Around here, toys sell real fast. Larger furniture items (sofa, dressers, dining room tables, etc.) sell well. Small furniture, I tend to sit on for a while. Sporting goods is another category that flies out the door as soon as I get it! In the last unit I bought, I snapped a pic of a men's bike, threw it up on craigslist with minimal text and someone met me at the unit 40 minutes later.

Funny about the furniture. It's opposite for me, the larger the piece, the longer it hangs around. Small pieces sell faster. Might be a difference in our price structure.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How do you sell art?
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:37:53 AM »
I have a friend from the trail who got some expensive artwork out of a unit about a year ago. Pretty much same story. Easy to identify artist/work, authenticated, but can't get anyone (retail customer or auction house) to look at or make an offer.

My advice would be to take it to a gallery or auction house, but it looks like auction houses on both sides of the country are snubbing artwork right now. I guess they know it won't bring anywhere near the retail value so they don't even want to get into arguements with the owners when it sells for dirt cheap at the auction. My theory anyway.

I can't believe she won that unit for only $3000!! :'(

Hell, it takes $1500 some days around here just to win units owned by local crackheads!  ::)

Problem is, newbies around here think they are in California and are gonna win celebrities units!  :-[ :-[

In my area there are flea markets that are:

1) open on Sunday and Monday only
2) open on Wednesday and Thursday only
3) open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday only
4) open on Saturday and Sunday only

As you can see, one could sell 4 days a week if one wanted to, and certainly it is possible to go SHOPPING four days a week.

Go out another 50 to 90 miles and that process is repeated.

Your area ?

To really make a go at it on Saturday & Sunday I have to travel 40 miles (1 way). There are some fleas closer, about 10 miles away but they don't get enough foot traffic.

To sell on Friday, I have to go 40 miles (1 way) in a different direction.

To sell on Tuesday, I have to go 60 miles (1 way).

Don't know of any places to sell on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Stores / Re: Do you have a brick and mortar store?
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:54:16 AM »
I opened a store just over a year ago. (I have been in this location for over nine years with another business) I have to say that I was just playing with the idea so I was not legal for several months. Things started off kinda slow. At first I was very hesitant to tell people where the items came from. Now I have no problem telling everyone what I do. I believe it is a pull for some to see the kind of things that come out of storage units. Though I make sure to really exaggerate how much work is involved.
I am in a very small town (1500 people) so foot traffic is not heavy. There are two other shops similar to mine here. Slowly things have picked up. I am situated halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles on the 101 and this is a nice area to stop and take a break. I have been pleasantly surprised lately to find that I have quite a following from the San Francisco crowd. I'm finding that there are alot of people that think junk shopping and wine tasting go good together. Who knew? LOL

Time to break out the Boone's Farm for my next yard sale!  :D

Flea Markets / Re: Do people at your flea market come before sunrise?

I think some people get there at 8pm the night before and sleep in their cars/trucks!  ::)

The Lounge / Re: What’s the price of gasoline in your area?

bout $3.50

Psss, your lucky if they don't flick their cigerette butts at you!

Appliances: washers, dryers, refrigerators. Usually gone in a day if asking $200 or less.

Other then some MJ seeds and unit smelling like it I've never gotten any illegal drugs so far (knock on wood).  Now - prescription drugs....if it was legal to re-sale those I'd of made a mint a few times now.  Sucks to toss out ashtma medicine that can cost $5 to $250 in the trash.  Just not worth the liability to give it away, and illegal to sale it.

BIGGEST understatement of the storage auction business environment!!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Lockers Break-Ins
« on: March 07, 2013, 08:10:52 AM »
Don't think that is much of an issue around here.

I bet they are staking out storage units to see which ones have good stuff in them so it's probably someone who is renting a unit at the location or an employee.

I think it would be pretty dumb to just break into random units not knowing if there is anything worth stealing inside of them.

There are some very colorful ones (small, swirled colors in glass) which I use in "artsy" items I create, other than that it just goes in the trash.

I have seen buyers get lockers with plastic gargabe backs full of unprocessed marijuana; best bet on those seems to be to call the cops. Transporting something like that could be a disaster if you got stopped for a broken tail-light.

You?

Why would I call the cops because some nut-job put yard clippings in a trash bag and put it in his storage locker?
 I don't work for CSI/New York-Miami-Las Angeles-Las Vegas-Omaha, Nebraska; so I don't assume I know the chemical/pharmacological identity of any strange products found.

It just all goes in the garbage.  :)

You're just now realizing that Tiger is really Glendon?

I don't think Tiger is Glendon. If you read all his/her posts, you will see he/she has criticized Glendon on several topics, notibly Glendon's solution (or lack there of) for loss prevention.

You give mattresses 0 value? Even the nice one's? Mattresses sell fast on Craigslist. Single size mattresses in average condition $30-50. Full size in average condition $50-100. Queen & King $75 and up. Top quality mattresses in like new condition - 30-40% of their retail value. New in plastic 50-60%

The price of a new mattress is ridiculous. Went to Mattress Firm a month ago to get a single size mattress for my daughter. The cheapest one they had was about $90. It was so cheaply made I could squeeze the top to the bottom with one hand. Average quality single size mattresses start off at about $200, which is why there is such a demand in the second hand market.

Ive got 2 mattresses & 4 boxsprings unused/new in wrapping right now. No calls in 2 weeks. Priced at 50% or less of retail. People haggle anyway so there really is no room to drop the advertised price anymore. The economy must be buzzin where you live but not here. I'm at your "used" price on Craigslist already on a couple of the boxsprings.

I don't think you are gun shy. Prices have been too high on most units in my area since the first of the year. Hopefully prices should come down a bit come first of May.

In my area, without seeing condition, this is how I would price it.

10 fishing poles, no reels = $50-$100
Golf bag                         = $15-$40
3 "Old School" TVs          = $ 0-$30
Mattress & boxspring       = NADA
Golf Clubs                      = $25-$125
Lazy Boy chair                = $25-$100
love seat                        = $25-$100
blue chest/bench            = $40-$40?
Misc. Boxes (10?)           = $100

Estimate value of unit at $280-$635
