What's it Worth?? / Cabbage Patch Kids Anyone?
« on: March 11, 2011, 10:39:01 AM »
OK, the Beanie Babies aren't the only "rage" in town...let's hear it for Cabbage Patch Kids from 1983 !

The first pic is from San Francisco. Asking $50 on clist.

Number 2 is from Memphis, TN area. Asking $24 for 3 Kids on clist.

Number 3 is from Memphis, TN area. Asking $10 for 1 kid on clist.

Number 4 is from Chicago. Forget what the price was on clist.

*****
Like any other collectible, the "in the box" tend to bring better prices.
Now how about that NASCAR collectible trend ? Vroom, Vroom !

OK, one more and I think I'm done with my research on the Beanie phenomenon in general.

Picture below is from Chicago; person is asking $70 for 50 Beanies; nice wood floor !

webs.lanset.com/rjsmovie/images/chi60for70.jpg

Another in Chicago has "hundreds" for sale for $1500. This person had so many they were
uncountable I guess, but he/she will take $1500 no matter what !

There were 86 listings for Beanies in Chicago on this date (3 11 2011)  and many were from the same person who listed individual babies by name...that person was asking $3 each.

Here are a couple of more Beanie options. If you do a clist search in Memphis, some 16 opportunities will come up. Here are two that are east of Memphis .

webs.lanset.com/rjsmovie/images/cordova300for300.jpg

The one directly above is 300 beanies for $300.

The one above here is for 34 beanies (some in cases) for $600.

You have to know your beanies !

I'm sure it's great if you spend the time studying it, but the reviews I've read of penny auctions convince me it's not for me.

It seems a penny really isn't  really a penny if I read it correctly; the tv ads for one of the penny auctions tout the $35K car that you can get for $635.00 or the plasma tv that retails for $2,500 that goes for $6.72.

The thoughts "If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is" and "A fool and his money are soon parted" come to mind, but to each his own.  It's just not for me.

After a beanie baby discussion in the Post your Pics thread, I found this offering in a central California Craigslist offering.

webs.lanset.com/rjsmovie/images/bennie.jpg

Maybe the seller of the above batch is having trouble selling because he called them "bennie" babies.

Then I found another where the seller was trying to line up 800 babies on his/her couch for a pic; I think that person wanted $1K for the babies.

Mr. A told me that the ones he is able to sell for big bucks are the rare ones, with the plastic heart intact and in the plexiglass case. I don't think either of the two examples above  meet those requirements. I took a batch of 2 dozen to the flea market last weekend; all clean, with heart tags, no plastic containers; sold 2 for $2 (total) and took other 22 to Goodwill.

This is a rare one; seller is asking $999.99 as starting bid:

Here's a new way to be a lookey loo...or maybe a bidder. Check this "newbie" website out...a new way to bid ?

Take a look at this link. I saw this ad here on the forums.

Looks like it is in its infancy, but will be interesting to see what develops.

Went to one today with 6  lkrs and only 20 people...not a miracle, just not well known spot. A year ago 6 bidders was common. Of the 20 only 2 of us would normally have been high bidders, but not today.

The newbies were feeling their oats. One fellow who has been overpaying for two weeks now continues on his quest to spend his money and try to break even.

This auctioneer is totally weird too. He always starts the lockers at $100 if they are trash and at $400 if they look like a $50 locker. I bid $10 for the first locker. Auctioneer said who'll give me $100?  Newbie above offered $50 and he got it.  He continued to do that throughout the 1 hour it took and he got 3 total I think.

Another newbie paid $300 for 20 banker's boxes clearly labeled with document years, etc.

Anyway, a bust on what used to be a good facility.

What's it Worth?? / Re: 1921-1923 Buescher Saxophone
« on: March 10, 2011, 09:48:23 AM »
I posted the sax on Ebay for kicks  with a buy it now for $100... it sold within an hour.. geesh... guess someone didnt think it was worthless.....lol.

Yep, any sax, trumpet, clarinet I have gotten goes right on to eBay. I've never had one that hasn't sold in the first listing.  People who buy these at the flea market are taking them right to eBay if they have gotten them at a good price at the flea.

Take it to the flea....hundreds of people might see it, but how many want a sax?  Put it on ebay, anyone who sees it is acutally looking for a sax.

