Went to one today that had about 70 people......I think only around 40 were actually registered though.  Weird auction.  First unit came up and there was a wire feed welder, a big round kerosene heater, a couple of boxes and a couple of plastic ice chests, a jack and a few other items.  Anyway, nobody was bidding, and then some guy finally bid $20, and it stumbled around a bit and it was at $35, and the auctioneer was getting ready to close it out, so I bid, the other guy bid, and I jumped it to $65, and the auctioneer looked around, and that was it, I got it.  Not sure what happened there, because after that, prices went back up to stupid!

A 5x10 with a cheap off brand weed eater, an ammo can marked "grinder", a pair of cheap speakers and a bunch of boxes went for $825!  Lot's of junk filled lockers sold for $200-$300, and a couple of lockers that would have sold for $5-$20 in the "old days" ended up going for $100 PLUS.  Lot's of new people, only saw about six that I know as regulars.  Crowd's still good sized, and prices still up.  Maybe it's just the liberals in Seattle...........

I picked up a Lincoln Wire Feed Welder that way, traded some storage auction "junk" for a welder.  But, most of the time it is guys that have a bunch of small junk they think they will trade you for your good big item.  Just this morning, I had some guy want to trade me a Winchester Canadian Centennial .30-30 for a reloading set up I had listed.........but he wanted 400 cash too!  I wouldn't have paid 400 for his rifle without my reloading stuff!

Stores / Re: How many "thrift stores" can a city support?
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:39:59 AM »
Keep in mind, once you open that store up, you need to continuously keep filling it with inventory.  Are you going to be able to buy enough lockers in the current environment to keep it full?  I know quite a number of folks that have gone that route, and good affordable lockers are selling for so much right now, it's hard to keep their shelves full of inventory.  Once you own a store, you HAVE to buy just to have something to sell.  I have seen thrift store owners battle over good lockers and spend so much money they expect to just break even, just so they have something to put out on the floor for sale!

Let's buy his locker, i am sure he had a storage somewhere, and now he can't pay for it.
I am sure you will find guns and money in it.

I'm betting an AK-47 and lot's of 7.62x39 ammo! ;D

He has a lot of great videos!  He has a lot of information and insight on running a business that apply to businesses other than just storage auctions.  Lot's of common sense ideas and straight talk.  He never says the storage auction business is easy....he stresses over and over that this will probably be the hardest work most of you have ever done.  He also touches on staying out of debt!  Well worth watching his youtube videos, and the price is right!  Never have bought any of his info though.

Actually that was the scam I was reading on. A couple of vets decided to cash in on the high bidding that was going on. Got a unit had empty boxes and boxes full of trash, nicely stacked, and written on the boxes was like collectibles, antiques, old baseball cards, stuff of that nature. However they got founded out by the guy who bought the unit. He was pist to get a unit for I think over a $1000, and be full of empty boxes and trash, lol

We've had that problem up in the Seattle area at a couple of different facilities.  It's lead to a couple of lawsuits and lot's of hard feelings.  Even if it's not technically "illegal", it is surely not ethical!

seems the dumbass was so caught up in there being a car in the unit, he wasn't listening to the announcements..

I know that wouldn't apply to any members of THIS forum, but yeah, there's a lot of them out there!   ;D

I just bought a unit with a truck in it the other day.  The storage place has been hanging onto this for 7 months before they finally sold it, and they have had it inspected and had all the paperwork ready for me.  Almost as easy as getting a title with it, and I will have very little wait (couple of weeks) before I can turn around and resell it.

I have a Droid X, but with my ipad, I hardly ever look anything up on the phone.  It's just when you have a 10" screen, why mess around with a little 4" screen?  I keep my auction schedules and auctioneer info on the desktop, and I can easily access my ebay and craigslist ads.  Makes everything simple, and it's still a lot easier than carrying a laptop.  If I didn't have the ipad, I would be doing all the same stuff on my phone.

As others have noted, you usually don't have enough time or are able to get close enough to get enough detailed information to actually be able to look up items during a sale.  I do look up stuff as I'm digging through the locker after I bought it though.

Been seeing a lot of those up in the Seattle area.  He acts like he's doing them a big "favor" because he will pay for it and let you keep your "personals", which you are going to get back anyway if you lose it.  I know a few guys that constantly flag those types of ads.
