I've tried partnerships with a couple of other buyers but they never really panned out. One guy wasn't making enough money with our arrangement and the other guy left the resale scene and went back to his former career field.

For the most part the old timers don't want anything to do with partnerships (maybe cause to them I'm still a newbie) and the newbies who have come in to the scene after me come and go so quickly there is really no time to create a relationship.

Pretty much left to buying and selling or trading pieces from other buyers and if I see one of the old regulars who depends on auctions for thier livelyhood bidding on a unit, I won't jump in. That's the extent of partnerships for me.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall to hear the conversation when he picks someone up to bring home for a night of fun.

If it's near the ocean he can just tell her it's his beach condo!  :D :D

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2013

The last line certainly sums it up !  The up and down "wave' of all the elements you list continues to haunt us.
The scam by the auctioneer was laughable and good that 'he' 'bought' the lkr !

Interesting that some are seeing a lot of junk units & high prices. I am seeing a lot of high prices as well, possibly higher than the first tax season of Storage Wars. The strange thing is at the last auction I saw something I don't think I have ever really seen. The newbies were almost ecstatic talking about thier recent units & finds. Not just 1 or 2, but there were about 6 to 8 different newbies all bragging about how great the units they have won since the beginning of the year.

I've never seen so much backslapping, cheering, glad-handing, and all around outward joy among a group of bidders before. This can only lead to one thing, disaster! So maybe a couple of newbs did get some good units, but this is only going to cause unrealistic expectations and higher bidding. Can't wait to see how happy they are when they start paying $500-$1000 a pop on units with low quality furniture, used household goods, & clothes & then realize thier garage, out-building, house is full of $20 or less items that they will have to nickel & dime through to just break even or even make a modest profit.

One nice unit is fun! 10, 20, 50, & so on, average units is business!

So they think they are real storage auction buyers now yucking it up like school kids on the playground after lucking up on 1 or 2 good units? Like King Leonidas in the movie 300 said, "We will put thier name to the test!"  >:(

This guy has the complete set up. They're really selling this unit on Storage Battles!  :-\  If any of you are looking for low cost rent in Murray, Utah, this property comes fully furnished. Gourd lamps sold separately.

I wonder if he keeps the neighbors up at night with that booming sound system!  :D

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking at estate sales
« on: February 18, 2013, 09:16:18 AM »
I've picked up a few items lately, but it seems like the majority of the people doing sales lately have been watching too much Pawn Stars, American Pickers, Rick's Restorations, Barter Kings, Storage Wars, etc, and they have unrealistic expectations of the value of their junk!

If you try to educate them, they think you are trying to rip them off.  Most of them think they are expert negotiators too....and hold firm to their outrageous prices!  I can't believe how many call me up after the sale offering me a bunch of picked over crap for about three times retail.

I had a guy earlier this week......he had some decent furniture, and I would have been comfortable buying it at $800.....maybe a grand, and I could have turned it quick for around $2k.  After his estate sale was over and he didn't sell a single piece, he told me that after discussing it with his wife, he would sell if to me for the "sacrifice" price of only $4K!

I didn't even bother calling him back.....we're too far apart.....it is worth around 2k......but I can't pay that and make money......at 4k, we're too far about to even mess with it.

Ive found the same thing too. Estate Sales use to be great for picking to re-sell, now they are only SOMETIMES good for getting a deal on something I was going to buy anyway for myself.

I went picking this weekend & now my other venue for getting great deals for re-sale is being infested by novices and retail shoppers. My picks this week are going to have some real tight profit margins.

Although the popularity of storage auctions has come down some, I think the overall popularity of making money by reselling used items or saving money by buying used is increasing. The general public is filtering into all the once hidden venues.

6 years ago, it was all the same faces at estate sales, now huge crowds!
2 1/2 years ago, it was all the same faces at storage auctions, now huge crowds!
3 months ago, it was all the same faces at venue X, now crowds are creaping in!

Stores / Re: Booth space versus full store - I bit the bullet

What about taxes?  Federal and state?  I already pay enought taxes from my real job and don't want to get taxed anymore.  Is the income form the sales in one of the vender stores taxed as income???

