Went on a trip 50 miles the other day and had my original ideas confirmed about doing so.
The lockers are the same; the buyers are out in droves (newbies); the prices are too high.

Of course it's next-day quarter-backing to say "I shouldn't have gone.", but I shouldn't have gone.
And I won't again. There are 20 or so auctions a month within 15 miles of me. That's enough biz for me.

Sure, that ONE SUPER DELUXE locker will get bought by someone else sometime, but you can't get them all anyway, so why not save time and gas.

eBay / What items have you had -thrown off- eBay....if any?
« on: March 04, 2011, 09:36:40 AM »
It's happened to me a couple of times but the only one I remember is this one:

A protective (gas) mask....used US military with bag.

I see plenty of Israeli gas masks on there, but maybe because they're new.

The brief explanation was a gov regulation .... it wasn't strictly eBay doing it.

Anyone else have items thrown off eBay?  Not incidentally, this isn't an eBay bash and those who want to bash eBay can start their own thread on that topic.

THIS topic will help other eBay users to AVOID or sidestep (perhaps) trouble listing an item.

Movieman your random post has nothing to do with this thread

Well, you're half right. I think your selling china on ebay was in one of your other posts.

But when you say eBay sucks, I think my suggestion that you stop selling on eBay makes sense.
As far as my comment about your proposed website sale and auction listing sales goes, I think that also
relates to your comment about eBay "sucks". If it "sucks" why use it at all ?

But I could be wrong...I have been before.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Wars!
« on: March 03, 2011, 06:17:46 PM »
WOW....I can hardly wait to see what kind of response you will get from the "old-timers" and "regulars" you will get to your post!

Unless, someone "sells out" the vast majority (in my opinion) will tell you where to go and probably mention that place where the sun don't shine. But what do I know. I made good money for 7 years doing this, but since the two shows came along not only the money but the fun has gone out of it.

Those of us who keep plugging away at it are still doing OK, but just not AS OK as before. Maybe that's only fair, but what the heck....guess reality tv is here to stay and all the reality channels as well. Wait, did I say "reality".

Here's a suggestion for your show that I hope you will take. Show the guys taking the stuff to the dump. A second suggestion is to be more open about the hard work and 1 in 10, 20 or 100 it takes to find a winner in the locker biz.

Now let the responses begin.

Auctions today in my town and 2 other towns. I bet all the regulars would either stay local for go to town A about 50 miles away. Instead all the regulars went to town B which is where I ended up.

12 lockers there and all went for 2x the worth. One of my local regulars got one for $500 because he had driven his big box truck and didn't want to go home empty..."hauling post holes" as the old truckers used to say.

He'll break even.  A fellow from another community (and a regular) bought one for $1,000 plus. He'll break even.

**************

Came back to my town and went to a late afternoon auction. 12 lockers here too. All sold for 2x the worth including one for $1250 with old Marshall speaker and amps. Guy said he could get $3K for them. Maybe on Mars where they are rare.

**************

Welcome to the newbies who it appears will be hanging around until the fall since both tv shows have renewed.

eBay / Re: Nice little article on eBay.

Partial quote from above.

Ebay sucks now. I hate how buyers can take 3 weeks to pay you and you cant leave them feedback. I hate how buyers try to renogotiate prices and or shipping after an auction has ended. I hate paypal. And I hate many of ebays flawed policies.

I find that when selling china on eBay the gravy bowls, serving pieces do well. Plates, not so much.
I sold silverware place settings though (nothing terribly special) and did quite well just depends on who is on at the time.

My recommendation to you is that you stop using eBay. But then where will you sell the rights to your website?
And what about those $1 and $6 lists of auctions you sell?

Not going to an auction until Thursday the 3rd, but am taking the standard advice and leaving two local auctions with maybe a total of 15 or so units for an auction 40 miles away that is showing 13 right now and probably half that by auction day.

Hedging my bets even further by taking the significant other and two dogs on a hike nearby. At least something will go right...IF the weather co-operates.

Will report back on this at end of day Thursday.

Terry...

I can't help you convince your wife, but I can tell you this. In my city the price of regular at an ARCO (formerly BP) station is $3.69 a gallon.

There are of course good lockers everywhere it's just a matter of buying 100 or more a year and you will hit some good ones !  I buy about 50 a year because that's all I need and all the work I want to do.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Flip or hold?

I'll sell big stuff cheap...preferably right at the lkr auction to anyone who will haul away a mattress, chest, sofa, etc.  Not moving that stuff is worth a LOT to me. Now if it's just an EXCELLENT big piece I will spend some time and effort on it.

I sell at a flea and on ebay/clist and the smalls work for me in all those places.

I buy single purchases of certain tools at flea, estate sales etc and I will hold on to those for the max dollar.
The kind of tools I buy are older and specialized and I often get them in the $25 range and sell them in the $200 range.

The three guys above said it all for me !

Some folks have trashed eBay, but it can't be beat for its huge audience and I only sell to the U.S.A.

The time to call the respective storage locations is the day before or the day OF the auction you have already learned about. This is to confirm that the auction is still ON. No point in going if it's been called off due to lkr owners FINALLY paying their bill.

Even if the auctioneers run websites with dates and details, they are only human and sometimes a cancelled sale doesn't show in the list  (as cancelled) the day of the sale.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Lookey Loos Part 3....March, 2011

Post here regarding crowds, outrageous newbie behavior, etc when the "Ides of March" come around.
Spring weather and income tax refunds should bring them out in droves !

3839
1) read the legal notices..if you have "hundreds" of storage places some of them will be having auctions this month.

2) Go to an auction. Ask the auctioneer if he/she has a printed or online schedule of upcoming auctions.

3) Go to an auction conducted by a different auctioneer. Ask same question in point 2 above.

4) Repeat step 3.

5) Before you know it you will be making millions.

You're welcome.

I am pretty sure at least one of the shows was picked up for a second season, so waiting until March probably wont help a damn thing.

Orlando

Both shows have renewed for sure. I actually think central California is starting to see a bit of backing off in crowd size. Also, some newbies ARE buying...though still paying too much. I have heard 2 guys say they got crap and will lose money on what they paid for...one paid 500 and another 1650!
