books are hardto sell. It seems no one wants books unless they are for free.
Also i find pictures to be slow, unless they are oil paintings of a well known artist. But prints and other pictures are not moving at all.

So what i do with books and pictures is that i save them up, and twice a year i hold a yardsale for the products that are hard to sell.
Then they can be sold for 2 to 5 dollars a pice.

I would take it to someone who knows about these things. It can be worth $100 or $1000 you never know.
And they can probobly put you in contact with buyers also.

I only bring with me between 800-1000 bucks in cash. But i do have ATM and credit cards ready if i have to stop by one inbetween locations.

Reason for not bringing more cash is for security reasons, and the fact that i have a gameplan going, most possible units for 20-200 bucks. And then make minimum triple back on everything i buy. Like my 50 dollar locker yesterday, turns out a nice profit of minimum 1400 dollars.  I am still waiting for an answeer back on the rock, from Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society.

When i buy lockers i know what i want and what units to bid on. I probobly pass on 80% of the lockers, and bid on 20% of them. I stay away from lockers i know is gonna go ovr 250 dollars.

To Movieman.

Most of us here in Memphis are friendly to the newbies.
But like you said, their is a point where we draw the line.

Weekly i get asked at auctions the same thing, @when is the next auction@ @@where can i find the info on upcoming auctions@ I normally say, you have to find that out your self.  I mean this is part of the job of doing storage auctions, none of us got it handed to us on a silver plater.

I even get 5-6 emails a week where people ask me about next auctions, and again i tell them that they have to find that info on their own. Except a few guys i have given a list to.

I mean if you are serious about this as a newbie, you have to do the groundwork your self. Do not expect the old timers to help you with that. Because they will not help you with that information.  And to me thats just fair.
Any newbies in here having a problem with that ???  If you do, then you are lazy and do not deserve to do auctions

Here in Memphis we don't have a locker deposit.
If you don't clean it out, you get banned for life on future auctions.

Went to the second leg of the U-stor auction today.
I got a unit for $50.00, and so far i am happy with it.

So far i have only gone thru it and taken home a few nice items.

I took home this today:

Technics SL-B100 turtable in working order.
Akai GX630D 4 track studio recorder.
Jimi Hendrix twine printed wall pice.
Some glassware
Spaulding baseball glove
1 18kt gold ring
1 necklace In memory of martin luther king
Martin luther king wall clock ( huge pice )
One stone that looks like meterite ( it is heavy as hell for it's size)  compared it to an ordinary rock, this one i got from the unit is almost twice as heavy.
76 lp's from the 60's and 70's
4 pictures, two of them looks like oil paintings, but i can see a signature on them.
1 old kearasine heater
1 craftsman tool chest
3 old baseball bats
1 old lamp (weird one, made in the USA)

But still alot to go thru. can't wait so see what this $50.00 locker brings.

I agree totally.

When i see people in here that have not even attanded their first auction start to make comments on it, thats just stupid. And when they have one auction under their belt it is almost like they are the king of the auction.

Most people i know in this business has been in it for 20-30 years. They know what they are talkig about, and they know what it is all about.
