Dang - that would of stunk to get all excited and then he shows up.  Course - I'm glad the manager was just going to sell you the unit anyways.  Most places in my area if there isn't 3 people they cancel it.  Best luck next time Cheesehead.

It's all going to depend on the fee really.  We all debated the merits of this in a long thread a few months back.  Myself - I don't really like the idea too much.  Even if I would be exempt at many places if they do the "bought a unit before" bit.  Too cumbersome and time-consuming for the company to keep track of who is who.  Time will tell.

Cut and polish them would make great gifts / sold.  Better then melting them IMO.

Hmm - don't want to be a grandparent for another 8-10 years (oldest is only 13).

Glad you are haven fun Movieman.  Colorado is a pretty cool state.  Got to visit parts of it when my sister lived out there in Durango.  Hope you find some nice picking at the flea.  I know a guy did at my table last weekend while I was getting breakfeast (my fault, but still feel he took advantage of my daughter.../sign).

I've noticed not so many newbie post for the most part.  Maybe you are correct that people are actually reading the threads.  Or better yet are no longer interested in storage auctions.  Only time will tell.

Today was a bust.  Couldn't make the first two auctions of a small caravan so figured would try the third.  They were 30 mins late getting it started for 1 unit.  Unit was a 10x10 with a black leather couch (missing leather on armrest), cloths on couch, particle board entertainment center with some VHS tapes and a few dvds.  Also was a particle board dresser I think and a few boxes.  What caught the eye of everyone I'm sure were the 3 swords in the corner behind the dresser.  You know those long Japan style swords that fantasy people love.  Unit went for $300 I think.  Crowd was small - only a dozen or so people.  Only 2 regulars and they said about 1/2 the crowd didn't show up here from the other 2 auctions.

That is it for the month of March.  Next auction isn't until April 6th.

Hope you get good at it Alias.  I have a whole bag of phones that need repair / work.  Have them in my "escrap" pile.  Did pull one to see if can sell it for parts.

Spent just under $100 for 320 world coins and 295 world notes.  Have been selling the coins at $.25 or more each.  Notes go for $2 each.  Even with doing some "bundles" with people I should be able to make some nice change.  Coins were $.07 each and notes $.21 to $.25 cost for each.

If have some cash on hand you can always do coin roll searching in dimes/quarters/halves for silver.  Those coins sell easy for spot or little more at the flea.  Pulled a bunch of wheat pennies that I put in my mix to sale.  No bites yet but who knows.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: u-haul?
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:01:53 PM »
Uhaul will be different depending who "owns" that store.  You can tell that just by reading the responses already.  Here is mine:

1) Always on 1st Friday of month.
2) Listed in paper 3 weeks or so out
3) Starts same location/time then moves downtown
4) Is same regional manager every month
5) They will NOT answer the phone.  You have to show up and hope they didn't cancel
6) Have 24 hours to clean unit out

Quality of units is mixed.  The first location can be ok.  Downtown is normally mid to low quality.  Most of the storage is "converted" warehouse and factory space.  Rats are a BIG problem.  So you have to look & smell the units over very carefully.  Have seen a few decent looking units here but they are rare.  Normal to have dozen units or more for sale.  Crowds have grown over the months (50+), but was down to around 20-30 last month.  Will see next month.

Nice Rockin - that sounds great.  I missed yesterday and today's auctions due to work.  Somehow they are starting to schedule meetings just before, during, or after an auction where I don't have time to attend.  Thursday is PS and the same thing.  So my next auction isn't unitl April 6.  Hope the crowds and prices will be the same here.  Would be nice to get some new inventory in.  Just paid the $45 for a military post spring flea.  It supports the families of troops so I didn't blink at the cost.  Would still love to make some money.

I had a co-worker that use to jailbreak his apple stuff.  Unlocking cell phones to be used on various networks I don't think is illegal.  If it was how could 80% of the phones on ebay be sold.  Jailbreaking I'm just not sure about.  I see people doing it all the time to stuff.  However, they run the risk of getting hit with major penalties by the carriers.