Since you already have a "regular job" you pay income taxes on, I think you will find your effective tax rate quite appealing once you start expensing business costs against business income.

In my model, I pay income taxes on income generated from sales at the vendor's store. I also expense the lease, the commission, the credit card fees, & the original cost of goods for re-sale.

I belong to 3, but 1 I have not been on in about 1-1/2 years. This 1 and another I am active. Probably most active on this 1.

Ive never itemized the per unit sales cause there is NO WAY I am going to count all the items in the bins I take to the flea market!

With that being said, if I could guess I would say $2

70% of sales are probably $1
15% of sales are probably $2 - $10
10% of sales over $10
5% of sales .50 cents

The Treasure Chest / Re: $30 Best Buy Gift Card!
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:30:41 AM »
I've found a few cool things this year. Some of it i'm keeping & not sure I want the "public" to know about, and some things i'm waiting to sell before I do the full disclosure.

Travis,

If you put up a seperate Treasure Chest in the VIP room, I would be happy to post there. I just don't see the need to give the general public any incentive to get into storage auctions by posting my "best ofs".  :-*

I let the auctioneer hold it for me. He's going to end up with most of it anyway!  :)

When a unit comes along that you really want and someone outbids you, do you ever get angry?

Generally, when I bid on units that I want and I get out-bid I don't give it another thought cause I'm pretty confident there is not much money (profit) left in them.

Now on units I REALLY want; I don't get out-bid, that's just how I roll!  ;)

Only because I haven't seen a unit in the last 2 years worth more then the money in my pocket.

Now there is always the possibility that some jackpot unit will come up and some other high roller may out-bid me, but we just don't get those type of high quality units in my area. Unless it's a sleeper unit like a piano bench with $17,000 in silver nobody can see from the door.  8)

I'll have to admit that NOT BUYING LOCKERS has become my norm. And so far I'm liking it. I've increased the amount of picking I do and so far it's been profitable.

Not going to the dump, not breaking up particle board furniture, etc has been great. I have more free time to do other things like picking, hiking, etc.

****

I am still going to local auctions and keeping up with my auction friends of the last 9 years but I haven't bought a lkr since mid-December, 2012 and since that time have only bid on a couple at all, and didn't win them. The othe buyers are asking why I even bother to come (since I'm not buying) but I'm thinking one day a lkr worthy of buying will pop up and I'll be there for it.

Meanwhile it's fun to talk with the others about the new wave of high prices and declining value.  See the Auction Scene thread for the lkrs I saw on Feb 13, 2012....didn't get one there either !

I know what you mean. After a couple of good months, prices have skyrocketed again at auction so i'm back to picking again myself this weekend.

This industry is like the flu that won't go away! Everytime things start to turn the corner and it looks like the serious buyers can get back to making money, a new crowd of dolts show up.  :-[

I'm beginning to think this IS the new norm. Maybe a couple of months or an auction here or there where you can get units for a decent price, continually mixed in with random months of big spending newbies that F everything up!

Not necessarily speaking about Mark's situation, but sometimes I wonder if people get so lost, confused, or lose control of their mind that they are not even able to see their actions as being selfish or cowardly. I not sure we can really put a rational explanation toward the thought processes that happen that lead someone to commit suicide. Science might be able to show if their are chemical imbalances, disorders, synoptic breaks, brain damage, etc. that cause suicide, but we may not be able to rationalize their decision making process.

Craigslist / Re: how far do you go testing appliances before selling them
« on: February 14, 2013, 07:55:11 AM »
I have sold hundreds of appliances from storage units and I never tested any of them. Only one appliance was ever returned. Most people don't store appliances that don't work. Every now and then you might run across several non working appliances in one unit that belonged to a appliance repair person, but that's the exception.

I don't have that luck here! I have definitely had issues with refrigerators and flat screen TVs not working. Dryers & microwaves tend to be the only "trustworthy" appliances found in units. Even washing machines are hit or miss for me.