I did win 7 bucks doing side bets on how much the lockers would sell for, and I did get a little irritated and bid a guy up (to be fair, don't know if the guy was a noobie or not, didn't care) on a 200 locker all the way up to 725!  Hope he enjoys his new found treasure!

Interesting to see the betting on lkr sales amounts goes on in your area!  Probably the same all over just like
the crowds and the prices !

Partial quote from above:

Given all this, my takeaway from your ealier post still applies.  It behooves us to stick around at the end because a locker that interests us just might once again become available.

Yes, sticking around DOES seem like a good idea as I have seen the person not have money a few times.
And if I DID stick around, I PROBABLY would go ahead and buy it.

On the other hand, I have bid what I thought was a good price for a lkr only to have someone go up another 50 or so, and I bail. People have said, "what's an extra 50?" but of course the next bid I would place would be 50 or so higher than THAT, now I'm at $100 more than I wanted to bid. I bail; and I MIGHT bail on the deal we've been talking about IF I had second thoughts...and I've had those in just a regular bidding situation, so hard to tell exactly what any of us would do "in the moment".

Well Mr. A I think if you re-read the posts in question you'll see I didn't call you a liar....perhaps sbell did in an off-handed way, but I'm not sure.

Sorry you take such umbrage at my thoughts on Beanie Babies. Sure there are some worth money and sure if you have a good contact for a buyer of them you're good to go, but BY IN LARGE I stand by my assertion that they aren't a biggie in the overall picture. How about Cabbage Patch Kids?

Of course any item is worth what someone will pay for it, and you're right, having that person or persons available is great.

As to envy, well, I have to tell you I am not envious of you. It's "A life style" you know and I'm as happy with mine as you are with yours....mirror not withstanding.

Best of selling to you.

TonyT....

The lookers who bug me are what I call the "bicycle boys". These guys are usually down on their luck...or always have been...and like the 100 pound guy, they would have a hard time hauling away a 5 drawer file cabinet full or empty.
Yes, they could get someone's help too, but they are taking up space and I have NEVER seen one bid let alone win a locker.

Now as to the old guy. I have a little more sympathy for people age 70 and up...especially UP. These folks are also just looking for something to do and they suck air and time from us, but they are sometimes hard of hearing too and I've found a tap on the shoulder helps them to focus on what's happening behind them.

One older couple...mid-70s bought a couple of lockers the other day and I heard they had them on pallets out in the south 40 covered with tarps. They no more need to be in this biz than the man in the moon (IMHO).

I thought about that, but at the end of the day, we bid what we are willing to pay for lockers that we want (with the exception of a few of us who claim to bid more than they believe lockers are worth).  Therefore, I would generally still want to buy that locker, assuming I didn't exhaust cash on hand with later purchases.  The odds that the locker was a loser didn't change since I made my earlier bid, after all.

I am a person who will bid people up and I admit it and have no trouble with the concept. People do it to me too.
While it's true that I GENERALLY still want a locker I bid on (at a certain amount) I sometimes regret having made a last bid that landed me the locker...we all make mistakes sbell. But the point HERE is that I was fortunate that I had left and didn't get the locker. I was happy to find that out AFTER the fact.

Let us know however if you NEVER get a locker  that stings you when you DO pay that last bid amount you were confident in. If you never get stung you ARE a rare buyer indeed.

Going to a sale today with just 4 lkrs and in a bad part of town, but I did get one good one here before that had the leftovers of the former lkr owner's GOVERNMENT surplus items. He had bought a gov auction, stored a lot of bulk office type stuff there (not furniture) and didn't pay his bill. So far that lkr has brought in 3x and I still have stuff left.

Will modify this post in about 3 hours with the crowd results for today, March 9, 2011.

Edit:

The auction I went to with 4 lkrs had only about 20 people with 13 of them being newbies. The other 7 were regulars all hoping to make even a minor score at this low-end facility.

One newbie (A) liked the look of a locker I would have paid $50 for at the most. He got into it a bit with another newbie (B) and it escalated from $40 to $100 with newbie (A) at $100. (B) went to $125 and (A) made his PLAY and “WON” the locker at $200. You go guy!