My co-worker had his phone and ipad jailbroke.  So that he could teether his ipad to his phone instead of paying another $30 a month for unlimited teethering data.  He finally got caught and they canceled or made some change to his service.

If your good with repairing stuff just look on craigs, ebay, etc. and buy some of the broken stuff, repair it, and then re-sell.  Is how we got one of our newest regulars.  He use to do yard sales picking up old electronics.  He saw all the cars in front of a storage place one day and ran up (in his PJs no less) and asked what was going on.  He has been buying units since Nov.  He works from home repairing electronics and sells them on ebay / flea.  Listening to him he is doing very well and is pretty reckless with his bids.  But I always take what people "brag" about with a grain of salt.

May want to give that a try.

Just re-looked at that unit.  Figure it is good practice.  I suspect everyone is driving the price up on that unit thinking it has lots of antiques.  It does have some age to it.  Plus, it looks like it was professionally wrapped.  You have shrink wrap around some of the furniture.  Plus the company moving boxes.  See an old style highchair in front, that shoe shine kit is old school.  American flag became real popular again after 9-11 so that isn't really a "tell" like they would before.  Golf clubs look old so not much value there.  The toolbox looks to be a harbor freight model.  Don't see "craftsmen" on the front like you normally would.  Or someone didn't put the sticker on.  The roll-up desk is a nice item.  Hopefully gas hasn't leaked onto it from the (I think) gas can on top of it.

I see about $800 - $1000 bid if was me.  Unit still would go for 800 - 1500 here.  The two units that I have seen so far this large and packed went for 1300, and 950.  A pretty large antique furniture unit went for 1500 (buddy got that one).

The patio furniture - 150-200
US flag - 10
Table + 4 chairs - 50
Empty totes w/ lid - $3 each
Golf clubs - ??  (sold 1 set for $50 so far)
Roll-up desk -- start at 200 - 250 and see if get bites
Tool chest - as genie said depends what it is.  -  $50 - $200

I'd love to go over that unit...just not at that price.

Sort of wish we had a site like this in GA.  That way I could save my gas money for some of these trash units.  That unit looks to be so/so.  At $1,500 it would sell in my area looking like that or maybe cheaper.  Some of the other units that had 2 days still on them were more reasonable in price.

Gratz mthewho2.  I don't know where your location is but you best keep it a secret.  In the last few months I hardly even see a unit go for $50 that is EMPTY.  Anything that is even 1/2 packed, and looks to have promise is 200+.

Good luck to ya.

That is sort of a good problem to have Alias.  I'm in-between you and Fayettenam.  I am running out of good stuff and have a bunch of "so-so" items to still sell.  I've already decided most if not all of the nick-nacks / cups / figurines are going to Goodwill.  Will keep some of the newer items I've not tried yet but just about everything on my one shelf is going.

I've been selling the crap out of world currency.  Only take a little at a time but sell each note for $2 each.  Sometimes will give a break of $1 each.  I decided last night to spend some of my paypal money and order some new notes.  Cost per note is $.25.  Those that I don't keep will be sold at that $2 mark.

I've also have bought some itmes / lots from other auction buyers.  Mostly it's computer electronics that they don't feel like messing with, don't know crap about, or just have too much stuff.  I've done so/so with this.  Last purchase was 5 boxes of stuff and 3 computers for $150.  If the computers work like he says and are P4s will break even if don't sell anything else.

That sounds great man.  I've not tried a yardsale yet.  Mostly keep hitting the flea.  Will have to try it one day.

That is great Miller - glad you got some units.  I like when my wife goes with me as she spots things I don't.  It's more "women" things but it always helps.  First two units I ever bought was due to her being with me and wanting the units.

gapajeff - ouch, there had to be something else in a unit for $600.  Or was the monitor in a box and looked brand new and people just wanted to pay retail.  Seen that a few times now.

I've come to really like units that are really crappy looking or has a ton of stuff and people don't want to do all that WORK.
